Growing pensioner population will soon find their occasional outing by car a nightmare in speed-trap – sign-ridden Every day of every year some unsuspecting pensioner and others driving on the road will have to have eyes of a hawk to see around the next corner a cunningly placed sign followed by a Speed Camera which even the most careful elderly driver on the road when being pressured from a impatient motorist because they are observing the rule of the road will find that in a few weeks he will receive a notification that his vehicle was clocked by a speed-camera. It matters not how careful the pensioner drives he has little hope of avoiding the situation when on an open stretch of road no way near a well-lit built up area a sudden change down from a 40 limit to 30 is so contrived that by the time the pensioner is aware of the sign the speed camera is upon them and they become one of tens of thousands of pensioners who are caught on camera on their rare outing of freedom from their local law-ridden streets. We are not against speed cameras in principle provide they are ONLY used sparingly in a conspicuous manner in locations where significant loss of life has occurred but their use should NOT be such as to be a means of extra financing of local authorities through the Treasury instead of the purpose for which they were at first introduced to deter the countless maniacs on the roads. Pensioners are not as far as we are aware top of the list for breaking the law and particularly as motorists –in fact some element might be censored for driving too carefully. There can be no doubt that with a significant growth in the pensioner population it will be a growing nightmare to have to watch for a cunningly placed speed camera on a stretch of out of town roads with little or no ribbon development and as a consequence will make many of them so nervous of the experience that they cannot bare to chance it on their very occasional trip into freedom and the countryside. No doubt the Green Lobby might be pleased but it will be a growing nightmare for the elderly who look forward to their occasional outings and the freedom it offers. With the aging population it might be of help to rid the streets and roads of the country of the litter-bug mentality of those bureaucrats who find erecting yet another sign as a impulsive addiction of the shot in the arm with the growing road signs in situations where the confusing array of speed signs are giving the more vulnerable in our society increased concern because of the growing multitude of speed cameras and changes of speed which in many parts of the country are now becoming so prolific that it will soon be almost impossible for even the careful pensioner driver to avoid the ensnarement’s around the country. Safety on the road of course is paramount but when it becomes so that it affects those who have grown up in an environment which has changed so significantly over their long lifetime to the point where they find it no longer the place where they wish to end their days. Possibly this is a factor in mind when many millions of pensioners over the years have decided to leave the country of their birth for a less populated and less stressful environment. Another point to understand that for a pensioner who has had decades with a clean licence and at their advanced age to receive an endorsement on their licence –not for driving at 150 miles an hour –not for driving at 100 miles an hour –or 80- or 60 –or 40 but at 35 miles an hour coming from a 40 mph sign suddenly onto a 30mph sign so unexpectedly which we understand particularly during night hours on a main country road away from a populated area by a cunningly placed speed camera so close after the speed sign in question which on later investigation was identified as a notorious example of a speed camera in place – NOT FOR SAFETY BUT AS A CASH MACHINE FOR LOCAL AUTHORITIES And TREASURY TO ADD TO CENTRAL GOVERNMENT FUNDS. The answer for the Government is to remove those unnecessary road signs and the money-spinning speed cameras which have no safety aspect in mind and remember that the increased number of changing speed limits in the country will in fact cause more accidents than before they originally encouraged the use of SPEED CAMERAS. Though we are loath to suggest more signs on our roads though the signs we propose should save motorists millions of £’s. A solution we would suggest is for there to be a courtesy sign placed a little before the present distance before the ability to sight the oncoming adjusted speed sign which would give an earlier warning to the motorist of the oncoming sign to reduce speed. It could have the conventional outer red ring with a green inner circle with a red ‘C’ which would have the appropriate finish in order to be reflective at night (where it is more helpful to elderly drivers) to indicate a preliminary cautionary message to the motorist to expect a road sign requesting a reduction of speed. It will cost the Government millions of £’s in missed revenues but it would improve traffic flow in general and reduce the accidents caused by motorists violently braking when they come suddenly upon a speed reduction sign which they had failed to see earlier enough. It will slow down the traffic which will no doubt make some motorists impatient but the reality is that if every vehicle had a speed regulator that did not permit a vehicle to exceed the limit it would cause daily a massive traffic hold-up throughout the country. One other point