Blair can spend Unlimited cash on EU Constitution ‘YES’ Vote.

 

[Well! We have been here before on many occasions with that extra lolly which Edward Heath and every Prime Minister over the last 32 years who had a Treaty Too Far to put before the People with the last crass attempt at the recent ‘YES’ vote in the Northeast which for once showed the Game is up when the ‘NO’ vote thrashed them in spite of the Governments extra injection of funds –YOUR MONEY-over the past few years in order to get their way.]

 

 

In the Daily Mail on 26^th November 2004 an article by their reporter Jane Merrick outlines a further attempt by the Government to play foul once again to further prove their unsuitableness to be part of a once free Democracy.

Tony Blair can plough an unlimited amount of taxpayers’ money into campaigning for the ‘YES’ vote in the Referendum on the New European Constitution, it emerged yesterday.

 

An extraordinary loophole means that the Government has an unfair advantage over those opposed to the [New European] Constitution.

 

[Well I don’t think Mr Putin would be happy to know that the British Government which has complained of Election Fraud in the Ukraine should be able to use such undemocratic means to secure their aims at home.]  

 

Both sides in the campaign are allowed to spend up to £5 million in the ten-week period before polling day.  The money includes a £600,000 grant from the Electoral Commission.

 

And either side can spend as much as it wants between now and the ten week ‘Referendum Period’, which will not be before spring 2006.

 

But in addition to these rules, electoral law allows the Government to use public money [YOUR MONEY] to promote its cause until 28 days before the Referendum.

 

Under the terms of the political Parties, Elections and Referendum Act, the Government must then stay within the spending limits in the interests of neutrality.

 

However the bias means that the public will be flooded with leaflets from the ‘YES’ campaign for six weeks, while receiving relatively little from the ‘NO’ side.

 

Sam Younger, chairman of the Electoral Commission yesterday called for a ban on ministers using taxpayers’ money.

 

In a speech to the Constitution Unit seminar in London, he said:

 

‘It seemed to us that it was wrong for the Government to be spending public money from the point at which other organisations were restricted.’

 

Mr Younger also revealed he wrote to Local Government Minister Nick Raynsford before the Referendum on a North East Regional Assembly earlier this month to complain at bias.

 

Shadow Foreign Minister Graham Brady said:  ‘It is typical of this Government that they will misuse public money to change public money.’

 

[For the Conservative Party to make such a statement after the shenanigans in their party in the past to use the same methods –they have short memories.  Which party in 1975 used the same tactics-Conservative and at every other time since when they needed to pass further treaties to ensnare us further into the EU. What would have been important to hear was their party’s intention to change the Electoral Law to outlaw the practice as no doubt the Chairman of the Electoral Commission Sam Younger would agree.]   

A Government spokesman yesterday said the rules covering Referendums were ‘unworkable’

In a humiliating U-turn earlier this year, Mr Blair decided to hold a Referendum following the Daily Mail’s campaign for voters to have a say over key powers being given up to Brussels.

In a poll of 1.7 million readers more than a year ago, nine out of ten voted in favour of a Referendum.
