THE LITTLE GIRL turned her nose up in disgust at some minced meat that had been boiled up for the dog. ‘I’d rather die than eat that’ she exclaimed.

Young lady, don’t ever let me hear you say something like that again, ‘the normally easy going old man barked, as if he was back on the parade ground.

‘Where I have been, that would be a feast for my men’

Eight-year-old Stephanie Summers was shaken. She was not to know the starvation her grandfather had seen and endured as a prisoner of the Japanese in World War 11 for three- and -a-half years.

How could anyone of her generation understand what men like him had been through - the privation that left them living skeletons; the hard labour; the disease; the beatings; the sight of comrades dying; the constant threat of their own death at the hands of the sadistic guards.

At her age, too, she was probably unaware that her grandfather was one of the bravest heroes f the conflict.

Lt-Col Sir Phillip Toosey was the senior British officer in ONE of the notorious PoW camps whose inmates were forced at bayonet point to build the so-call ‘Death Railway’ from what is now Thailand to Burma.

Tens of thousands died on this brutal project, carving a railway line through dense jungle and over mountains.

In Tamarkan, his camp on the banks of the Kwai River, Toosey’s task was to build two bridges, and part of this saga was taken by filmmakers after the war and recreated in the famous David Lean film, starring Alex Guinness,

The Bridge On the River Kwai.

But the film - in which a caricature of a stiff-upper -lip British officer becomes so obsessed with getting the bridge completed that his actions verge on the traitorous - was a travesty of what really happened.

Far from being a collaborator like the film’s bone-headed Col Nicholson, Toosey was famous for the skilled way he dealt with the ‘Nips’.

The survival of his men was his only objective. Sometimes that meant appearing to co-operate with his captors. At other times he would face them down, risking his own life in the process.

The price he paid was enormous, as a revealing new biography by his granddaughter Julie Summers - sister of the shouted-at Stephanie - shows.

To the outside world Toosey was ‘The Brig’ or ‘The Captain’, a formidable figure. Only the family would ever see the terrible scars his ordeal left on him, body and soul. The heart disease that would eventually kill him was the result of year upon year of eating virtually nothing but rice, and little enough of that.

When his captivity ended, he weighed just eight stones. A lack of protein had weakened his heart valves - he was suffering from what the doctors came to call ‘bamboo heart’ because it was common in Far-East PoWs like him.

His mind was troubled, too. He would dream he was trapped in the corner of a room by huge black panthers with enormous teeth and yellow eyes and would wake up screaming. The nightmares faded over the years - to return with a vengeance when one of his guards tracked him down.

They spoke on the telephone; the Japanese man was full of regrets and respect.

He wanted to meet.

Toosey politely declined his offer. Just the sound of the man’s voice had brought back memories.

As a guard, the man had tied prisoners to a wooden cross by their wrists and weighed their hands down with buckets of sand for twelve hours at a time.

That night the panthers [again] returned.

In the private memoir he once tried to write for his family, perhaps in an attempt to tame the wild beasts in his mind, he recalled a comrade ‘so thin he could be lifted easily on one arm’.

‘His hair was full of maggots; his clothing just ragged shorts soaked with dysentery excreta. He was too weak to brush the flies off his face.’

Scenes of misery like that would live in his memory forever. What is even more remarkable about TOOSEY is that he could have avoided all this. He need not have been a prisoner at all.

With Singapore on the verge of surrender in 1941, he was selected by the Army to be ferried away with a handful of others whose leadership qualities were considered too valuable to be wasted in captivity.

He refused the order, insisting it was his duty to stay with his men.

Taking charge at Tamarkan, he knew their survival depended on maintaining discipline. Huts had to be properly built, latrines dug and properly serviced, dysentery fought and order kept in the face of violence and chaos.

HIS JOB was to stand between the men and their ‘sadistic’ semi-civilised and stupid’ captors, to avoid confrontation when he could and to be defiant when it was necessary.

He manoeuvred and he negotiated, he cajoled and he pleaded. But, above all, he demanded respect.

He always took care to dress smartly. He might take off his shirt under the fierce tropical heat but he ensured his shorts were clean, his socks pulled up, his shoes cleaned.

He carried a swagger stick at all times, which gave him the air of authority with the guards. He never let his standards nor those of his men slip.

As they marched back to camp at the end of an exhausting day’s work on the river, he’d shout

‘Right, lads bags of swank’

and they would put their shovels over their shoulders, straighten their backs and march like soldiers rather than prisoners.

Then he would salute the Japanese with a half smile on his face while the prisoners would sing out ‘You bastards’ at the top of their voices. It was great for morale.

A minority would accuse Toosey of being ‘Jap -happy’ but his dilemma was the same one faced by every Allied officer commanding prisoners in the Far East.

The Japanese were going to build the railway whatever, over dead bodies if necessary, and empty gestures or citing the Geneva Convention would not serve the men’s chances of survival.

Whether we liked it or not, the work had to be done’ he explained later.

But that did not mean going out of their way to help. Toosey was adamant that - unlike Alec Guinness’s Col Nicholson in the film- everything was done to slow down the work on the bridges:

‘We did as little as we could and were as bloody minded as possible.’

