Daily Mail
Wednesday, September 27, 2006
Tony Blair’s speech was full of boasts about his so-called successes and delegates had already been primed with a film of the party’s 50 top achievements since 1997. BUT do Mr Blair’s claims tell the full story?
Here we examine them –and list 50 things he omitted to say.
Health
Blair’s Boast
Labour has ‘cut waiting lists’ and ‘cancer deaths’. Britain now has ‘the largest ever building programme’.
The Truth
1.
1. NHS spending has doubled under Labour while a deficit of £500,000,000 this year has led to bed closures, cancelled operations and sacked doctors. On current trends the shortfall will be increased to
2.
£7 billion by 2010
2. Average waiting times have hardly changed. Some patients are stuck on hidden waiting lists for MRI scans for example –for a year or more.
3. The number of NHS managers up over 60 per cent between 1999 and 2005, is increasing three times as fast as new doctors and nurses.
4. Thousands of NHS-trained doctors cannot find jobs. Estimates suggest that over 11,000 trained doctors and 15,000 nurses are going to be unemployed.
5. We have one of the worst cancer survival rates in the developed world.
Education
Blair’s Boast
Britain has ‘the best educated children in our history’.
THE TRUTH
6.
Almost half of all boys and a third of girls leave primary school unable to write properly.
7.
Britain has fallen from second to ninth in the OECD league measuring the proportion of young people who graduate from university.
8.
The standard required at A level or GCSE has fallen by the equivalent of a grade since Labour came to power.
9.
The number of new bureaucrats and support staff in education has increased twice as fast as that of teachers.
10. The proportion of state school pupils gaining places
at university has fallen for two years running, and the university drop-out rate has risen to one in six.
The Middle East
Blair’s Boast
‘From now until I leave office I will dedicate myself to advancing Peace between Israel and Palestine.’
He also said: ‘If we retreat now .hand over Iraq to Al Qaeda…we won’t be safe.’
THE TRUTH
11. Before the invasion there were NO Al Qaeda terrorists in Iraq. Now the country is a breeding ground for them.
12. American intelligence claims the terrorist threat is greater now than before the [Iraq] war.
13. Mark Mallock Brown, a senior UN official, warned Mr Blair’s intervention in Lebanon would be counter-productive, since he was too closely associated with the disastrous war in Iraq.
14. George Bush famously dismissed Mr Blair’s offer to travel to the region on the day he greeted him with the [disdainful] iconic phrase,
‘Yo Blair
Constitution
Blair’s Boast
Labour has given Britain ‘a London Mayor, thankfully Labour again’ and delivered ‘devolution in Scotland and Wales.’
15. Mr Blair welcomed Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, back into the party only when he failed to find an official candidate who could beat him.
16. Reform of the House of Lords has stalled and Tony’s Cronies are being investigated by police in the cash-for-peerages affair.
17. Mr Blair’s choice as First Minister of Wales, Alun Michael, was forced out of the local party. The Labour First Minister in Scotland had to resign after an expenses scandal.
18. The Scottish parliament building cost £430million, ten times its original estimate.
Saving Africa
Blair’s Boast
‘Every day this Government has been in power, children in Africa have lived who otherwise would have died because this country led the way in cancelling debt and global poverty.’
TRUTH
19. LABOUR has failed to persuade South Africa to take Aids seriously, and millions have died as a result
20. Labour has failed to restrain Robert Mugabe, the Zimbabwean economy has been ruined, millions are in poverty, and civil rights no longer exist in the country.
21. Genocide has been continuing for years in Darfur and Britain has been unable to prevent it.
Crime.
‘Crime has fallen, not risen. We are the only Government since the war to do it.’
TRUTH
22. Recorded violent crime has risen for seven years in a row. Last year saw a record 2,300 offences per 100,ooo people – more than 3 times the limit in 1997,
23. Robbery rose 22 per cent last year, according to the British Crime Survey, and is up 47 per cent since 1997.
24.
Gun crime doubled from 12,8offences in 97 to 24,094 in 2004.
25. Cannabis –related offences rocked by 36 per cent – 32,000 more crimes – last year after Labour relaxed the law.
26. Prisons are overcrowded with a record 79,000 inmates resulting in early release of criminals and softer sentencing by courts.
27. More than a half a million violent crimes go unsolved each year. Police ONLY solve one in three sex crimes – half the success rate in 1997 – and just 18 per cent of robberies, down from 27 per cent.
28.
