An Urgent Warning to the Conservative Party-from a Conservative member.

Eurofacts (letters) – 11th June -2004

A correspondent from Devon to Eurofacts prior to the recent EU Election has given an apt and compelling argument of the need of the Conservative Party to make a choice as to its future direction in the affairs of our Country.

Recent YOUGOV opinion polls reveal a substantial support for the United Kingdom Independence Party which advocates withdrawal from the European Union- without evasion or equivocation. At the time of writing [1-6-04?] it seems likely that the UKIP will poll more votes than the Lib Dems in the 10th June elections to the EU Parliament.

Leaders of the three main political parties insist that their parties will not consider leaving the EU in spite of the fact that they fully understand that a majority of the British people are disenchanted with the EU and its entire works.

The people know that the Common Agricultural Policy is a failure and the Common Fisheries Policy is a disaster.  They know that fraud and corruption are endemic and that Commissioner Neil Kinnock’s efforts to deal with the problem have been inept and petulant – he has been tough on the whistle blowers but worse than useless in controlling fraud which is now said to amount to £700 million a year.

People are becoming increasingly disillusioned with the EU in general and policies in particular.

The Conservative Party remains in thrall to Messrs. Heath, Howe, Hurd, Heseltine, Brittan, Patten and [Kenneth] Clarke- [Europhiles] and all yesterday’s men.

If the Party is to stand any chance of winning the next General Election it must seriously reconsider its position on Europe.  Its slogan “In Europe but not run by Europe” ignores the simple truth that the Treaties of Rome, Maastricht, Amsterdam and Nice- also the Single Market legislation- have ensured that our country has already lost its independent status to a very large extent.

Talk of not giving away on the so-called Red-Lines had been undermined by the subsequent acquiescence when the big hitters in Berlin and Paris have turned up the heat.(See our Eurofacts Bulletin –Red-Lines Multiply)

As a member of the Conservative Party I feel obliged to warn that if it does not [NOW!] put clear water between itself and the Labour and the Lib-Dems in relation to the EU it can look forward to another decade in debilitating opposition.”

[The correspondent’s account could not have been more accurate – it is what millions of people have said in every Constituency in the country over the past decades – but the politicians thought they knew best.  Well! they now have their answer.]
