TONY BLAIR has turned BRITAIN into a land where we are all PRISONERS. * From a passionate Labour supporter: A DAMNING VERDICT ON THE PM'S ASSAULT ON PERSONAL FREEDOM by Chris Atkins [Daily Mail-Wednesday, June 13,2007]
EVEN George Orwell would be shocked. He described the sinister machinations of a totalitarian police state in his novel, 1984, and laid bare the danger of eroding our basic civil liberties, including the OF SPEECH and RIGHT of PRIVACY Although he famously coined the phrase 'Big Brother is Watching you' -even Orwell cannot have foreseen just how prescient those words would prove to be.
TODAY, in Tony Blair's Britain - which I naively voted into power ten years ago - we have witnessed a breath-taking erosion of CIVIL LIBERTIES. The truth is we are fast becoming an Orwellian State -our every movement watched, our behaviour watched, our behaviour monitored, and our FREEDOM CURTAILED. Between May 1997 and August 2006, New Labour created 3,023 new criminal offences -taking in everything from a law against Polish potatoes (the polish Potatoes order 2004) to one which made the creation of a nuclear explosion in Britain officially illegal.
Watched Then there has been the incredible number of CCTV cameras - a total of 4,200,000 - more than the rest of Europe put together. And , yesterday , we learnt that the GOVERNMENT -has agreed to let the EU have automatic access to the databases of DNA (containing samples of people's hair, sperm or fingernails) in order to help track down criminals, even though many thousands of those on record are totally innocent.
HOW DID ALL THIS HAPPEN? To try and answer these questions, I have made a FILM 'Talking Liberties.' -about the attack on our I uncovered a disturbing roll of ancient basic rights which have been systematically destroyed in the self-serving climate of fear this GOVERNMENT -has perpetuated since the 9/11 ATTACK
FIRST-there was the Act which banned the age-old right of protest within a half-mile of PARLIAMENT -without special police authorisation. And -who can forget Walter Wolfgang, the pensioner who was dragged out of the Labour Party Conference for daring to heckle the [JACK STRAW] He was detained under the Terrorism Act 2000, which gives the police unprecedented STOP and SEARCH POWERS. In 2005 alone, this law was used to stop 35,000 people - none of whom were a TERRORIST
But this is only the thin edge of the wedge-our civil liberties enshrined in -are being whittled away
There has been an unprecedented shift of power from the INDIVIDUAL -towards the STATE -but now this power is being used not to defeat terrorism, but to keep tabs on ordinary citizens. As well as a raft of repressive anti-terror legislation, there are the more insidious infringements of our
FREEDOM and PRIVACY
[We have been giving this warning for over ten years but to no avail as the GOVERNMENT were aware of our national characteristic to be laid back and anyway hadn't it already been confirmed at the outset by the new Prime Minister Tony Blair that he was a 'Servant of the People' The problem has been that even when the truth began to emerge the so-called HER MAJESTY'S OPPOSITION -hardly raised a murmur. And the people in the main just didn't want to know. The failure of the Eurosceptic parties and organisations to form an umbrella movement to act as one in order to get millions of protestors on the London streets in the early days to stop the changes DEAD -has brought us in June 2007 to learn the massive loss of our FREEDOM One has only to visit the INTERNET -to see the bristling growing numbers of websites over the past few years who are concerned about the threat to our WE now hear that a GOVERNMENT report on -has concluded that almost 70% of people are alarmed at the significant increase in numbers and the massive problems that have been revealed. It is typical of NEW LABOUR to wait ten years before learning that their policies have brought about (as usual) the very dangers they were warned about on a number of occasions by the Independent As we have pointed out frequently over the past ten years Tony Blair and his sofa club decide what their policies are to be (no need to let the people know -Yet!) and then do whatever is necessary to bring in conditions to enable then to say that they had to do what they did because the circumstances warranted it. An illegal war is a wonderful cover to bring in pernicious and deadly legislation to curb Whatever New Labour have touched over the past ten years you will find that in the main it has all turned out to be an absolute disaster. TOO MUCH LAW and MORE DISORDER ROAD TRANSPORT - and many other areas-with particular attention to the closure of thousands of rural POST OFFICES-POLICE STATIONS. With LOCAL HOSPITALS closed down which means the growing numbers of the elderly and infirm in our country have a longer distance to travel for treatment or visitation. We now hear in June 2007 that W H Smith are to be offered the job of opening Post Offices in their stores. What a money spinner this will be for the GOVERNMENT -as they asset strip the large number of Post Office properties.' All this GOVERNMENT needs is a roulette wheel to see what number comes up so that it can implement the policy that comes under that number. If all goes wrong -and it usually does -what does it matter as they have over £900,000,000,000 -in their bank. They close down our last Military Hospital without any thought for the needs of the brave soldiers-sailors and airmen who are desperately in need for to be treated by their own with their own -and not as a last thought as troublemakers who must be showed who is BOSS. Might it be possible for the countless millionaires in BUSINESS and COMMERCE to subscribe to a fund to establish a Military Hospital. In the Victorian era particularly the wealthy concerned themselves with building hospitals and schools. Surely there are still many wealthy families who in their family tree have been members of the Armed Forces. A National Appeal could also be considered. Once the project got under way the Government of the day would be under great pressure to contribute. The attitude of the present Government is the attitude of an unfeeling and ungrateful employer -but that is what happens when political correctness and a constant search to be as ruthless as the much mentioned vultures of the private equity industry.
