Much of the British media have fallen in love again with Tony Blair after his admittedly striking speech on Tuesday.  Newspapers which berated his policy in Iraq forget their former misgivings and proclaim Tony Blair a political genius, the like of whom we will never see again.

Undoubtedly he is a genius, but not in the sense that is normally meant. He has carried fantasy and self-delusion to unparalleled heights in any leading politician of the modern age. He believes that he should stay in office until the summer – a view endorsed by acolytes such as Alan Johnson, Education Secretary – partly so that he can help broker a settlement between Israel and Palestine.

Anyone who knows anything about the Middle East understands that it is inconceivable that any settlement can be achieved soon. If a solution is eventually found, it certainly won’t be through the auspices of a man who is loathed, by the Palestinians. Mr Blair is almost the last man in the world who could achieve a resolution.

His remarks on Iraq were equally illuminating. He said that ‘if we retreat now, hand over Iraq to Al Qaeda…we won’t be safer.’ What he did not say was that until the Anglo-American invasion of Iraq neither Al Qaeda nor any other terrorist group had a presence in that country.  He had inadvertently conceded that the war has made Iraq more dangerous to the West

Parts of which were leaked over the weekend to the

New York Times.

The Bush administration has just released a portion of the document –

Less than 10 per cent of the total – in the hope of redressing the effects of the earlier report.

IN FACT, IT TENDS TO CONFIRM ITS WORST FEARS.

According to the

National Intelligence estimate,

‘the Iraq jihad [holy war] is shaping a new generation of terrorist leaders and operatives; perceived jihadist success there would inspire more fighters to continue the struggle elsewhere.

It adds that:

‘the Iraq conflict has become the cause celebre for jihadists breeding resentment of U.S. involvement in the Muslim world and cultivating supporters for the global jihadist movement.’

These are the conclusions of America’s intelligence agencies –

not of a bunch of anti –war protesters.  The war in Iraq HAS increased the terrorist THREAT.  It has encouraged the jihadists.

THE National Intelligence Estimate adds that:

‘the jihadists regard Europe as an important venue for attacking Western interests.’

THAT’S US.

This is, of course, the opposite of what the Blair-Bush ‘war on terror’ was supposed to achieve.  We were told that the defeat of the Taliban in Afghanistan would undermine Al Qaeda.  There was certainly no suggestion that the invasion of IRAQ would make us

MORE vulnerable to TERRORISM.

If we had known that this would be the outcome of the war, would a single person in the country have supported IT?

[Well if the so-called Her Majesty’s Opposition had NOT supported the illegal invasion of Iraq the Government with many dissenters on its side would NOT have gone to WAR.

Millions of people in the country were against the war for many reasons but what is indisputable is that authorities and reputable observers including many with long experience of the region warned Bush and Blair that it would be a disaster in fermenting growing terrorism in the Middle East and in the World beyond?]

Cast your mind back to the immediate aftermath of the bomb attacks in London on July 7 last year.  Many people drew the obvious inference: that our involvement in Iraq had increased the likelihood of such an attack.

NOT SO – said Tony Blair and the then Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw.  They repeatedly denied that the war had made us more vulnerable, pointing out that other Al Qaeda attacks, such as the destruction of the World Trade Centre

, had preceded the invasion of Iraq.

This was very slippery reasoning. No One doubted that Al Qaeda was already something of a threat.  The argument was only that the war in Iraq, far from diminishing the danger, had exacerbated it. 

WE WERE MORE AT RISK-NOT LESS

Iraq has become the cockpit of terrorism. The London bombings were, after all, the FIRST Al Qaeda-inspired attack on the British mainland.

[One point which has not seen clearly the light of day is that Britain has always had a reputation of centuries of giving a home to dissidents from the four corners of the world. World history is full of new regimes coming into being  many on the continent of Europe by many who made our country their second home.  It has always been understood that these refuges to use an underrated term were accommodated provided they did not commit terrorist outrages at home and abroad.   Unfortunately in Tony Blair’s Human Right’s Britain and with our Intelligence Services taking their eye off the ball and Blair’s disastrous adventure in Iraq and now Afghanistan many dangerous insurgents were allowed to remain and a number of these though known to British Intelligence  after training in Pakistan and training camps in our country found their way to America and the 9/11 World Trade Centre atrocity.  Later as we all know a number of the homebred terrorists also escaped the intelligence net with the consequence of the July 7 bombings in London.

