LONG LIVE PATRIOTISM

Appalled by how little children know about English history, one man decided to write a book about our achievements. Mad, said publishers. But he printed it himself, with results to inspire us all this

St.George’s Day.

This time last year, if anyone had suggested to me and my wife I would be spending almost every evening at home talking to strangers on the telephone with tears in our eyes, we wouldn’t have believed them for a second.

But that is precisely what happened when we launched

The Pocket Book Of Patriotism.

last Christmas - a short book celebrating the key historical events and characters from Stonehenge onwards that made our country what it is today.

We received literally thousands of letters and e-mails and hundreds of telephone calls from people who had bought the book-readers who wanted to share their love of England, their pride in our past and present, with a fellow patriot.

Neither of us was in any way prepared for this response nor have we ever been so consistently moved and touched.

Parents, grandparents, teachers, milkmen, doctors-a litany of people from all walks of life-rang to cite their favourite quotes from Great Englishmen in the book, to suggest illustrations or additions, to worry about omissions or simply wish us well.

Kind generous people without a scrape of spite or prejudice; first, second or third generation immigrants keen to express their gratitude to England, as well as those whose forebears have been here for centuries.

I write this not to blow my own trumpet-the book was never conceived as a commercial enterprise-

but to illustrate that there is an enormous and uplifting groundswell of people who are intensely proud of being ENGLISH

And what better day than today, St. George’s Day, to celebrate that fact?

Despite the best efforts of the politically-correct Establishment, which denigrates our past, millions of us want to shout about England and its achievements over the ages.

In the teeth of a teaching fraternity that is embarrassed by Empire, a thirst for knowledge about our history and Imperial heyday is alive and well.

Great swathes of us are proud to be patriots. How wrong are the PC brigade and the misanthropic magistrates who this week refused Norfolk publican Tony Bennett’s request for a drinking extension to celebrate St. George’s Day, on the grounds that it was not ‘special enough’ (even though he got an extension for Chinese New Year)!

The proof that they are wholly misguided is to be found in my bewildering experience with THE POCKET BOOK OF PATRIOTISM.

It all began on the train two Christmases

Ago. I commute daily from Essex to London and on that journey home for the holidays, I noticed a happy band of children sitting together in a huddle, comparing presents, laughing and singing carols.

As the train was about to pull away a boy with an arm in a sling puffed onto the carriage with a bundle of parcels. The children called him over but there were no seats available nearby. A kindly older woman offered to swop, suggesting little Lord Nelson might like to sit with his friends. He had clearly never heard of Nelson.

She pointed at his arm. ‘You know’ “England expects…” Admiral Nelson?’

‘Oh yeah!’ he replied.’ The guy in Star Trek!’

Shocked, I recounted the tale to my wife and children when I got home and we spent the rest of the holidays putting together a history chart of British dates and quotes that we thought were important, with at least an indication of what had been going on in the rest of the world to shape our country.

We finally pinned it on the loo wall ten days later, and all went back to school and work. Quite soon, friends who visited our house began to call asking for copies -and the process snowballed. Eventually people who had seen copies of copies called asking for copies.

I am no historian. This was just an ordinary father’s take on the history he wanted his children to know. Its very simplicity seemed part of its appeal, as well as the way it put things into context, with glorious and often familiar quotes such as Churchill’s ‘finest hour’, the words of great hymns or something from the Bible.

Time and again, parents said their children weren’t being taught this at school. Rather than finding out about Boadicea, they were encouraged to ‘empathise’ with a Roman slave; instead of Richard the Lionheart, they learnt about a put-upon kitchen scullion. I decided to try and get it published.

I spent three or four months expanding, checking, editing and lugging great big history books about. I was spurred on by horrifying stories that suddenly seemed to fill the papers: that nine out of ten British schoolchildren had never heard of the Ten Commandments; that an Anglican bishop refused to allow the hymn

in his churches; that many children had no idea that there were two World Wars, or even one.

Gradually the wallchart evolved into a book. It was time to pick a name.

The Greeks described barbarians as people with no memories, and it occurred to me that our history forms more than just our memories. The dates we choose to remember and especially the quotes-some of the finest words ever uttered in a language which is perhaps our greatest gift to mankind-define our very identity, which we carry around with us at all times.

I decided to call it The Pocket Book Of Patriotism. I approached some publishers. Seven agreed to see me. Their verdict was unanimous. They hated it.

Why did I have to use the word ‘patriotism’ that outdated, provocative, incendiary word?

Did I hate foreigners?

