In the wake of the London bombings of 7th July many commentators suggested that the underlying aim of the bombers was to destroy our way of life and even our sense of national identity.

In this vein, a leader in the Daily Telegraph reflected on the essential components of our identity. Statutory patriotism, it rightly averred was un-British, but it was possible to identify the non-negotiable components of British-ness and went on to list them.

Public Reaction

Although we do know what the public reaction will be to further terrorist attacks on London or other British cities, thus far there appears little reason to suppose that Islamic terrorists will succeed in destroying the essential characteristics of being British.

BUT

When reflecting on the Daily Telegraph list it is impossible not to observe that where the terrorist has so far failed - others have met with an astonishing measure of success.

Eurofacts readers will have no difficulty in guessing the primary source from which the threat comes.

Of the ten “essential components” of national identity at least six have been seriously eroded through Britain’s membership of the EU

Stressing the fundamental importance of one such component - the sovereignty of the Crown in Parliament - the Daily Telegraph declared:

“ The Lords. The Commons and the Monarch constitute the Supreme authority in the land. There is no appeal to any higher jurisdiction spiritual or temporal.”

THE REALITY is that 60 per cent of our LAWS originate in Brussels, that British law is subordinate to European Law, and where disputes occur there is the most certainly the right of appeal to higher authority -to the European Court of Justice.

Already marginalized, the Monarchy is on its way to obsolescence.

Like Kenneth Clarke, the Daily Telegraph does not appear to have read the Maastricht Treaty.[1992]

Acknowledging the centrality of the RULE OF LAW to the British way of life the Daily Telegraph asserts:

“No one is above the Law - not even in Government.”

[I don’t believe it -they can’t be wrong twice in a row -surely not? - the answer is YES!]

Well, actually an increasing number of senior EU officials enjoy a remarkable array of legal immunities - not to mention a formidable list of privileges. To such an extent that even one euro-phile Lib Dem peer - Lord Wallace of Saltaire -has warned of a future public backlash. [Details on our bulletin board]

State Coercion

When it comes to Individual Liberty the Daily Telegraph is surely right to say that there should be a presumption always and everywhere against State coercion and that eccentricity should be tolerated to the point of lunacy.

There should be a presumption but as a consequence of EU membership this can no longer be taken for granted:

The major threats to Individual Liberty in the form of State coercion including the European Arrest Warrant, identity cards, and mandatory data retention requirement on service providers have originated in Brussels where enthusiasm

for harmonisation greatly exceeds a liking for eccentricity.

[Play suspended because of lack of light -or was it insight?

We say the Daily Telegraph must try and do better in the future]

To continue:

Respect for British Institutions in which British freedom and the British character are immanent is a core value, the Daily Telegraph suggests.

Whether one is talking of the Great Institutions of State or those of civil society it is difficult to think of a single one whose activities are not curtailed or diminished as the result of EU Regulations or deals struck by the Council of Ministers.

Common Values

Membership of the English Speaking World - the anglosphere in modern parlance - is undeniably central to our idea of the British place in the world, as the Daily Telegraph maintains.

BUT

as a result of EU membership, step-by-step Britain has been forced to distance itself from the countries to which it has been linked through common political values. Shared historical experience and language.

At the heart of British identity is the British character, which says the Daily Telegraph, shapes British Institutions and is in turn shaped by them.

But these days the most powerful institutions are European ones.

These are opaque, undemocratic, often corrupt and usually inefficient.

We can hardly expect them to have a beneficial impact on the evolution of the British character.

Indeed their baleful influence can already be perceived in the refusal if Ministers and Officials to take responsibility for their actions.

And, whenever convenient, to take refuge behind evasions and falsehoods.

Membership of the EU alone cannot be held responsible for this fall in Standards, but it has most certainly produced rhetoric of deception that exceeds by far the normal prevarications of political life.

The conclusion can only be that ‘Europe’ has damaged British Identity

far more effectively

and comprehensively

than the deluded young men who have strapped parcels of explosive in pursuit of a perverse and impossible dream.

