Readers will not quarrel with the following description of how the EU destroys national sovereignty. The remarkable thing is that it is written by a highly active and influential Europhile - Mark Leonard of the Centre for European Reform, whose candour, we suspect, will not have impressed his allies in Whitehall and Westminster.

 

Europe’s power is easy to miss. Like an ‘invisible hand’, it operates through the shell of traditional political structures. The British House of Commons, British law courts, and British civil servants are still here, but THEY HAVE ALL BECOME AGENTS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION implementing European Law. This is no accident. By creating common standards that are implemented through national institutions, Europe can take over countries without necessarily becoming a target for hostility.

Hans Martin Bury, the German Minister for Europe, said in a debate in the bundestag on 24^th February 2005 that:

 

“This Constitution is, in spite of all justified calls for further regulations, a milestone. Yes, it is more than that, I think, the EU Constitution is the Birth Certificate of the United States of Europe.” (Source Die Welt, 24^th February, 2005.

 

 

[So that is all right then-we don’t think so. But at least they are frank about it in the Bundestag and they are welcome to it - but without Britain-thank you very much!]