We now hear that their much praised Academies have been show to be no better than the average Comprehensive - and they are a wonderful investment for business though we now hear the gloss has been lost -what with the Donations for Honours scandal and that now other organisations-such as the Church and other Faith schools are to be involved. PFI -whatever the investment is a goldmine which will be plundered for generations to come - future generations will have to pay the compound price..
In an advanced civilisation the care of the elderly -sick and vulnerable comes directly after the adequate DEFENCE OF THE REALM The last ten years of New Labour has seen the POOR getting POORER -and the Elderly neglected with inadequate provision for FREE CARE IN THE COMMUNITY -but they can find over £5 billion for an illegal war and give back to the unaccountable -corrupt police state the EUROPEAN UNION -the hard fought for EU REBATE which our excuse for a STATESMAN -has given away. We expect the International Court of Justice at the Hague to be sending for Tony Bliar and his close advisers to explain their illegal invasion of a sovereign country which was NO THREAT TO THE UK Over the past ten years legislation has been dropping from the sky staining our society and sticking into every corner of our once free country. Those responsible are to be compared to the diving shysters in Trafalgar Square who drop their load from a high level and rarely miss their target. It will be easier to wipe the carpet of splattered filth away than to heal the great damage that has been done to OUR CONSTITUTION OUR COUNTRY OUR COMMUNITIES OUR REPUTATION IN THE WORLD And why have many of these changes being taking place -because of the 117,000 pages of Directives-Regulations and other decisions from -and of course WHITEHALL always increase the burden of the legislation further.
One has also to remember that 70% of people want either POWER BACK FROM BRUSSELS and over 60% at least Our last word must be about the expected result of medicines being available in Scotland which are not available on the NHS in England and Wales. This is another case where the Government has decided on Devolution for Scotland and Wales but rejected it for England. If that had been granted and with it the acceptance of the quasifederal arrangement for full independence of the three nation states then each state would be free to decide what its citizens should be offered. The present half-way house will always cause great difficulties which is the nature of the case. As many expect that Scotland will be fully independent within five years. Wales has only recently had it powers increased and it too will proceed to independence. An account of the Devolution process by one of the foremost experts on the subject Professor Bogdanor in his book DEVOLUTION IN THE UNITED KINGDOM OUP-2001 We found that the question of ENGLISH devolution was looked at purely in a EU prospective which raised so many obstacles which out of the EU would disappear. The comparisons between different countries in the EU even suggested that an independent Scotland would not be permitted by the EU to separate itself from being represented by what was left of Britain-though its representatives would be welcome in Brussels. A mention was made of the Basque situation in Spain. For an Englishman we found that a glance at the face of the book showed all the flags of the United Kingdom except the ENGLISH FLAG -even the Shinn Fein emblem was proudly placed under the SCOTTISH FLAG But after reading the book it became apparent why this was so. Only out of a EU prospective would the realisation of an -provide a more productive research as to the reality of such a consideration. All the trend of the book was the situation in the EU and in particular the REGIONS OF ENGLAND There was the constant theme that the ENGLISH where not interested in nationhood and also neither were they particularly interested in giving up their two tiers of local government for a regionalisation policy. The attempt by the government to payroll the YES! vote in the North East came a cropper even though Big Business -the BBC North East and the EU Elite in the area and the large government additional financial support which was provided. We appreciate that professor Bogdanor's book was published in 2001 and the political landscape has changed quite dramatically over the past few years. We now have a Scottish SNP First Minister who has no intention of not achieving Independence for his country within the next five years. The English people after being slumbering for many years has now realised that what Scotland can achieve so can We are aware that Professor Bogdanor 's comments are sought for -as he is a frequent speaker at a number of venues around the country. Possibly he has already adjusted his research in line with the latest movements of political opinion. We shall look forward to hearing his latest assessment of the

[Over the past ten years we have constantly warned of the dangers of leaving it up to politicians to protect YOUR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION and MOVEMENT -and the importance of a change to the electoral system to PR-PRO PORTIONAL REPRESENTATION -but the call to arms was ignored and is still being ignored and everyone of us can now see displayed before our eyes the very instruments of our SLAVERY.]