to bear in mind that there are millions of elderly pensioners who would have no difficulty of finding £60 but there are also a few million who are not but keep a car in order to give themselves an occasional special outing. So any help that can be done to improve the road signs and their particular location and remove those that confuse motorists the safer it will be. But a better solution would be to remove the vast majority of speed cameras all together and get more police on our roads culling the growing maniacs who are still killing and seriously injuring more motorists than before the SPEED CAMERAS were introduced in order so that priority is not the gathering of revenue for the Government but safer roads and the return of the once respect for the police officer and his duties which we all count on to protect us from those few but dangerous lunatics who are at present laughing at the police and the speed cameras. It is typical New Labour to overdo everything they do whether it is in Safety on the roads in the community or any other of their politically correct doctrines which have now been revealed as like the plague which many of their past adherents are now trying to disclaim. Almost ten years of Tony Blair and his control freak ideas have to a great degree made many people think there is no room to live a free life and enjoy the limited life span they are granted in Blairdom. We see this in our schools in our valued voluntary institutions and in most aspects of our already controlled lives. The poll suggests many of us are far more worried about not getting enough sleep and the stresses of everyday living than smoking, drinking or poor diets. Public Health experts believe the findings reflect the increasing pressure of surviving in a 24-hour society. They have warned that the strain of modern life –in which employees work longer hours and spend less time with family and friends –could be costing the health of millions. Even when workers go home, mobile phones [One cannot even get away from their accused tomes even when one is trying to enjoy what summer we have outside in the garden and the usually loud enquires whether the office has ordered the latest stationery or booked the flight to Timbuktu amongst other boring information which could be left when they return to the office. We now hear that Ryanair intends this scourge to be available to their customers shortly what bedlam what trivia the other passengers will have to listen too in such a captured market.] and the internet has made it harder to ‘switch’ off and relax. Researchers asked more than 5,000 men and women about their biggest health worries over the past three months. Nearly half said lack of exercise was their number one health concern. Lack of sleep followed at 42 per cent while 34 per cent said general fatigue was a major worry. More than a quarter blamed stress as a cause of anxiety while almost the same number said they worried about feeling depressed. Passive smoking however, was mentioned by 15 per cent of those surveyed and drinking by just 12 per cent. Only 14 per cent said they worried about not following a healthy diet and a fifth about food additives, such as salt, colouring and preservatives. Chris Rolland, director of healthcare at Legal and General; which commissioned the survey said: ‘It is becoming clear that people are far more worried about the way we live our lives, the lack of sleep and stress than smoking and drinking. ‘There are a few things more important in life than health; so it is vital that people look at the causes of a poor lifestyle to ensure their health is not compromised and hopefully prevent burnout.’ Angela Mawle, chief executive of the UK Public Health Association said: ‘This research shows that the 24/7 society is getting to us. ‘Blackberries and mobile phones mean we are always on call. It is hard to slow down and people struggle to find the time to relax. So Warwickshire Casualty Reduction Partnership claims most drivers like SPEED-CAMERAS (The [ Poppycock! (You wouldn’t print the word I really want to use.) This is another example of a “scamera” partnership twisting the truth to justify these infernal devices. Let’s face it; they can’t even be honest about what they are. THEY ARE NOT SAFETY CAMERAS THEY ARE SPEED CAMERAS Pass one while driving perfectly safely but a little over the speed limit and the cameras goes ‘Kerching! -£60 and three points!’ Pass one while blind drunk in the dark with no lights on, weaving all over the road inches behind the car in front but below the speed limit and the camera does nothing. Maybe that’s why, while the past ten years have seen a huge increase in speeding convictions, convictions for drunk and dangerous driving have gone down. What hasn’t gone down though is the number of people killed and seriously injured every year on our roads, which has effectively remained at the same level ever since SPEED Cameras were introduced in the early 90’s HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? - as the scamera partnerships claim –speed cameras save lives. THE TRUTH is that breaking the SPEED LIMIT isn’t the MAJOR CAUSE of ACCIDENTS the AUTHORITIES CLAIM. It is though easy to detect and punish people for, with 2,200,000,000 -speeding convictions in 2005 generating over £120,000,000 -in fines. A fat slice of which goes to the Treasury. As for most drivers supporting speed cameras, well I conducted an internet survey of Warwickshire residents that showed 100 per cent HATE SPEED CAMERAS.
