SCOTLAND -ITS PARLIAMENT -WALES-ITS ASSEMBLY-ENGLAND-STILL AWAITS ITS PARLIAMENT-WHY?

Much has been written over the last 50 years as to the benefits or otherwise of

DEVOLUTION

SCOTLAND and WALES

BUT LITTLE ABOUT AN

ENGLISH PARLIAMENT

[We do however acknowledge the major contribution to the subject over the past decades of the erudite work of the writer and columnist Simon Heffer whose work is the present nucleus of our England Matters! bulletin board.]

We have over the years heard much about the impossibility of

DEVOLUTION

-for Scotland and Wales and for that matter

ENGLAND.

Today in July 2007 we can see an established Scottish SNP led

Scottish Parliament

AND

A Welsh Assembly

with a Nationalist/Labour administration

BUT WHAT ABOUT

ENGLAND?

It appears all governments have done little to bring about an

ENGLISH PARLIAMENT

They have said over the years it is because it is not wanted by the

English People

This was until recently an acknowledged fact and when one looks into the English mind one has on the whole the reason for it. But the advent of

DEVOLUTION

AND

NATIONHOOD

-has roused the English people -and an awakening has reached the usually taciturn

ENGLISH

The EDP came into existence over 12 years ago to champion the

INDEPENDENCE

ENGLAND

IN A FAMILY OF NATION STATES

OF A

GREATER BRITAIN.

Since that time as we all know England has been ignored as to its unique identity and historical place as the innovator of parliamentary democracy now a basic framework for the majority of nation states in the world today.

Over the years many erudite commentators in the political and industrial field have expressed their opinions as to the viability or otherwise of such a quasifederal arrangement.

With the passing of time many of those opinions as to the practicality of the devolution question have been finally accepted and are now in place.

BUT WHAT ABOUT

ENGLAND?

Well you might well ask why the English people and in this description we include all loyal subjects that reside in the land of that name -which until recently has been a word forbidden for over four decades though the first glimmerings of this travesty of justice showed itself in the late 1930s by the Scottish newspaper proprietors erasing the word

ENGLAND

-and replacing it with

BRITAIN.

As a people we have been slow quite naturally to react to the persistent talk of Britishness when to all intents and purposes such a term -now a much acclaimed phrase of our

SCOTTISH

PRIME MINISTER

ENGLAND

-because as we all know the matters concerning Scotland and Wales in the main are matters for their

FIRST MINISTERS.

It has been said that a federal system similar to the Federal German would not be possible because of the differences of size and population of the nation states concerned.

WE DISAGREE

-with this assumption as for the last three decades many matters once held to be unworkable have been proved to be spurious.

In order for the quasifederal arrangement to succeed in

BRITAIN

[Yes! we do use the word when it is in context]

-as a whole it is imperative that the quasifederal links are few to ensure that as has been much quoted in the past

AND

'Devolution should not be just about

POLITICS and POWER

It is about the

Spirit and Goals

of our

National Life'

PRIME MINISTER

HOW WILL WE ACHIEVE OUR AIM?

Well we can learn from the past and in particular from the SNP who from their early days have directed their appeal to the

WOMEN and YOUTH

SCOTLAND

This is not to say that other members of the family should not equally take part in the drive for

NATIONHOOD.

LET US FACE THE ACTUAL REALITY

SO WHY CAN'T

ENGLAND

BE FOR

ENGLAND

When all nation states in our shared island home are independent nation states with a loose quasifederal links then and only then can we