[Well! without condoning the actions of the bombers it shows whatever their objectives that they are prepared to give their lives for their CAUSE. WE hope when the time comes when we finally have to make a stand that there will be many who will do what it takes to protect OUR Constitution-OUR Identity- OUR own LAWS - OUR Freedoms and Liberties with as much passion and dedication]

The task of any truly patriot political party must not be simply to defend National Identity against further erosions, but to revive and restore WHAT HAS BEEN LOST. The Restoration of Manhood should be starting point for any party seeking to renew itself.

[If this is intended to include the CON Party then there will be no hope from that quarter as they consider the matter of British Independence of no account as history over the last 32 years has witnessed their support since Rome

-Maastricht and since.

Only P.R. Proportional Representation will supply the Party, which can save OUR COUUNTRY.]

Brussels wins power to put Britons in jail

*

Daily Mail

Wednesday, September 14 -2005

Tim Shipman-Political Correspondent

BRUSSELS has won the right to intervene in British law [more particularly in ENGLISH LAW] and lay down criminal penalties to be handed down by British Courts, even if the Government [New Labour] does not agree.

The EU Commission will be able to set the punishments that apply if Britons break laws based on EU policy.

[Well! -this should wake up those millions of Britons who thought that the rejection of the New European Constitution by France and Holland would hold up any further loss of Sovereignty.]

A ruling by the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg gives Brussels power to introduce harmonised criminal law across Europe.

The Tories immediately seized on the decision as a ‘dangerous precedent’ further chipping away at National Sovereignty

[So did a CON Government sign the Maastricht Treaty in February 1992 -YES!]?

And the [New Labour] Government said it was ‘disappointed’

[We doubt it very much!]

The landmark ruling followed a test case between the Commission and 11 EU member states including Britain.

[What is so obvious from the actions of the politicians of the 11 is that they appear continually to underestimate the power lost to Brussels within the Treaties they have signed. They no doubt just shrug their shoulders and collect their attendance money and fly home with excuses.]

It focused on environmental legislation from Brussels enshrined in UK law - but the ruling will now apply to any policy area, from the single market to data protection and money laundering.

The Commission will decide whether breaking such laws is a criminal or civil offence, and what penalties should apply.

The ruling declared:

‘ The European community has the power to require the member states to lay down criminal penalties for the purpose of protecting the environment.’

Commission spokesman Martin Selmayr said in a statement:

‘Today’s judgment is an important precedent. It will allow the Commission to continue and enhance its efforts to ensure compliance with provisions of European Community law by means of criminal law.’

Shadow Foreign Secretary Liam Fox said:

‘This is a very dangerous precedent that opens the way to our legal traditions being asset stripped by the power-hungry European Union.

‘Despite all Tony Blair’s protestations, the UK is bit by bit losing control over our ability to make our own laws.

‘This is a Government that is unable to stand up to Europe [Just like the CON Government in 1992] because ultimately the Prime Minister is more concerned with appeasing our European partners than fighting for British interests.’

[Should have said:

We are sorry for signing the Maastricht Treaty in 1992 and the mess it has led us to under New Labour -but I ask you to TRUST us in the future. What a hope!]

Conservatives in the European parliament said the ruling represented a ‘worrying erosion of British sovereignty.’ [The usual underestimate one expects from a Pro-Europe Party]

Timothy Kirkhope, the Tory leader in Brussels said:

‘This is a blow to Britain’s ability to decide things for ourselves. I fear the Commission sees this as an opportunity to extend its powers and start interfering in the criminal law of member states.

[Will not someone remind him

Maastricht! - Maastricht! - Maastricht! ]

‘It’s a significant transfer of power to the Commission, sanctioned by a Court which tends towards the integrationist approach. The decision on whether or not to criminalize offences in Britain should be a matter for Britain, not the EU.’…

[Mr Kirkhope! - IT WAS A CON Party which signed the Maastricht Treaty long ago in 1992 so no more public grief until YOUR Party comes off the shelf over Europe and show the Pro-EU proletariat the exit from a once professed patriotic Conservative Party.
