IS THAT the TERROR BILL, being debated in the COMMONS?

TODAY’S vote on the TERRORISM BILL threatens to be one of the most cynical and wretched occasions in the nine-year history of the Blair Government.

 

The Prime Minister will present the Bill as a vital step towards building National Security. And there are, indeed, measures within it that are badly needed.

 

BUT many of them have very little to do with fighting TERRORISM. They are about something else entirely:

 

Winning Votes

and making

 

New Labour look good.

 

The TRUTH is that Tony Blair and his Ministers have politicised TERROR and are using it to cover up their past misdeeds and to achieve a narrow PARTY advantage.

 

And they are not just spinning the TERROR threat, they are LYING about it repeatedly, as I discovered while making the Dispatches programme

for Channel Four.

 

[Falsehood No 1]

 

Consider the so-called ‘ricin plot’ which was used by Chancellor Brown on Monday as a justification for ID cards.

 

For more than two years, Ministers- including the then Home Secretary David Blunket and the then Health Secretary John Reid - alleged that the deadly poison ricin had been discovered in a London flat in January 2003.

 

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell told the UN Security Council of a direct link between the British ricin plot and an alleged Al Qaeda poison camp in Iraq. Tony Blair endorsed these comments and used the ricin plot as a justification for the Iraq War.

 

Fiasco.

 

IN FACT RICIN HAD NEVER BEEN FOUND

-and the Ministerial announcements were FALSE.

 

The subsequent trials let to the conviction of just ONE MAN, Kamel Bourgass, who had murdered a policeman when the flat he was staying in was raided. ALL THE OTHER SUSPECTS WERE FREED.

 

BUT the falsity of official claims and the fiasco of the TRIALS have not prevented New Labour continuing to EXPLOIT the alleged plot for

POLITICAL PURPOSES.

 

As recently as last October 2005

 

Andy Hayman, Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner, used RICIN as a justification for the imposition of a

 

90-day period of detention

without trial.

[Falsehood No2]

 

Not long after the non-ricin find, an equally terrifying story was brought to public attention in April 2004.

We were told that thanks to a police tip-off the security were able to seize a terrorist gang just as it prepared to launch an audacious bomb attack on Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium on a match day, perhaps killing thousands of people.

 

Several arrests were made in a series of dramatic police raids.

 

IN FACT THIS TERRIFYING STORY WAS LATER SHOWN TO BE COMPLETELY UNTRUE.

 

Yet, quite disgracefully the Manchester Police have still not conducted an investigation into its origins.

 

Meanwhile, it has wrecked the lives of the suspects, some of whom were Kurdish immigrants on the run from Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. They lost their jobs and their reputation while the story fostered mistrust and engendered anti-Islamic prejudice.

 

BUT THEN such mendacity is par for the course in a Government, which will twist any truth to get its way or cover its back.

 

Don’t forget, however, that Tony Blair was also prepared to deceive the |British people in the aftermath of the London bombings on July 7.

 

The Prime Minister and his Ministers repeatedly denied that there was a link between the atrocities and the invasion of Iraq.

 

Of course, it was easy to see why: If Mr Blair acknowledged the connection; he might get some of the blame for the outrages. But by denying the connection, the Government might have prevented an effective response.

 

With the Prime Minister refusing to admit the obvious fact that some Muslim extremists in Britain might have been drawn to TERROR by the Iraq War, there is the danger the Intelligence Services looked to the wrong targets.

 

With Mr Blair repeatedly denying the palpably obvious connection, is it any wonder that the Police have been slow to investigate the inflammatory activities of militant Muslim preachers.

 

These political falsehoods are desperately damaging.

 

Nobody would deny that we are facing the greatest terrorist threat in our history [From Tony Blair and his cronies in Parliament and in the country] BUT rather than confronting it squarely, Tony Blair and his Government are fighting it the wrong way.

 

We are being asked to give up our civil liberties - such as

 

Habeas Corpus

 

 

-the ancient protection against arrest without charge - in order to fight TERROR.

