the decision to go to war in Iraq was

evidence' that the tyrant had defied
United Nations Resolutions against him.

Straw yesterday defended the Government
and said he 'did not accept' claims that
the military action was ILLEGAL. the
former FOREIGN SECRETARY added:
'Lord Goldsmith's advice that military
action was LAWFUL and in accordance with
the Security Council resolutions was
shared by many member states.'
However , the Liberal Democrats said the
'damning' comments meant a FULL PUBLIC

NICOLAS Sarkozy
risked getting off to a bad start with Barrack Obama
yesterday by siding with Russia over Washington's
missile defence system.
The French leader
,also current EU president, added to tensions
between the two powers over the plans.
Russia believes
U.S. plans to put a missile defence system in Poland
and the Czech Republic to protect the U.S. against
missile strikes from rogue states such as Iran poses
a THREAT TO SECURITY.
Last night Moscow
announced plans to deploy tactical weapons in the
Baltic enclave of
KALININGRAD, boarding
POLAND, in
response.
At a summit in NICE
the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev yesterday, Mr
Sarkozy said:
'Deployment of a
missile defence system would bring nothing to
SECURITY in EUROPE.
It would
complicate things and make them move backward.'
He proposed a
freeze on missile development until after a
conference he wants to hold next year on
EUROPEAN SECURITY,
to which he would invite the RUSSIANS. BUT U.S.
DEFENCE SECRETARY Robert Gates yesterday condemned
the Russian threat to place missile on the Polish
border as
'provocative
and misguided'.
He added:
This is hardly the welcome, a new
American administration deserves.'

competitive sector of the economy stare down the
barrel of REDUNDANCY, the feather-bedded inhabitants
of BROWN'S bloated client STATE are insulated from

We shall be
showered by their generosity of

present occupation and devote

Political Parties under the new
arrangement will no longer be
able to muscle MPs against their
CONSCIENCE to betray their
CONSTITUENTS and COUNTRY.
No MP should look
on his job as a permanent jolly
which in many cases includes
their relatives who are making a
killing on the hard pressed
TAXPAYER.
BUT WILL IT
HAPPEN?- NO!
because those in
power at the present time have
no interest in losing their jobs
and having to find a real job
for a change.
We have
persistently asked for the
Eurosceptics to work together
under an umbrella organisation-
ONE LABEL- a simple but clear
message such as OUT-OF-EUROPE or
whatever, and led preferably by
a military man of stature and
grit to
GET THE JOB DONE.
The EU Commission
is on a good-tidings exercise at

nations, Europe's leaders

gathered last week in BRUSSELS
and set down the PRINCIPLES they
intend to have PRESIDENT BUSH
sign on to. And GET THIS -THEY
GAVE AMERICA a 100-DAY DEADLINE
to AGREE WITH THEIR PLANS.

defending a COMMON POSITION, a
vision...for reforming our
financial system."
[Whatever many may think of BUSH
this idea that America which
join with such a closed
undemocratic non-enterprise
shop is fanciful at the least

My guess is that the American
hosts are as intimidated by this
show of UNITY as the WEST'S
ENEMIES were by the announcement

EUROPEAN ARMY.

want the International Monetary
Fund (IMF) to become a GLOBAL
SUPERVISOR of REGULATORS;
"the pivot of a renewed
international system"
is the blurry phrases used so as
to minimise OFFENCE to the
AMERICANS...
The new global order, those who
have studied history contend, is
to be modelled on Bretton Woods
agreement of 1944. Never mind
that the arrangements agreed
depended heavily on some control
of the international flow of
capital, not feasible in today's
globalised economy. Or that, as
John Maynard Keyes, the
architect of Bretton Woods, told
the House of Lords,
" we intend to retain control of
our domestic rate of interest"-
something that members of the
euro -zone have already
forfeited and would like other
nations, including Britain, to
surrender in the interests of
INTERNATIONAL CO-ORDINATION.
This is not to say that the
meeting this weekend will be a
complete waste of time. there is
the intangible benefit of the
creation of PERSONAL
RELATIONSHIPS that might
contribute to FUTURE
CO-OPERATION....
But in the end, this talking
shop will reach no meaningful
and binding decisions. The Bush
Administration wants nothing to
do with
SUPRANATIONAL REGULATORY
AUTHORITIES
Nor does the incoming Obama team
have any intention of signing on
to such a programme, either
before it takes office or during
the 100-day deadline THAT THE EU
HAS SET...But neither he nor in
any likelihood, his successor
will want to replace the current
quite flexible but more
effective system of informal
international co-ordination with
a MORE RIGID ARCHITECTURE.
And my guess is that John
Maynard Keynes, surprised at the
fact that there is a place from
which he can look down on the
proceedings, would
ENDORSE THE SCEPTICISM OF THE
AMERICAN SIDE.
He least of all would want to
see the WORLD'S LEADERS bound by
some academic scribbler of a few
years back, even if he would be
THE SCRIBBLER.

