How the liberal LEFT after vilifying British values, nationalism and culture-performs another U-TURN

Saturday, September 24, 2005 So the Left were wrong on this, too. by Simon Heffer BEFORE Trevor Phillips became chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality, he devoted himself to pursuing and attacking racists real and imagined. One man he reserved particular loathing for was the late Enoch Powell. It was back in April 1968 that Powell made his so-called ‘rivers of blood ‘speech, which established him as a hate figure for the likes of Mr Phillips. Powell
warned: Immigration was being permitted on a scale too large to allow the immigrants to integrate properly into our society. TODAY, the best part of 40 years after, Mr Phillips now shares these views and warns of the dangers society faces when some of its main immigrant groups won’t, or can’t, integrate. However, because Mr Phillips
is a member of an ethnic minority, his views are respected and NOT deemed
outrageous. I don’t know whether to be amused or disgusted that the liberal Left is now changing its mind on this vital political question, as it has already done o so much else. But is should not be allowed to get away with this
without confronting the damage caused by years of vilifying British values,
nationalism and culture. Tragically,
many on the political Right have been intimidated into silence by this
pernicious culture, for fear of appearing ‘nasty’. As a result the ruling elite’s mad policy of
multiculturalism, where traditional values have been treated as dispensable or
even downright offensive, has proceeded virtually unchecked, leading to a modern Britain
of inflammatory Imams, Suicide bombers, Yardies. Drive-by shootings and the
loathsome BNP. Mr
Phillips cannot be surprised that some of us, who deeply resent what he and his
fellow travellers have done to this country, feel obliged to point out his
former ignorance and stupidity. OF COURSE, the failure of
multiculturalism is not the only disastrous policy for which the LEFT should apologise. They already had to admit
they were monumentally wrong on unilateral nuclear disarmament, nationalism,
the power of trade unions and the cancer of inflation. But when will they also admit their huge mistakes in promoting the destruction of the Family - by glorifying single parenthood, promoting a cult of non-judgmentalism and creating a tax and benefits system that encourages people to have children out of wedlock? When will they
admit they were wrong? About the softly softly approach to crime and drugs? When will they
admit they were wrong? to abolish grammar schools and impose their mad progressive values on our devalued education system? Or bleed the productive sectors of the economy to pay
hundreds of thousands of pointless public sector jobs. I am in favour of Trevor
Phillips owning up to the fact that we need a new, realistic approach to
immigration and what are tactfully called ‘community relations’. BUT
HOW WONDERFUL IT WOULD BE if the rest of the liberal intelligentsia’ finally admitted THAT
THEY WERE WRONG about so much else THAT HAS DONE IRREPARABLE DAMAGE TO
THIS COUNTRY. [Font