How dare I list the British Empire and Imperial territories in 1920?

Wasn’t that something we all wanted to forget?

Why had I included the Ten Commandments?

Was I determined to offend non-Christians?

In vain I protested that patriotism was surely a good thing: a simple love of country, a celebration of what we all share, not what divides us.

Of course I didn’t hate foreigners. Nor did I want my children to forget the British Empire. I expect them to be proud of it as I am. I refused to believe non-Christians would be offended by the Ten Commandments. The publishers disagreed. I was rejected out of hand.

My wife and I sat down and talked it through one evening. As a nurse and a NHS health visitor, a working mother of three boys, she had no qualms about cutting my wilder flights of fancy down to size.

I felt so strongly about it, I told her I wanted to publish it myself. And even though it ‘s hard to ignore expert after expert who tells you you’re a fool, we agreed to go for it.

We put our Morgan sports car up for sale: my show-off pride and joy, built in 1953. I imagined my boys driving their dates to May Balls in it, in some far off summer.

A friend with his own legal publishing business offered technical advice but insisted we must reduce the book to half its size if we were to break even. Reluctantly, I removed the potted biographies of great patriots and a list of beautiful poetry and prayers. Another friend from school, offered financial support. We got cracking.

I wanted it to look like a cross between the old British passport and an old school text book called Kennedy’s Latin Primer.

We had great fun choosing exactly the right type of British -made cream paper, binding and fonts and putting together a website. We ran off 50 trial copies: some to send to knowledgeable friends so they could check for errors and some to show to the bookshops that we hoped might stock it.

One bookshop agreed to take 25, another six, but all the others declined, having decided in April what books they would be stocking for Christmas. Not good. But we went ahead with publishing the first 10,000.

The books arrived on the morning of November 18, a Thursday. That evening we had a lunch party and sold 560. Over the weekend we received requests for another 2,500. Then on the Monday, Robert Hardman wrote about it in the Daily Mail-and the website took 87,000 hits and crashed. Frantically we called in IT specialists to upgrade it.

Other newspapers followed the Mail’s lead. Three days later the website crashed again, having taken 142,000 hits. The telephone was suddenly jammed by wholesalers, chains and small bookshops clamouring for copies. We sold all 10,000 in a week.

Our printer calmly took all this in his stride, producing second, third and fourth print runs at a moment’s notice in larger and larger increments, until we had exhausted the entire stock of British-made cream paper in the country.

For two days we fretted as the orders piled up, until he finally located some more and we were off again. Between November 23 and December 23 we sold 150,000 books.

How did it happen? How on earth did a modest little book with no marketing budget and barely a single original line of text, published by a floundering amateur against the best professional advice, reach the bestsellers’ list in a matter of days and stay there week after week?

Of course it was the word ‘patriotism’ in the title that did it. The vast majority of us love this country, just as we love our families and love our homes. Other countries have their virtues, but this is ours. It seems so obvious now, but why could nobody see it last summer?

Perhaps the politicians and much of the media, those who think they know best for us, simply don’t want us to care. Perhaps they hope in the end we will not care enough to object, not remember what it is we are losing, when they impose their grand masterplans.

Is that why our children

are being denied

the wonderful heritage that is their birthright,

and why they are encouraged to view our history,

our very individuality,

with indifference

and even downright shame?

But if the success of The Pocket Book Of Patriotism demonstrates anything at all, it is that we do still care. That is why 150,000 people went out of their way to track down an obscure little paperback, which happened to use the [supposed] outdated word- PATRIOTISM.

We now learn from the Daily Mail COMMENT on Christmas Eve that the Queen's Speech will cover the catastrophic fall in Values and Moral behaviour since the beginning of her 56 -year reign. This has been brought about by the actions of HER MINISTERS and the greater number of those in HER PARLIAMENT who have placed THEIR CONCERNS before the INTERESTS of THE PEOPLE and NATION STATE.

As for the fact that HER PEOPLE feel LOST that has been the direct result of the actions of HER SUCCESSIVE GOVERNMENTS and the TRAITOROUS POLITICIANS including PRIME MINISTERS who have stealthily over the 56 years of HER MAJESTY'S REIGN have almost achieved their aim of ENSLAVING the PEOPLE to a FOREIGN POWER.
The reason for the marked drop in the number viewing THE QUEEN'S SPEECH is no doubt because the mass of people have realised years ago that the MONARCH is powerless to PROTECT their WAY-OF-LIFE and events up to now have PROVED THEM CORRECT.