ONE OF the BASIC RULES of POLITICS
is THAT when ALL MAJOR politicians
AGREE on ANY ISSUE, THEY ARE -
ALMOST ALWAYS - BY DEFINITION
WRONG.
THEY WERE ALL WRONG when they
supported APPEASEMENT in the
THIRTIES, backed BRITISH ENTRY into
the EXCHANGE RATE MECHANISM in 1990,
or when the TORIES and LABOUR joined
the DISASTROUS IRAQ WAR.
[There is one other MAJOR and
MOMENTOUS EVENT which has not been
mentioned which concerns the sale of
our CONSTITUTION and COUNTRY to a
FOREIGN POWER with GROSS LIES and
DECEIT and TREACHERY of the TREATY
of ROME in 1972 and the massive ALL
PARTY support for remaining in the
EEC which in reality was the EU in
the REFERENDUM in 1975 in which the
GOVERNMENT spent millions of the
TAXPAYER'S money for the 'YES' vote
while funds for the' NO' VOTE were
minimal. We have advocated that the
present EMERGENCY should be dealt
with by a NATIONAL GOVERNMENT which
would have a better chance of
SUCCESS than the present PARTY
POLITICS which is NOT IN THE
COUNTRY'S INTEREST.]
And this week they are at it again
as Nick Clegg, David Cameron and
Gordon brown launch themselves into
a unseemly contest about who can be
the BIGGEST TAX-CUTTER....
Meanwhile Gordon Brown used his
Downing Street press conference to
pledge a significant tax cut in the
AUTUMN BUDGET STATEMENT due to be
made next week.
These tax-cutting plans raise one
giant question - where on earth is
the extra money TO COME FROM?...
In other words, Labour's planned tax
give-away will not be funded by a
reduction in spending. it will be
paid for by EVEN MORE GOVERNMENT
DEBT. GORDON BROWN is PLANNING TO
BORROW and SPEND his way OUT OF THIS
TERRIBLE RECESSION. What is so sad
about this strategy is that it shows
that the Prime Minister is clearly
still in complete DENIAL about THE
TRUE NATURE of the ECONOMIC PROBLEM
that faces BRITAIN today - as set
out by the INTERNATIONAL MONETARY
FUND and other highly respectable
organisations.
THE PROBLEM IS that BRITAIN has
BORROWED FAR TOO MUCH MONEY. This is
what makes it so incredible that
GORDON BROWN and ALISTAIR DARLING
WANT TO BORROW MORE. They are BOTH
like a DRUNKEN MAN who, in
attempting to SOBER UP, pours
himself yet another LARGE SCOTCH and
THEN ANOTHER...
And yet again it will become the
laughing stock of the world. We will
be unable to pay our debts, and
eventually be forced to go cap in
hand to the International Monetary
Fund or rich benefactors like Saudi
Arabia to be bailed out.
Alternatively, we can make sure we
pay our way.
THAT MEANS SPENDING CUTS ON THE
VAST, BLOATED, PUBLIC SECTOR
But there is no alternative. It's
worth remembering the
WISE WORDS OF JIM CALLAGHAN IN 1976
the last time Britain faced a
comparable
ECONOMIC DISASTER.
'We used to think that you could
spend your way out of a recession
and increase employment by
CUTTING TAXES and BOOSTING
GOVERNMENT SPENDING.'
he said
'I tell you in all candour that
that
OPTION NO LONGER EXISTS and in so
far as it ever did exist, it only
worked on each occasion since the
war by injecting a bigger dose of
INFLATION into the ECONOMY, followed
by a HIGHER LEVEL of UNEMPLOYMENT as
the NEXT STEP.'
CUTTING BACK ON SPENDING MEANS
SACRIFICE-NATIONAL and PERSONAL, BUT
it would FIT the MOOD of NATIONAL
AUSTERITY.
It
would mean that we do not selfishly
inflict a terrible burden of DEBT on
GENERATIONS who have NOT BEEN BORN -
For the TRUTH is such is the LEVEL
OF DEBT Britain is ACCUMULATING that
the HANG-OVER could last for DECADES
TO COME.
