THE FAMILIES of six British military policeman killed by an Iraqi mob yesterday demanded that officers be prosecuted.

 

They insisted that negligent commanders be put on trial following an Inquest into the Red Caps’ deaths.

 

‘We want them back in the dock’

said John Miller, whose son Simon died in the attack.

 

‘The Iraqis pulled the trigger but somebody else loaded the gun’

 

Oxfordshire coroner Nicholas Gardiner concluding that the men had been unlawfully killed, said he would write to the Defence Secretary John Reid questioning WHY the men left their base without a satellite telephone.

Their bullet-riddled bodies were found shortly after the war ended in June 2003 at a remote police station in Al Majar al Kabir.

 

Paratroopers were in the southern Iraqi town but the military policemen were unable to contact them.

 

The coroner stressed that, even if they had been able to, it was not certain they could have been rescued.

 

[Well this comment was not called for because it would not help the Inquiry and certainly would not have eased the pain of the relatives. He should have kept his comments to FACT.]

 

But the Red Caps ‘families’ solicitor is writing to Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair demanding a full Criminal Inquiry to determine whether neglect of duty and manslaughter charges be brought.

 

Reg Keys, whose son Tom was killed in the attack, said:

 

‘On the day these men were killed, in the storeroom there was a surplus of that type of phone,’ he said.

 

John Miller added:

 

‘this will never bring our sons back, but we want to make sure that no other soldier falls foul of this.’

Were killed after being sent into what the families say was a ‘DEATH TRAP’

 

Relatives heard harrowing evidence of how the men died after being cornered by a mob of 500.

 

The military policemen had been training Iraqi police and re-equipping police stations. The mob had been hunting Coalition forces and after being repelled by paratroopers earlier in the day, it came upon the six Red caps in the ruined police station.

 

Coroner Mr Gardiner said it was apparent the Red caps had no idea they were about to be set upon, and no idea the skirmishes had broken out earlier nearby.

 

One was shot 18 times as he curled up in an attempt to defend himself, while another was beaten with a rifle butt before being shot.

 

Coroner Mr Gardiner said he was writing to the Defence Secretary with a series of recommendations about equipment and procedures following the deaths ‘to prevent the recurrence of fatalities’.

 

He said it was clear Colonel Thomas Becket, commanding officer of Maysan Province, had ordered that all patrols were to be equipped with satellite telephones.

‘clearly the person commanding some 1500 troops cannot personally ensure his orders are obeyed -such an order would be passed down chain of command- but I think that at some point there is a need for one of the links to be proactive rather than reactive, and ensure there has been compliance.

 

‘It is not for me to identify the particular link, but it is a matter I shall cover in the letter.’

 

 

 

The Inquest heard that Lieutenant Richard Phillips, the officer in charge of the Red Caps, had NOT KNOWN that the men were meant to carry satellite phones.

 

He had been left in charge by his commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Byrn Parry-Jones, who was back in Britain.

The coroner said more attention should have been paid by Colonel Becket to simmering tension in the area -in the days before the Red Caps died a Quick Response Force had twice had to help the Paras fight their way out of trouble.

 

But he said, even if the Paras unit nearby had come to the Red Caps assistance’ given the numbers and armament of the mob’ it was quite possible’ I would be holding an Inquest into the death of not six brave men, but 18.’

 

[Well here again we are told the possibilities of casualties - it might be true that they would all lose their lives but what is more important than to rescue a even smaller beleaguered force rather than see them treated as they had been without an attempt to save their lives. There is also the question of air-cover could this not have been quickly available? Possibly a fuller Inquiry will reveal if that was possible.]

 

[The Coroner] ‘It is clear to me that in Al Majar al Kabir that morning there was a faction determined to cause trouble, Mr Gardiner added.

 

Army spokesman Colonel Peter Davies said all the implications of the inquest’s findings would be considered as ‘a matter of the utmost importance’.

 

Responsibility for bringing to justice those involved in the murders rested with the Iraqi authorities.’ We are doing all that we can to support that investigation,’ he added.

[The truth is that it is the Iraqis who now run much of Iraq and they are most unlikely to cooperate on such a matter. What is needed is a more vigorous effort by the Army to punish the officers who appear to have acted as if they were on a home training exercise instead of being responsible for men on the front line of a war zone]

 

Almost 6,700 Britons

 

have needed hospital treatment in Iraq since the invasion three years ago the Ministry of Defence admitted.

 

About 4,000 had to be shipped home.

 

The figures were slipped out on the MoD’s website as MPs broke for the Easter recess.

 

It has been claimed that Ministers were trying to keep the statistics secret.

 

With the Iraq war already costing the taxpayer

 

£3 Billion

 

and rising every day with the inevitable cost of the care which many of the soldiers will need for the rest of their lives it is time for the perpetrators and supporters of the ILLEGAL war to be dismissed from OFFICE at the earliest opportunity.