 

BUT ONLY a Government which commands the TRUST of the British people is in a position to ask us to surrender those liberties.

 

AND BY LYING TO US TIME AND TIME AGAIN-and continuing to do so even when the FACTS DISPUTE IT -this Government has LOST THE RIGHT TO THAT TRUST.

 

Back in November 2005, MPs flung out Tony Blair’s proposals for 90 -days’ detention without trial for terrorist suspects. Political reporters at the time said the defeat was an indication of the Prime Minister’s political weakness.

 

Partisan

 

The problem went much deeper than that. I believe that the Commons defeat actually signalled a National Crisis in Public Trust. Few people now believe what the Prime Minister, the Police or the Security Services tell us about SECURITY MATTERS.

 

Almost as bad, New Labour is treating the fight against TERRORISM as a PARTISAN battle from which it can draw Party Advantage.

 

[Well the Government must accept full censure from the British people should their plans result in gross ineptitude in dealing with the Security of the Nation. The great tragedy will be that the people may suffer needless distress because the matters affecting the country were not dealt with within a unified

 

ALL PARTY AGREEMENT.]

 

IT IS A GREAT TRADITION

OF OUR NATIONAL

POLITICAL CULTURE

THAT AT TIMES OF

NATIONAL CRISIS

ALL SIDES COME TOGETHER AND WORK

FOR THE

COMMON GOOD.

 

That happened during the two Great Wars of the last century and even during the Great Depression of the Thirties.

AND YET, at the very moment Britain faces the most dangerous terrorist threat in our history, Tony Blair has sought to make TERROR a PARTY ISSUE.

 

The Prime Minister has repeatedly rejected offers from the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats to work together to fight TERROR

 

[for the GOOD of ALL the people in our Island of whatever political persuasion.]

 

In order to obtain a narrow Party advantage and score political points he smashed the cross-party consensus between Labour, Tory and Liberal Democrat, in the wake of the

London Bombings.

 

The result was last August’s ’12 -point plan’, which formed the basis of the

 

TERRORISM BILL

 

-being debated in the

 

House of Commons

 

today. [Wed -FEB 15-2006].

 

 

Panicky

 

Rather than a judicious consideration of how to deal with the problem, it was a panicky response to deep public anxiety over the atrocities as MPs were about to set off on their Summer holidays while the country coped with the aftermath of 7/7.

The Prime Minister - himself about to fly to Cliff Richard’s holiday island in the Caribbean-rushed through the TERROR announcements to avoid a panning in the Press.

 

The result was one of the most panicky and badly drafted pieces of legislation in Parliament’s history, which eminent legal minds -including the former Law Lord, Lord Lloyd of Berwick - believe will bring the LAW into DISREPUTE.

 

And the worst example of this is the proposal being debated to day -the Government measure to ban the ‘glorification ‘of terrorists acts.

 

In short, too much of this Bill is about

 

SHOW

 

The Government is ready to pass LAWS which generate good headlines and sound tough, even though they know the legislation

 

WON’T ACTUALLY WORK.

 

It is about ‘being seen to be tough’ rather than dealing with the REAL domestic TERROR THREAT.

 

In the long term, this is disastrous. TERRORISM will never be seen off by a Government that persists in

 

LYING

 

-to us about the nature of the threat or showy new laws that threaten civil liberties.

 

THE REAL SOLUTION LIES MUCH DEEPER.

 

WE NEED TO LOOK TO THE CAUSES OF TERRORISM

 

AND ERADICTE THEM.

 

That is WHY today’s TERRORISM BILL is NOT the answer.

 

IN FACT, IT COULD MAKE THINGS WORSE

Well everyone one now knows that this was a LIE and when a Lie is found out it can only be concealed by a bigger Lie and Tony Blair has had nine years to perfect this untruth which we see revealed in the way OUR once GREAT COUNTRY is now reviled in many countries in the World.

 

In centuries past Tony Blair and his cronies in PARLIAMENT and in the country would have been OUTLAWED and given just a few days to leave the KINGDOM or face execution. No wonder Blair is intent in destroying the