Sabotage was subtle. White ants were collected and put into parts of the wooden bridge to chew away at it from the inside. Concrete was poorly mixed in the hope that it would crumble.

One of Toosey, s main aims was to try to stop the random beatings dished out to his men, and he took it on himself to challenge and complain about such mistreatment. As a result he took plenty of beatings himself.

He was no saint and he wondered whether he could take any more. In private tapes he made later about his experiences, he confessed:

‘I didn’t like being kicked up the a* *e or having my head split open with a bamboo cane.’

‘Sometimes I said:

‘I really cannot go and get beaten up again.’ But then I thought:

‘They [the men] rely on you. You must go.’

And time and again he did, even offering himself to be shot if necessary. On one occasion he covered up the escape of six prisoners as long as he could and for this he was punished by being made to stand to attention outside the guardroom in the full tropical heat for a whole day.

In return for resolutely defending his men he demanded the absolute loyalty. Selfish behaviour would not be tolerated.

When he caught a private stealing a blanket from a dying man to sell for food, he told him if he ever stepped out of line again:

‘I’ll starve you to death’

‘Now you are going to be beaten up by two sergeant-majors and if you dare to make trouble or report me after the war, you will suffer more than I will.’

Such iron discipline was also imposed on the camp to stave off disease. New latrines were dug before the old ones overflowed, refuse properly disposed of, flies swatted and beards banned because they encouraged lice.

The results were remarkable.

When the two Kwai bridges were completed on April 1942, only nine men had died out of a camp of 2600.

Because of this, when the men were marched further into the jungle to work on other sections of the railway, he stayed behind to organise Tamarkan as a hospital.

Up the line, casualties from cholera. Malnutrition, exhaustion and brutality multiplied among Allied PoWs and 150,000 Asian slave labourers.

The lucky ones were sent back into Toosey’s care, arriving in their hundreds every day. Often they were just dumped from lorries into paddy fields near the camp, streaks of misery, travesties of the strong young men they had once been.

Toosey met every one of them, whatever time they arrived. Usually his was the first friendly word these men had heard in months, his gentle touch the first kindness.

And then, as the war neared its end there was a fresh horror. Allied planes raided the railway and the bridges and stray bombs hit the hospital camp. Prevented by their guards from taking shelter, 76 prisoners died in one single incident and 250 were injured.

Thirty years later, as he recounted this, his voice broke with the pain of the memory.

‘Why us? Had we suffered and survived only to be killed by our own side?’

That was the worst night of all. Rarely for him, he lost his composure when a callous Japanese guard tried to hurry along the burying of the dead.

‘I told him in plain, bold English to ‘f*** off. Which he did.’

The soldier who returned home to England in November 1945 was a stranger. Of his three children, only his eldest, Patrick, recognised him.

Ten -year-old Gillian backed away when her father hugged her. For years, she could barely talk to him. ‘How sad that must have been for him.’ she said later.

There was another disappointment the following year when he was demobbed. A ‘grateful government’, as he noted sarcastically demoted him from lieutenant colonel to major and cut his gratuity payment accordingly.

He was hurt by that - ‘so petty when one sees London full of useless staff officers who had a most comfortable war’ Luckily, his pre-war employers, Barings Bank welcomed him back with open and sympathetic arms.

But returning to civilian life was not easy. What he had been through was never discussed - neither in his family nor in those of most returning PoWs.

Toosey and his wife Alex had difficulties to overcome, and their granddaughter says it was a very long time before her grandparents found a way of living comfortably together again.

The children were slow to cotton on to their father’s ordeal. Yours later, 17-year-old Gillian cooked a meal for him in her mother’s absence. He ate it and pronounced it delicious, adding ‘though I had sworn I’d never eat rice again’.

She could have kicked herself. She had given him stew and boiled rice. For his entire captivity he had lived on little but rice three times a day. One PoW calculated that added up to more than 3,500 meals of rice.

But memories of the war had a habit of coming back anyway. The old comrades kept in touch, turning to him with their problems just as they had done back in the camp.

One anguished soul wrote to tell him of seeing camp guards everywhere, walking unnoticed among people in the street, reaching out to grab him.

Others told him of their disappointment at the country they had returned to. Some would turn up at his office and demand to see ‘The Brig’. He never turned then away. He became their mentor and their confidant.

They rallied round him when the Bridge On The River Kwai came out in 1957. Many PoWs were angered by

what they saw as a terrible slur and took umbrage.

He himself went to see it and thought it entertaining and ‘a good piece of fiction’. He knew the truth and the film bore no resemblance to who he was and what he had done. Typically, he himself said nothing. He had fought his war honourably. He did not need to defend himself.

And he seems to have felt no rancour - not over the cinema’s careless slurs on his reputation, not even towards the Japanese.

No one was more surprised about this than Sergeant-Major Teruo Saito, the Japanese second-in -command at Tarmarkan and the man with whom Toosey had most of his dealings.

They came face to face shortly after the war, in Bangkok, where Saito was being investigated for possible war crimes. Toosey considered Saito a disciplinarian lacking compassion, but generally fair. He not only cleared him, but also shook his hand.

