THE BLITZ on PENSIONERS

THEY'RE RIGHT TO A DECENT STANDARD OF LIVING

Though today they are not being bombed out of their homes as their families were over sixty years ago, many of the survivors of that time are being treated as if they were the enemy. Surely in any civilized society provision is made for those who are needy particularly the elderly who represent the achievements made by this country in good and bad times.

The EDP applauds the former Sheriff of Shropshire who has become a council tax rebel to protest against the horrendous increase in rates - it is heartening to hear his resound of "Can pay - won't pay" from this former magistrate and High Sheriff of Shropshire in refusing to settle his council tax bill and is prepared to go to jail to protest against a rise of nearly 60% since Labour came to power. The unlikely rebel John Fielden said that successive increases well above inflation were hitting pensioners particularly hard and having a "a profound and terrible impact on peoples lives".

Mr Fielden 80, a local councilor who lives in Ludlow with his wife Lucy, said "This is NOT about my personal situation, I'm fortunate enough to be able to pay but there are many people who aren't - I feel very strongly about that."

Refusing to pay the Council tax was "the only effective way to make a stand and draw attention to these horrendous rises and persuade the authorities that they are totally unreasonable." In an echo of the POLL TAX protesters - he added - "if that means going to jail so be it."

Mr Fielden said "Council Tax was RISING FASTER THAN PENSIONS. This was putting a huge burden on the elderly and others on fixed income" He said "Their living standards are being eroded, many are finding it very hard to make ends meet."

He had received a letter from a Ludlow pensioner who was visited by BAILIFFS after he was unable to pay his Council tax. "They went through his house, but found that he didn't have enough things to cover the cost of the tax. That's how much some people are struggling."

We must thank the persistent endeavours of the SUNDAY TELEGRAPH who alighted on the story which must be just the tip of an ICEBERG - who revealed that millions of households in England - particulary in the South-East are facing Council tax's above 20%. Some areas have already seen rises of more than 80% since 1997, prompting allegations that Labour is hitting MIDDLE-ENGLAND with another STEALTH TAX. This is putting a huge burden on old people. Many are finding it very hard to make ends meet.

A spokesman for Age Concern said; " Older people are already suffering from Council tax rises and increases of 20% will cause more misery, just because people live in affluent areas doesn't mean there well off. They may own their own homes that have gone up in value but that's not money thay can spend."

Pensioners - who have survived the WORLD WAR 2 are now victims of their own governments uncontrolled spending on REFUGEE handouts and politically - correct projects which have cost the tax-payer billions of pounds over the past five years, and are estimated to reach over £3000,000,000 a year over the foreseeable future which will ensure that the most vulnerable in our society will suffer - they who enabled our NATION to survive and who many lost members of their families and suffered great hardship in the defence of their country and ensured the final liberation of Europe.

At a time we are experiencing at the moment, when the lives of our servicemen and women are once again at risk, by their unselfish devotion to their country and the cause of Freedom, it is inconceivable that a government would neglect the necessary provision for their dependents or those from other conflicts of the past.

OVER THIRTY FIVE YEARS AGO OUR FUTURE PENSIONERS EXPECTED TO RECEIVE A PENSION LINKED TO WAGES BUT THEY WERE BETRAYED BY THEIR GOVERNMENT AND THE END RESULT IS A REDUCED STANDARD OF LIVING BY MANY OF TODAYS HEROES OF THE PAST.
