| Deafening silence of our GUTLESS LEADERS
By Platell's People D.Mail-November25-2006 SHORTLY after Tony Blair became Prime Minister, his rottweiler Alistair Campbell, announced: 'We don't do God'. Never mind that 70 per cent of Britain's who describe themselves as Christians, or that the faith is embedded in our culture, laws and traditions. The message was clear:
Christianity in Blair's Britain would be treated with contempt. And so it has proved. This week our Prime Minister (a devout practicing Christian, remember) refused to comment over a blatant act of religious oppression when British Airways refused to allow Nadia Eweida to wear a silver cross to work. Blair was joined in that chorus of silence by our next PM, Gordon Brown as well as the Tory leader David Cameron and the Libdems Ming Campbell. ALL CLAIM TO BE CHRISTIANS. ALL SAY THEY ARE DEFENDERS OF BRITISH VALUES BUT NONE SPOKE UP. Have we ever had a more gutless bunch of individuals leading this country? It was left to the Ugandan-born Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, to speak for the silent majority in this country when he attacked BA for turning its back on our nation's Christian heritage. Dr Sentamu said:
'Wearing a cross carries with it not only a symbol of our hopes, but also a responsibility to act and live as Christians, of our duties to one another.'
Unlike our own political masters, he was brought up in a country that knows real suffering. He fought genuine injustice. He knows that liberties can never be taken for granted, and is not afraid of the battle to protect them. WE NEED MORE MEN LIKE HIM. Instead , we have leaders who are so frightened of offending minority faiths - and so desperate to indulge their every whim - that they have forgotten they are elected to serve the MANY and not the FEW. WE may not be a church-going nation, but we are a Christian one. And there has never been a greater need for strong moral leadership than NOW. I applaud all those MP's, including Jack Straw and Peter Hain, who condemned British Airways. I am delighted that the airline has been forced to see the error of its ways. The GOVERNMENT will then be able to provide those who have opted out with BRITISH DOCUMENTATION -only such as British (not EU) passports, driving licences and other national documents.
