Politicians asked for a 20 per cent pay rise yesterday and even more cash for long-serving MPs.

 

The claim would give them an extra

 

12,000 a year.

[This sum is at least £ 2000 more than what pensioner couples have to live on in 2006 because politicians in 1981 decided to fix pensions to inflation instead of earnings which has deprived hard-up pensioners of at least

 

£30 per week.]

Tory MP Sir Nicholas Winterton argued they earned 20 per cent less than senior public figures and businessmen.

 

He said the 2 per cent rise agreed in the Commons yesterday, which takes MPs’ pay to

 

£60,277

 

-was not enough?

 

[Well a majority of the politicians would not last a week in the business world if they showed the same incompetence and lack of individual thought and energy.

 

Many of them have cost the taxpayer billions of pounds in wasted projects and their mania for legislation, which has to be followed by further laws to correct the new problems they have created.

 

The state of the country in 2006 is down to the actions of ALL the members of the House of Commons.

 

If an account of the cost of the failed schemes and waste was taken into consideration the MPs would find that they would have a debt to pay to their constituents and the country which would take them a lifetime to pay.

 

Instead of a 20 per cent rise they should have their salaries deducted by at least 40 per cent. And those who have been longer in the job should be sacked because they should know better.

Oliver Cromwell who knew well how to deal with a useless and dangerous Parliament.

Vane, Wentworth, and Martyn rose to reply to him, but he would not suffer them to speak.

 

“You think perhaps, He said,

“that this is not parliamentary language; I know it; but expect no other language from me.”

 

Wentworth at length made himself heard; he declared that this

 

“Was indeed the first time that he had ever heard such unbecoming language in the Parliament; and that it was more horrid, in that it came from their servant, and their servant whom they had so highly trusted and obliged, and whom, by their unprecedented bounty, they had made what he was.”

 

Cromwell thrust his hat upon his head, sprang from his seat into the centre of the floor of the House. And shouted out,

 

“Come, come, we have had enough of this; I’ll put an end to your prating - Call [troops] them in!”

 

He added briefly to Harrison; the door opened, and twenty or thirty musketeers entered, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Worsley.

 

“You are no Parliament,”

cried Cromwell;

 

“I say, you are no Parliament!

 

Begone!

 

Give way to honester men.”

 

He [Cromwell] walked up and down the floor of the House, stamping his foot, and giving his orders.

 

“Fetch him down,” he said to Harrison, pointing to the Speaker, who remained in his chair. Harrison told him to come down, but Lenthall refused.

 

“Take him down,” repeated Cromwell; Harrison laid hand on the Speaker’s gown, and he came down immediately. Algernon Sidney was sitting near the Speaker.

 

“Put him out,” said Cromwell to Harrison. Sidney did not move.

 

“Put him out,” reiterated Cromwell. Harrison and Worsley laid hands on Sidney’s shoulders, upon which he rose and walked out.

 

“This is not honest,” exclaimed Vane,

“ It is against morality and common honesty!”

 

“Sir Harry Vane! Sir Harry Vane! replied Cromwell;

 

“ you might have prevented this extraordinary course; but you are a juggler, and have not so much common honesty. The Lord deliver me from Sir Harry Vane!”

 

And amidst the general confusion, as the members passed out before him, he flung nicknames in the face of each,

 

“Some of you are drunkards!

 

He said pointing to Challoner;

 

“Some of you are adulterers!”

 

and he looked at Sir Peter Westworth;

 

“Some of you are corrupt unjust persons!”

 

and he glanced at Whitelocke and others; then, turning to Henry Martyn, he said,

“Is a whoremaster fit to sit and govern?”….

 

He [Cromwell] went to the table on which the mace lay, which was carried before the Speaker, and called to the soldiers,

 

“What shall we do with this bauble? Hear take it away.”

 

He frequently repeated;

 

“It is you that have forced me to this, for I have sought the Lord night and day, that he would rather slay me than put me upon the doing of this work.”

[Another episode which occurred at the time of the termination of the Long Parliament by Cromwell was his

 

‘disapproval of a permanent Parliament was deep and genuine. His faith in the disinterested virtue of the Commonwealthsmen had been shattered on learning that they were forcing through a bill to perpetuate their own power’(Gooch & Laski)

 

‘In every government there must be somewhat fundamental, somewhat like a Magna Carta, which should be unalterable. That Parliaments should not make themselves perpetual is a fundamental. Liberty of Conscience is a fundamental. That the command of the Militia should be placed so equally that no party in Parliament or out of Parliament have the power of ordering it is a fundamental’

Have we not had such an attempt by New Labour to do the same thing a few weeks ago -‘Abolition of Parliament Bill’

 

As we have indicated before - NO member of Parliament should sit in successive terms in office which would prevent them getting too dependent on pleasing the Executive to the detriment of the democratic process.