Al Qaeda before Iraq looked on Britain as useful neutral territory and even after 9/11 because of Tony Blair’s  Human Right’s Act could still operate here –it was the war on Iraq that finally gave the impetus to Islamic Fundamentalist attack on our mainland.]

It is very difficult to imagine there will not be more.

President Bush is perhaps the chief villain of the piece. It was he who first declared the ‘War on Terror’. The invasion of Iraq was partly justified on wholly mendacious grounds that Al Qaeda or its affiliates had some presence there.

THEY DID NOT.

Iraq was country that posed very little, if any, danger to America or the West.

As a result of the war, it now presents a considerable threat – and we have the word of America’s entire intelligence community FOR IT.

Mr Bush is beyond our control. The American people will have to decide how to respond to being misled.  BUT Blair is still our Prime Minister. Almost single-handedly he took us to a WAR in IRAQ, despite the reservations of many in the CABINET and his PARTY that was not in Britain’s interests by the wildest stretch of the imagination.  

TWO DOSSIERS FULL OF LIES AND MISREPRESENTATIONS WERE PUBLISHED IN ORDER TO CONVINCE US OTHERWISE.

[What? we have to ask is WHY the IMPEACHMENT of TONY BLAIR has stalled in OUR HOUSE OF COMMONS? –Until that happens our ONCE GOOD REPUTATION cannot be RESTORED and in the meantime GREAT ISSUES NEEDING our ATTENTION are SHELVED until the BETRAYER of OUR COUNTRY is DISGRACED and PUNISHED for his GREAT CRIME?]

AND yet the same man, co-architect of a bloody and futile adventure that has made Britain a much more dangerous place, was cheered to the rafters on Tuesday –

 So much so that many moist-eyed sentimentalists marvelled that the Labour Party should be getting rid of him.  Newspapers which have recently put aside the habits of many years, and begun to criticise him, reverted to their former habits of blinkered adulation.

A few journalists – mostly in this paper – have rightly noted how Mr Bliar made a series of fantastical claims in his speech. But even if they were wild and excessive, I am prepared to admit that over the past nine years, some hospitals and a few schools have got better.  The Government’s promotion of dept-relief probably has preserved some lives in Africa, though it has done nothing to save them in Darfur or Zimbabwe.

Mr Blair’s portrayal of himself as a friend of the military was pretty ludicrous, given the cutbacks and economies that have been applied while Britain has been taking on even greater responsibilities.  All the same, I acknowledge that Mr Blair genuinely admires our Armed Forces, even if he has done little to help them.

[We can understand that Tony Blair should ADMIRE our Armed Forces –the dictionary meaning:

‘to have a high opinion of: to wonder at.’    

What we have to ask is how it is possible for Tony Blair to mention the word knowing what destruction he has done to the proud traditions of the British Army and many of its historic regiments in order that his plans for his

EU. Fantasy Army can take shape by drawing off valuable resources needed desperately in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For a Prime Minister to say that he ADMIRES the Armed Forces is one thing but to ‘rub it in’ at such a time is an INSULT to the relatives and friends who have lost loved one’s because a Prime Minister embarked on an illegal war and to compound it TO NOT SEE that those forces had before leaving the UK the best equipment available to any troops in the world. 

WE CAN’T ADMIRE BLAIR FOR LETTING DOWN OUR BRAVE TROOPS WHEREVER THEY ARE.]

What was utterly unendurable, though, was his pretence that he is a promoter of peace in the Middle East. Partly out of a misguided subservience to President |Bush, and partly he is gripped by some wild, messianic imperative to‘re-order’ (his phrase) the WORLD.

He has squandered this country’s name by engaging in a stupid and immoral [and devastating] war which, in the considered view of America’s Intelligence Community, has made us

MORE VULNERABLE TO ISLAMIC TERRORISM.

Certain sections of the Labour Party may want him to stay on, and in the wave of emotion some journalists are happy to forget what they were writing only a few weeks ago.
