Over its long history England has been the refuge of GOVERNMENTS IN EXILE as recent events on our streets have testified. THE COLONIAL HERITAGE

Part of the heritage that the colonies were to bequeath the young nation is evident at a glance.  The fact of a common language, the English tongue, was of immeasurable value.  It was one of the great binding elements which made a nation possible.

The long and steadily broadening experience with representative forms of government was another priceless part of our heritage.

[With the signing of the NEW EU TREATY our whole system of government if you could call it that will no longer be ENGLISH. It will be a system more familiar to the continent and to the collective dictatorships we see all around the world.]

We may take it rather for granted until we remember that the French and Spanish colonies had nothing to show in respective self-government; the British alone permitted their colonists to erect governments in which both electors and representatives had real  political responsibility.

[Well we all know the reaction of our 'NONSENSE' lawyer our MAN OF STRAW and now the overstatedly described JUSTICE MINISTER who witnessed an 82 -year-old party activist Walter Wolfgang being forcefully  thrown out of the Labour Conference and then threatened with the TERRORISM ACT which the HOUSE OF COMMONS had previously assured its critics would only be used for the purpose for which the law provided. We all know how this has become the usual feature of NEW LABOUR to silence its critics about the ILLEGAL INVASION OF IRAQ and many other matters that they try to hide.]

The general spirit of religious toleration in the colonies, and recognition that different sects could and should get on with entire amity, must be included in the roster. Every faith was protected under the British flag; despite the traditional fear of Catholicism in England. Parliament was even charged by some colonials after 1763 with showing excessive favour to the religion.   Equally valuable was the spirit of racial toleration, for people of different blood - English, Irish, German, Huguenot, Dutch, Swedish  -mingled and intermarried with little thought of any difference. . . .

And we should mention the strong spirit of

INDIVIDUAL ENTERPRISE

which manifested itself in the colonies; an INDIVIDUALISM always noteworthy in Britain herself, but which was now heightened under the pressure of life in a rich but wild and difficult land.   The British never permitted such monopolies within its colonies as had crushed individual effort in the French and Spanish dominions.

ENTERPRISE irrepressibly responded to OPPORTUNITY.

[Well! we already know that we are now forced into entry into the socialist/collectivist system in the EU which  as the French President has stated and a codicil included in the abominable EU TREATY of their PROTECTIONIST ideals which will entail great loss to the ENTERPRISE in our PROVINCES of ENGLAND though as we all know the name of a country which brought to the world the unique parliamentary democracy will not be mentioned on any map of the monstrous creature of the so-called UNITED STATES OF EUROPE which will prove to be the killer of INDIVIDUALITY and ENTERPRISE and will retain the image and workings of a SOVIETISED COLLECTIVIST SYSTEM with its ELITE which will feed on the huge carcass  down to the bones of the creature until it is finally disinterred to leave a greatly damaged economy and broken spirit which could take decades for the emerging newly formed independent Nation States to recover.   Better it would be if ENGLAND stayed outside the self-destructing entity and protect its natural advantages in trade and national independence and free action in the world at large rather than be trapped in an deep abyss of collectivist doctrine which looks after the special ELITE who whatever happens  as we have seen with the fraudulent and greedy bankers throughout the world who understand that they will not be the losers as they have the over-taxed TAXPAYERS everywhere who

WILL HAVE TO PAY THE BILL.

Wherever the colonists went, they carried with them in theory the rights of freeborn Britons, inheriting the traditions of the English struggle for

The Virginia legislature, born in 1619, began at once to make a variety of laws.   When the Crown revoked the charter of the Virginia Company, the House of Burgesses continued to show undiminished vigour.  Indeed, within a few years it laid down certain fundamental rules upon its own rights.  It declared that the governor was not to levy any taxes without legislative authority; that the money raised was to be employed as the legislature directed; and that the burgesses were to be exempt from arrest.

A little later the House declared that nothing might contravene a legislative act, while it took steps to safeguard

After the Stuart Restoration Connecticut obtained a CHARTER from the CROWN (1662), but it was drawn in amazingly liberal terms; the FREEMEN were to have power to GOVERN THEMSELVES., just as they liked, subject only to the vague restriction that no laws should be contrary to those of ENGLAND. .  .

Its strength lay in its power to represent public opinion, and in its control of the PURSE; the same elements which made PARLIAMENT so powerful in Britain after 1689

[The influence of the Protector Oliver Cromwell was evident here because it was he one in England during his PROTECTORSHIP had endeavoured to introduce a law to protect the FUNDAMENTALS of the CONSTITUTION and it is because of that failure that our so-called representatives have been able to sign the TREATY of TREASON and at a stroke destroy the very foundation of the ENGLISH CONSTITUTION since 1295.]

The colonists had done much for themselves and posterity in winning and holding REPRESENTATIVE INSTITUTIONS. Three fundamental facts distinguished their POLITICAL SYSTEM. The  first was the exalted valuation they played upon WRITTEN CHARTERS as guarantees of their LIBERTIES.

But  from the earliest years the colonists had learned to hold sacred the rights written into the CHARTERS granted to trading-companies, proprietaries, or the PEOPLE themselves.  This regard for a written system of FUNDAMENTAL LAW  was to have a profound effect on AMERICAN HISTORY

The second fundamental fact was the almost constant conflict between the GOVERNORS and the ASSEMBLIES.  They represented two antagonistic elements [So essential in a TRUE DEMOCRACY]: the governor standing for vested interests and imperial interests, the assembly for POPULAR RIGHTS and LOCAL INTERESTS.  .  .