And , all the time, there are those CCTV cameras - 20 per cent of the global; total, even though Britain only has 0.2 per cent of the world's population. New Labour has an absolute obsession with these devices. Soon, more sophisticated cameras will be able to recognise your face and the information matched to one of the NATIONAL DATABASES. All cars will eventually be fitted with a GPS chip, officially to simplify road tax payments but they will also allow government agencies to track every vehicle in the country. [WELL! HAVE YOU ALL WOKEN UP -NOW!] There are, of course, more alarming implications to being constantly monitored - as ORWELL understood. Soon, we will be living in an OPEN - AIR PRISON. Some may ask : WHY DOES THIS MATTER The answer is that to SURRENDER YOUR IDENTITY and PRIVACY -so comprehensively is to give up something WE WILL NEVER GET BACK [The TRUTH is that under NEW LABOUR the so -called SERVANTS have now become the MASTERS and they must be laughing all the way to the BANK with also the knowledge that the ELITE will have no need to pay TAXES or OBEY THE LAW. The nation will be divided into SLAVES and the well-paid and pampered ELITE]
Although New Labour says its mania for data-gathering is all part of its plan to protect us, there's no guarantee that future governments (who will be inheriting a national surveillance machine and the National Identity Register) won't use it to more malign means. [The ONLY PROTECTION which we would have is if PR-PRO-PORTIONAL REPRESENTATION was put in place and then ALL points of opinion on matters of FREEDOM and PRIVACY as we can see before our eyes that Parliament has been powerless to stop the move to a Big Brother state. Only PR would enable these important matters to be freely discussed in what would be more so - 'THE PEOPLES' HOUSE of COMMONS.] Totalitarian regimes have, after all , always collected information on their citizens. HITLER pioneered the use of ID CARDS -as a means of repression. The Belgians left Rwanda with a bloody legacy by implementing an ID card system which divided the population into Hutu and Tutsi. Privacy When the 1994 genocide began, these cards proved a device for horrific ethnic cleansing [in Rwanda], with 1,000,000 -people dying in 100 days The Stasi secret police in Soviet East Germany kept millions of files in order to keep track of EVERYONE -in the country. Of course these examples are the extremes -but basic liberties such as FREE SPEECH -have been hard-won over centuries and history shows that we should not allow them to be brushed aside.
This shift away from INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM towards STATE POWER has happened slowly, and almost without us noticing. Like so many others, I was proud to put a cross against the box next to NEW LABOUR -in 1997 -as a first-time voter. But now I have been shocked at the vast swathe of NEW LAWS which have been introduced, most of them in response to TERRORISM [Which Tony Blair's illegal war in Iraq gave its impetus.] We are told that this is all for the good - these laws, and the surveillance cameras and ID cards will stop terrorists. IS THAT THE CASE? SADLY NOT The London bombers carried ID cards and were observed on CCTV -of course it did not stop them committing their terrible crime. Intelligence experts say that most information leading to genuine breakthroughs come from informants, not through random tracking or surveillance of the GENERAL POPULATION.
Undermine In any case LIBERTY and SECURITY aren't balanced on some delicate equilibrium, as John Reid, the Home Secretary, and Tony Blair would have us believe. History has shown us that it is precisely when we undermine PEOPLE'S RIGHTS -that they mobilise towards radical groups. After all, one of the greatest recruiters for the IRA in Northern Ireland was the policy of INTERNMENT -under which people were imprisoned without trial. HAVE WE LEARNT NOTHING FROM THE PAST? STOP and SEARCH -laws applied to Britain's Muslim communities will simply polarise those groups. Instead, we need them to help protect the country from terrorism. [Only the withdrawal our Armed Forces from Iraq and Afghanistan will show to the Muslim communities that we are a lawful nation and that alone will gradually get those true fellow citizens on side and active to prove their commitment to their adopted country.] It's not all DOOM and GLOOM -as I hope my film reflects. The sheer absurdity of the bewildering array of idiotic new laws has given us abundance of bizarre and hilarious situations for our DOCUMENTARY But , behind this dark comedy is something more disturbing. faced with the threat of terrorism, the GOVERNMENT -has told us THAT WE MUST LAY DOWN OUR FREEDOMS FOR OUR LIVES. Perhaps it has forgotten the millions of people from the past generations who have LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES
I think we owe it to those people to turn the tide [LEADING INTO A POLICE STATE]