Forty years later, Saito recalled his delight at that magnanimous gesture.

, Only the day before you were my prisoner, but you exchanged friendly words with me and I discovered what a great man you were. Even after winning you were not arrogant or proud.

Toosey may not have been able to forget but it seems he could forgive. His unending compassion was the real bridge over the River Kwai.

Elections in the British One Party State

If you vote Conservative, Labour, Lib-Dem, UKIP or the BNP, you'll be voting for the EU dictatorship. All five party leaderships are EU controlled. That's why your vote doesn't make a difference - all these five parties have the same policies: the EU's policies.

The 17 most senior politicians in the Conservative, Lib Dem and Labour parties, including Ken Clarke, Francis Maude, Cameron, William Hague, George Osborne, Nick Clegg, Brown, David and Ed Milliband, Ed Balls, Peter Mandleson are Bilderbergers, the 140 strong band of ultra senior Freemasons who are bribed by the EU to build the EU dictatorship.

No Bilderberger, Freemason or Common Purpose graduate should ever be allowed to hold public office.

UKIP and the BNP are honey traps to neutralise activists: UKIP is riddled with Freemasons and Common Purpose like a cancer, and the BNP controlled by the Edgar Griffin (father) and son Nick Freemasonry family. The 350,000 freemasons and the 40,000 strong Common Purpose Organisation are the (mostly unknowing) foot soldiers of the EU in Britain. (Which makes the BNP the easiest party to clean up - get rid of the Griffins, and put in a real anti-EU leadership.)

For more details go to :http://eutruth.org.uk

IF YOU ARE A MEMBER OF

UKIP

 OR

INTEND TO JOIN THEM TAKE NOTE OF THE MESSAGE ABOVE

THE EDP HAS BEEN CRITICAL OF THE MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP OF THE UKIP FOR SOME TIME NOW AS IS SHOWN IN A NUMBER OF BULLETINS  OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS WHERE WE HAVE CRITICISED THEIR LACK LUSTRE PERFORMANCE AS THEY FAILED TO MOTIVATE THEIR MEMBERSHIP TO A MORE DETERMINED CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE CAMPAIGN WHICH WOULD HAVE MADE THE GOVERNMENTS TREMBLE BUT THEY HAD NO WORRY BECAUSE THEY HAD THEIR OWN PERSONS IN CHARGE AT THE TOP OF THE ORGANISATION.  THIS FIGHTING SPIRIT HAS BEEN LACKING AND WE CAN CONFIRM THIS OURSELVES BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT WHEN A MARCH WAS CANCELLED - AND WATCH THE FARCE WHEN CANDLES WERE HELD AND THOUSANDS OF LETTERS SENT TO MPS WHO KNEW WHERE TO DISPOSES OF THEM -AND ALL TO NO AVAIL.  IF YOU ARE A MEMBER OF UKIP YOU HAVE BEEN BETRAYED BY YOUR OWN LEADERSHIP SOME APPEAR ON THE ALEX JONES SHOW WHICH HAS BEEN UNDER CLOSE SPOTLIGHT RECENTLY AS BEING CLOSE TO AN ISRAELI SECURITY FIRM DETAILS ON OUR WEBSITE .    IRONICALLY IT WAS A CHANCE LOOK ON THE INTERNET A FEW YEARS AGO  TO COME UPON THAT SITE WHICH OPENED OUR MIND TO THE ILLUMINATI.   THOUGH WE HAVE SOME DETAILS OF THE BILDERBERGERS ON OUR SITE  A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO WE FAILED TO DO MORE RESEARCH- WE ALL HAVE TO LEARN.  THE FAILURE OF UKIP WE HAVE SUSPECTED  FOR MANY YEARS   THAT MANY AT THE TOP OF THEIR ORGANISATION MIGHT BE UNDERCOVER MEMBERS OF THE ILLUMINATI.  IT IS A FAVOURITE TRICK OF THEIRS TO SUPPORT ANY PARTY OR ORGANISATION AT THE OUTSET WHATEVER ITS POLICY AS IT ALLOWS THEM TO PUT THEIR OWN PEOPLE IN TO CONTROL ITS POLICES AS THEY BEHIND THE SCENES SUPPLY THE VITAL FINANCIAL SUPPORT.

Our intention is not to benefit from this disaster as since the 1999 European Election we have NOT! accepted a DONATION! from ANYONE! and we closed membership also because we did not wish to split the vote for UKIP but have stated in the past that we would contest another election if it was ever necessary to enter into the affray again and with the reputation of UKIP under scrutiny we will keep our options OPEN!   As we mentioned some time ago we have been almost two decades on the campaign trail to free our once FREE INDEPENDENT NATION STATE of ENGLAND from the SATANIC EU and those who have for centuries have planned for an EVIL ONE-WORLD CORPORATION/GOVERNMENT and EXTERMINATE! at least 5 BILLION of the WORLD'S POPULATION and therefore if we are right about those mentioned above they are not only TRAITORS to their COUNTRY but also a THREAT to WORLD PEACE.   However, of late, matters have NOT! been going well for the ILLUMINATI as you will observe BELOW.
