DO YOU remember the 1980 Olympic Games? Probably not. But they were a major political event because the U.S. called for a boycott of the Great Moscow event - which 59 other countries followed, but not us, I am glad to say.

 

The protest arose because the Soviet Union had - Oh, the horror of it! - sent troops into Afghanistan. Such wickedness could not be forgiven.

 

The Russians offered the excuse that their intervention had been asked for by the Afghan president (that rings a bell somewhere?). But of course, such feeble justification was not going to be accepted by the U.S. and its best friends. Vietnam, did I hear you say? Oh well, that was different.

 

In the event, the Soviet Afghanistan intervention was such a failure and so unpopular among Russians that it made a major contribution to the collapse of Communism.

In the pot-and-kettle context, I was looking recently at some of the exchanges during the Big Three meetings in 1945 to plan a brave new world. The U.S. and Britain were insisting that there should be proper elections in Eastern Europe. An interesting view said Molotov, and the Soviet Foreign Minister asked what were we planning to do about Franco’s Spain.

 

But Spain was a major British trading partner, was Churchill’s rather weak retort. Whether Molotov produced one of his icy smiles at that point is not recorded.

 

British and American protests about Soviet behaviour in Eastern Europe were also met by Molotov’s comments about human rights being violated in Greece - where Britain was aiding the Greek Right and against the Greek Left.

 

Our side insisted that such a claim was a complete distortion of the truth. Were could he have got such information from? The British Press, responded Molotov.

 

But we must not stray too far from Afghanistan, which is where disaster now lies. A British military contingent about the size of the police force of Wales is expected to control an area of similar size. To do so when hostility comes only from local warlords would be difficult enough.

 

With the expectation that the region will draw in Muslim fanatics from other countries, it is hopeless. The country is made for guerrilla warfare with its mountains, caves, ravines and primitive roads.

 

As the casualties start to mount -as they will

the public, already disillusioned about IRAQ, will want us to disengage. As we must. For we may face the slow death of the BRITISH ARMY

-one of the few institutions these days, which commands national and international admiration.

Iraq has been a brutal wound. Afghanistan could be mortal. Recruitment figures are liable to collapse.

 

But do not look to the Official Opposition for help. Already discredited by support for the Iraq war, the Tory Front Bench offers supine support for the

GOVERNMENT.

 

Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague, normally a sensible man, prates about our ‘building’ a country alongside the Americans.

Shadow Defence Secretary Liam Fox talks of the ‘construction of a free and democratic Afghanistan’. [Well in England in particular many people would be appreciative if that was true in their country] But the first instinct of the Afghans must be that they should not be ruled or controlled by foreigners. [Well as the Press and Media have aired recently we have the same problem in England].

 

Fox adds sonorously that:

 

‘We cannot fail to act and we cannot act and fail’ (I am working on that.)

 

One wonders if the politicians have the slightest understanding of that country, its people or its tribal rivalries. Even the writ of the elected president does not run far outside Kabul and not much there.

 

A riot in the city a week ago, after an accident involving an American vehicle, left eight dead and 100 injured. It could be more than that, agitators proclaim to a population all too ready to believe the worst.

 

The Tories believe it is their duty at all times to stand by our armed forces whatever the conflict. This is ludicrously short-sighted.

 

If they want to support the Army, they should resist it being given impossible tasks.

Face ‘human shields’

British soldiers taking part in the biggest coalition offensive in Afghanistan told yesterday how the Taliban fighters had used women and children as ‘human shields.

 

[NOW! Mr Blair you know what our troops will have to contend with and no doubt a number of lawyers in the UK will be hoping our lads will be on the road to the Old Bailey.]

 

Paratroopers revealed how they had to give pursuit of insurgents after coming under fire. Corporal Quinton Poll, a 29-year-old section commander with A Company of 3 Para, said:

 

‘I followed the gunman into a house and he started pushing women and children towards me.’

 

‘We know who we’re dealing with. But when you find out they are using human shields, you are just surprised.’

 

The troops came under fire as they arrived by helicopter in the remote mountain town of Nowzad as part of the U.S led Operation Mountain thrust, the biggest drive against militants since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

 

The 11,000-strong coalition force of American, British, Canadian and Afghan troops have killed nearly 100 Taliban in recent days. But yesterday Taliban units retaliated, killing more than 30 civilians and abducting a dozen more. The firefight, which took place earlier this month, was part of the first major battle British troops faced since moving to southern Afghanistan this year.

 

Details of the fight are only now becoming public after troops involved met reporters at a British base in Helmand province.

 

Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Tootal, the British battle group commander, sad his troops were ambushed by more than 50 Taliban operating in small groups. More than 20 Taliban were killed, while British forces sustained only minor injuries [?]

 

He said the outcome of battles such as the clash at Nowzad could determine the success of a new Nato force now taking over security for southern Afghanistan.

 

‘I’d like to think it sent a message to the Taliban that they might want to think twice about attacking us again,’ he said.

 

 

But the commander insisted that winning hearts and minds was paramount.

 

He said:

 

‘If every day we could go out and improve the lot of the Afghan people, that would have a far greater effect than killing Taliban’

[Well he would have to say that for morale but the fact is they were taken in an ambush, which the terrain easily facilitates, and it will happen on a regular basis because the Taliban are the defenders of their own territory and the Afghan people are no different to any other people in wanting the invader to leave THEIR COUNTRY.

 

The only result that will be accomplished will be a regular flight of body bags to the UK and the injured - many for life - and the distress of their families and friends.]

Canadian and Dutch troops will be taking over neighbouring provinces, which are under U.S.command until NATO takes over next month. The Nowzad battle gives a sense of the unpredictable threat the NATO troops will face in what the alliance says is a tough mission

 

The past few weeks have seen British forces move into areas in the high mountains of Helmand province that have seen no outside military presence for decades.

 

It is a wild country where the Taliban, who governed until the U.S.-led strikes in 2001, have been making a violent comeback against a new governor and the Western-backed government in Kabul.