Statistics watchdogs want the Home Office stripped of its role in publishing crime figures to restore public trust.
The Military.
Blair’s Boast
‘ Not a day goes by when I don’t reflect on our troops with admiration and thanks – the finest, the best, the bravest any nation can hope for.’
TRUTH
29.
UK forces are stretched to the limit with a grave shortage of men and helicopters to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan [And long overdue armoured vehicles - only recently ordered from America at £30 million - not available for another few months]
30.
The lack of bomb-proof vehicles in Iraq [The American forces have for the past 18 months had a heavy duty armoured vehicle in Iraq and Afghanistan which our MoD has now ordered] has been heavily criticised by MPs. The invasion in 2003 was blighted by shortcomings in kit and supplies.
31. Labour has cut the Armed Forces by 10 per cent -22,000 jobs –axing scores of warships and aircraft and three infantry battalions. [Well Tony Blair needs the money for his EU Fantasy Army to which he has committed a great deal of our scarce resources resulting in the shortages of vital equipment –helicopters – armoured vehicles etc. which has resulted in the increased deaths of our servicemen in Iraq and Afghanistan ]
32. Key hardware projects are years behind schedule and billions of pounds over budget, including battlefield radios, aircraft carriers, spy planes, fighter jets and submarines.
33. Soldiers fighting in Afghanistan earn well below the minimum wage because of the huge number of hours worked. Junior private earn £45 per day – well under half the £5.05 minimum wage. Serving soldiers accuse the MoD of hiding the extent of casualties.
Asylum and Immigration
Blair’s Boast
‘Asylum applications are dealt with faster, removals are greater, the system infinitely better than the chaos we inherited in 1997.’
TRUTH
34.
On current trends, it would take more than
40 years
- to clear the backlog of asylum claims.
35.
In 2005 only 15,055 failed asylum seekers were sent home, a decrease on two years earlier, when 17,895 were deported. Only one in four failed asylum seekers is removed, a lower proportion than in 1997.
36. The Government has no idea how many illegal immigrants are here. Home Office estimates there could be 570,000, but others suggest it is nearer 900,000.
37. Labour’s Human Right’s Act has hindered deportation of foreigners, including criminals. Nine Afghans who hijacked a plane in 2000 have been allowed to settle here.
38.
The Government predicted that only 5,000 to 13,000 migrants would come from when 10 nations , headed by Poland joined the EU in 2004. So far 427,000 have arrived, excluding the self-employed, so the total is around 600,000.
D.Mail –Oct.2-2006 –Confidential report reveals the
£3.3billion
cost of migrants who
DON’T PAY TAX.
39.
Net immigration is at record levels, reaching 255,000 this year, compared to just 50,000 in 1997. One in five births in Britain are to foreign-born mothers.
Welfare
Blair Boasts
‘Before 1997, there were no tax credits…no minimum wage, no full time rights for part time workers, in fact nothing…we need more radical welfare reform, not to destroy the welfare state but to preserve it.’
TRUTH
40.
The tax credit system is overly complex. For two years in succession, it has made overpayments totalling £2.2 billion, while 900,000 are underpaid.
41.
Pension credit is so complicated that 1.6 million pensioners are not even claiming money which they are entitled.
42.
The bill for social security has risen to a record £316 billion and the Department of Work and pensions employs 125,000 staff, a larger workforce than the Army.
43.
Unemployment is increasing-up to 1.7million. Britain has the largest percentage of economically inactive men of any country in Europe.
44.
Some 2.7 million are claiming incapacity benefit, 40 per cent of them for mental health problems rather than physical disability. The number receiving this benefit for five years or more is now 20 times what it was in 1997.
45.
Overall fraud in the benefits system is costing £2.6billion a year.
The Family
Blair’s Boast
‘In 1997, we faced social division, with millions living in poverty, includiong over 3 million children. We reach out to those on the way up, ambitious for themselves and their families.’
TRUTH
46.
Half the children in inner London are still living in poverty. The number of people in temporary accommodation has gone up by 139 per cent since 1997.
47.
Some 42 per cent of all babies in England and Wales are born out of wedlock. The proportion of children living with only one parent stands at 27 per cent, way above the EU average.
48.
The backlog of cases at the Child Support Agency is more than 273,600 and £3.5 billion is unpaid.
49.
In 2000, the Government abolished the married couples tax allowance. With tax credits, lone parents are better off than a couple with one breadwinner.
50.
In 2004, 900,000 lone parents were receiving income support compared to 170,000 two parent families.
