MY GUILT at betraying OUR VALUES
by
Allison Pearson
[Daily Mail-Wednesday, January 31,
2007]
AS A REPORT claims that
MULTICULTURALISM has helped to alienate young Muslims from British
society. It's time to own up and take my share of the blame.
Reader, I was one of the willing
foot-soldiers of multiculturalism. During teacher training in the early
1980s, we were encouraged to take materials into the classroom that
would offer pupils something of their own culture.
I know it seems hard to believe, but it
simply didn't occur to me to question what 'their own culture' meant for
Muslim children who had been born in a red-brick semi in West London and
had grown up watching Star Wars.
WHAT CAN I TELL YOU?
I was young-I was well-meaning and
I WAS WRONG.
One day, I read a story about a snake
from a book of traditional Asian tales to a class made up of 13-year-old
girls from Bengali and Pakistani backgrounds as well as pupils from
Afro-Caribbean and white families. I began to sense the class was
restless.
Eventually one girl put up her hand and
said in a plaintive voice:
'PLEASE MISS, we don't like that
sort of thing. WE'RE ENGLISH. We like SKATING.'
There was a nervous murmur of agreement
from the other non-white girls. I remember feeling dumb and ashamed.
What kind of idiot would force some boring story about an enchanted
snake on girls whose idea of a cultural outing was to a local skating
rink?
By giving them something from 'their
own culture' - in reality a distant landscape which meant about as much
to them as Mars - I had drawn attention to their differences.
Differences which like any normal teenagers, they were desperate to
hide.
Sadly, the doctrine of
multiculturalism which I had seen was a force for making children of
immigrants feel less, not more at home, prevailed. Small wonder, then,
that research by the Policy Exchange think-tank reveals that young
Muslims are now more likely to be drawn to radical Islam than their
parents. A shocking 37 per cent of 16 to 24-year-oldas would prefer to
live under
Sharia Law.
Anger and understandable distress over the war in Iraq
has played its part in forcing a wedge between some Muslims and
mainstream society. But the foolish doctrine 'of celebrating
differences' has helped to create a dangerous sense of alienation.
I cheered at David Cameron's brave speech in Birmingham
on Monday challenging
MULTICULTURALISM
-He also pointed out, harping on about differences has
removed 'incentives for people to participate fully in our national
life.'
[We find it hard to give any special thanks to Dave
when one remembers the others such a Trevor Phillips of the CRE and the
Archbishop of York and others who in the past made plain the great
damage which had been and was still doing to prevent cohesion in our
populations throughout the country. David Cameron saw the path prepared
before him it held no perils and was strewn with many votes - he hoped.
No! we do not
applaud him who as the supposed leader of Her Majesty's Opposition has
allowed the Government to get away with CONSPIRACY, MURDER and TREASON.]
To continue:
I ask you, in what other country would an outfit like
Tower hamlets Council be allowed to waste £1million giving 5,000
children after-school classes in Bengali? While you're at it, why
not lock them in a ghetto and throw away the key?
In Australia, ALL immigrants have to take English
lessons. Anyone who doesn't graduate speaking fluent,Oz is in for a
grilling MATE! My sister taught English there and she said the
students were incredibly enthusiastic.
PEOPLE WANT TO BELONG.
The impulse to make yourself acceptable
is as instinctive as the need to keep children safe.
IT WAS MULTICULTURALISM THAT
DISTORTED NATURAL HUMAN INSTINCT.
David Cameron says we must focus not on
what divides us, but on what brings us together. It sounds corny, but he
is spot on.
We need to make a knowledge of
English compulsory
We need to show young Muslims why they
would not enjoy living under Sharia law any more than the rest of us.
[We would add that in a country which
allows the guilty of the most grievous crimes to escape their true
punishment and with prisons more like 5 star hotels rather than places
of punishment and with open-prisons which are certainly described
correctly different to the name Conservative Party it is no wonder that
the Muslims wish for more fitting punishment as so do the tens of
millions of victims of crime over the past ten years in Blairland.
A majority of people would vote
for the return of the death penalty tomorrow as one thing they should be
able to get enough of is rope and we all know what we would like to do
to those who took us into a illegal war and who are ready to sell our
country into a United States of Europe a totalitarian police state under
a corpus juris continental system of law ( alien to our Rule of
Law with none above the law) and wisely rejected by a King of England
over 800 years ago.]
What I was telling those girls in that
classroom more than 20 years ago was:
'Hey, here's a colourful story from
your part of the world!'
I will always be grateful one of
them found the courage to speak up. She was ENGLISH, thank you very
much. I hope she still enjoys ice skating. I hope her daughter and sons
feel ENGLISH. And I hope they believe MY HOME is THEIR HOME, too.
