WHO’S really AFFRONTED our NATIONAL INTEGRITY? An HONEST soldier or a LYING BLAIR?

LAST WEEK Sir Richard Dannatt head of the Army, suggested that we should leave Iraq’ some time soon’ and all hell broke loose.

This week Brigadier Ed butler, commander of 3 Para battle group just returned from Afghanistan has made a rather more damning critique of government policy.

According to the brigadier, the invasion of Iraq prevented British troops from helping secure Afghanistan much sooner, resulting in a dangerous vacuum in the country for four years  which they are now being asked to fill.  In other words, the Government has made things more difficult than they needed to be for our hard-pressed soldiers in Afghanistan.

[In fact when one looks at almost any aspect of New Labour policy over the past nine years one is left with the realisation that if they had in the main left much undone there would not have been the almost monthly reversal of policy which has made matters more critical and dangerous whether it is in matters of Law and Order –

Drugs –Sex Education for children – Gambling or whatever their crackpot ideas they come up with.  What was needed was CERTAINTY

That the criminal would be locked up and if there was any rehabilitation to be considered it would be within a secure prison. 

There were enough laws on the statute book prior to the arrival of the crazy squad what was needed was the courts and the prisons to do their job.]

[What Brigadier Butler confirmed] This is far more devastating than anything Sir Richard said.  In fact, the Army chief did not criticise the Government. he may have questioned the good that British troops are doing in Iraq, but he did not say, as many believe, that the invasion of that country was misguided.

Brigadier Butler by contrast has found official policy in Afghanistan seriously wanting.

Will the Brigadier therefore be asked to resign for behaving ‘unconstitutionally’ – the charge levelled by many against Sir Richard?

I VERY MUCH DOUBT IT.

Hordes of angry columnists will not descend on him. Government spin doctors will not set out to destroy the poor man. Brigadier Butler may have gone further than his boss, but being less senior he will be allowed to get away with it.

Thank God for that THAT.

The fatwa against Sir Richard, which has been joined even by the critics of the Iraq War, Has been one of the amazing spectacles of recent times.  Not since the Glorious revolution of 1688, we are told has any Army leader criticised the Government in such terms.  His remarks have been described as profoundly unconstitutional – the sort of thing one might expect from a jumped up general in a banana republic with epaulets and tassels and lots of fake decorations.

[DOES IT NOT REMIND YOU OF SOMEONE WHO HAS ALREADY VISITED EUROPE AND THE USA TO COLLECT HIS REWARD FOR TREASON?]

This response is by no means limited to Tony Blair’s dwindling band of supporters. ‘A very bad show’ seems to be the view of many Tories.  What would have happened, they ask, if a leading Admiral or General had publicly expressed misgivings (which many Service Chiefs privately felt at the time) when Margaret Thatcher was assembling a task force to sail halfway around the world to retake the Falkland Islands?  Sir Richard has supposedly flouted conventions [of 300 years which New Labour has virtually destroyed] that have been hallowed by centuries.

This may seem an alluring argument to some , but consider again what the Army’s chief of staff said.  He did not at all lay into the Government. He gently questioned the sence of staying in Iraq very much longer. Was this really an affront to our ancient constitutional arrangements, as has been suggested?

It is very difficult to believe so.

The irony is that critics who wanted to sack Sir Richard for something that is far from constitutional outrage are strangely blind to Labour’s infinitely greater transgressions.  Here we have one solitary general speaking up bravely and unselfishly for the Army, which has been asked to take on even greater responsibilities by this government while being given even fewer resources.

And there we have an administration that has shown utter disregard for our unwritten constitution. It eviscerated the House of Lords, and yet, nine years after coming to POWER, has produced no plan for a robust and independent second chamber. Is that not a pretty serious flouting of the constitutional arrangements.

The presence of the unelected Alastair Campbell, Mr Blair’s spin doctor, ay Cabinet meetings was another constitutional novelty. So was the POWER given to Mr Campbell and his colleague Jonathan Powell, chief of staff at N010, to issue orders to civil servants.  The politicisisation of the Civil Service has been an enormous – and highly regrettable – constitutional revolution.

[What we have in No 10 is a pick and choose of the U.S constitution but without the TRUE SEPARATION OF POWERS.]

One could go on. Mr Blair has tried to set aside the conventions of Cabinet government and directed the foreign policy of this nation. He has, whenever feasible, ignored Parliament.

New Labour has swept away several ancient freedoms and aims to foist on us identity cards which, at any rate in peacetime, run counter to our traditions of liberty, as well as being ruinously expensive and doubtful ineffectual.

Nor , by the way, is it a treasured part of our established customs to have a former senior MINISTER – David Blunket – bickering in public with two senior ex-civil servants about what he may or may not have said to them, and done, when he was Home Secretary. Imagine the demeaning rows that will follow the publication of Mr Campbell’s even more lucrative diaries.

Without doubt the greatest constitutional outrage perpetuated by this government was to take us to war on a false claim about Iraq’s alleged weapons of mass destruction, supported by one dossier which had been tamperedwithby Alstair Campbell in order to instil alarm in the public mind, and a second dossier, entirely got up by him, which consisted of unattributed, recycled material and outright fabrication.

To accuse Sir Richard Dannatt of acting against the constitution, when this GOVERNMENT

-       has acted unconstitutionally on so many occasions seems so amazingly unjust, so grotesquely uneven – handed that one could ALMOST DESPAIR New Labour toadies are bound to seize on the imaginary mote in his eye while refusing to acknowledge the beam bulging out of theirs, but it is difficult to understand why more neutral parties should have cried out for his resignation while apparently forgetting Mr Blair’s many constitutional affronts.

HOW CAN THIS BE?

How can apparently sensible commentators censure Sir Richard for speaking up for his much-put-upon men while overlooking Mr Blair’s actual

CONSTITUTIONAL TRANSGRESSIONS?

[What has surprised many loyal subjects of the Queen and Constitution is that there has not been a

Coup de main to overthrown the Traitors to Queen and Country

And their incarcenation in the

Tower of London

Pending trial for

TREASON and their PUNISHMENT.

Most regrettably Sir Richard Dannatt only gave the GOVERNMENT advice whereas we were hoping for  a Cromwellian entry to the

HOUSE of COMMONS

To tell the greater majority of

TIME WASTERS

To be

BEGONE - WE NO LONGER NEED YOU!

It cannot be that that they are all on the New Labour band wagon; indeed, some most definitely are not.  They seem to betray a lack of moral imagination, a failure to grasp that Mr Blair, who often seems so nice, and acts so pleasantly, and was democratically elected, really can be a kind of political monster who has tricked this country into an unnecessary and calamitous war.

Sir Richard Dannatt is a Christian gentleman who put his job on the line fore his men. He does not remotely threaten the

BRITISH[ENGLISH]CONSTITUTION

-

any more than Brigadier Butler does.

They wee driven to say what they did because this

GOVERNMENT

-has been cavalier with British servicemen in pursuing its foreign adventures.

Rather than blathering on about how the hallowed arrangements of centuries have been undone, their critics should rejoice that there are still, despite everything tha has happened, some fine and good men in British public life.
