It seems we are at the mercy of buffoons in blue.

 

FOLLOWING the recent troubles, I would like to write something favourable about the POLICE. I really would. But favourable material simply eludes me, though I search high and low.

 

This represents an extraordinary turnaround for someone of my generation, which the young may find difficult to appreciate.

 

There was a time, well within living memory, when the British police force was written about in the most flattering terms- finest force in the world, the envy of lesser nations, a model of public service, etc., etc. NOW we are not sure whether their antics should make us laugh or cry.

 

There seems no end to the mounting list of police blunders - the escort for the criminal activities of the Danish Embassy rioters, the inertia over Abu Hamza, new tales of indifference, which moderate Muslims encountered when their mosques were threatened by the rabid fringe.

 

Scotland Yard has now been jolted by public outrage into preparing to identify and arrest those protesters who carried placards, which incited violence.

WELL, good, BUT it is a manifest absurdity that the POLICE should first encourage criminality by providing an escort and then later prosecute those it safeguarded.

 

The image of the Danish Embassy affair, which will long linger, is the contrast between the constable threatening to arrest the outraged van driver and the obsequious helpfulness of the official escorts for those inciting crime.

 

ALAS, the instinct of the bully or the buffoon never seems far away.

We may trace some of the current rot back in 1989 when a Muslim crowd converged on Westminster demanding the death of Salman Rushdie for blasphemy in his satanic verses. (obscurity would be a better charge, but this is not a literary column.)

 

The placards and chants of that crowd, since they called for an individual’s death, were worse than this week’s. BUT the crowd was met by a police inspector who shook hands with a leading marcher and merely asked for the demonstration not to go on too long.

 

As I complained at the time, WHY were there no arrests?

 

WHY at least no official warning?

 

That act of appeasement set in train the view of Muslim extremists that they can get away with anything.

 

Another, if less dangerous, example of the buffoon element and the concern of the police with

 

Multiculturalism

-and all that mischievous word covers - is the case of Gloucestershire. There, two thirds of white applicants for vacancies, despite obvious strengths, have been automatically turned down while 100 per cent of ‘ethnic’ applicants have been invited for an interview.

 

The Deputy Chief Constable defends this as

 

‘POSITIVE ACTION’

 

Let’s hope that the law-abiding citizens of that county appreciate the need for sacrifice on the altar of

 

Multicultural correctness

 

-when they call up he police for assistance -and find that colour NOT quality, is the criterion for recruitment.

 

I suggest that householders calling for help should claim that a burglar made a racial remark in the course of his theft. Then of course, the police will turn up like lightning and probably in force.

 

HOWEVER, there is one thing about the whole issue, which nags me. Of course, in itself the Islamic outrage is ridiculous. Even Mohammed’s supposed and curious aversion to pictures (in general) is based NOT on the Koran, but on a view attributed to him by a supporter.

 

Nonetheless, we should be objective. The Muslims demanding physical retribution may be a fringe minority - to use that familiar and comforting formula.

 

The trouble is that the West is seen by them not just as blasphemers but also as invaders.

 

To the latter charge, we have no defence.

 

Moreover we are set to exacerbate matters by the preposterous and doomed dispatch of British forces to Afghanistan at the Americans behest. The Ministry of Defence envisages a three to five year deployment.

BUSH-whacked into another conflict

 

How nations can stumble into conflicts has long been a favoured theme of historians.

 

In the case of World War I, it is now accepted that important Serbian officials were indeed, complicit in the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

 

Germany took the side of a justly outraged Austria.

 

Russia allowed Serbia to drag it into mobilisation. The French mobilised in support of their treaty with Russia. Germany mobilised on a plan, which took its troops directly into Belgium.

Britain came to Belgium’s support because of an old treaty.

 

The miscalculations, the confusion, the incomprehension seems no better today.

 

We have stumbled into an East-West conflict because of weapons which did not exist in the hands of the dictator who was never the supporter of terrorism in the U.S., as was claimed.

 

And who is in charge of the clattering train?

 

WHY, George Bush!

ON POSITIVE DISCRIMINATION

A Chief Constable who used

 

‘Positive discrimination’

 

to weed out white male recruits has admitted breaking the law.

 

Colin Port, of Avon and Somerset Police, said he had ‘overstepped the mark’ by rejecting applications from 186 white men.

The Force sparked fury last November when it claimed that white males were ‘over represented’ in the ranks.

 

It argued that rejecting the men’s applications at the first stage was a legal way of bolstering the number of female and ethnic minority recruits -all of whom allowed through to at least stage two.

 

After being threatened with a tribunal by the Commission for Racial Equality and Equal Opportunities Commission, Mr Port took independent advice.

 

Yesterday, he admitted that lawyers had told him the policy ‘may have contravened sections of the Sex Discrimination Act and the Race Relations Act.’

 

 

Promising not to repeat the exercise, Mr Port said: It was not and has never been, our intention to discriminate against anyone who applies for a position with Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

‘At the time we considered that this represented an untried and untested area.’ [Fiddlesticks!]

 

‘The actions that we have taken in withdrawing the

POSITIVE ACTION

 

-have been as a result of pre-eminent counsel’s advice which essentially said we overstepped the mark.’ [So that is all right then?]

 

But critics pointed out that while Mr Port sounded contrite, he had actually achieved his goals.

[Well Mr Port should be told to go through the recruiting procedure in the correct way in order that NO applicant is discriminated against under Positive Action.

 

The present applicants who were successful will we are sure now realise that they will be looked on as having achieved their jobs at the expense of others who had been treated as they themselves would find humiliating and discriminatory.

 

Mr Port has admitted his fault and he should NOT be permitted to achieve his unlawful objective by promises of good behaviour in the future.

 

 

ALL applicants should NOW be re-interviewed for the positions, which were available, and Mr Port should be sent on a very long fact -finding mission to the USA where he will find that

 

POSITIVE DISCRIMINATION

 

is no longer popular there and has in fact caused great mischief and increased tension in the various communities which attempted to achieve what they called a racial mix -instead of employing the right man for the job irrespective of Race or Colour which is the only way to see that the community itself is protected and prospers by those it employees.

 

The individual citizen is best served by the acknowledgement that ALL job applicants have a level -playing field as only under these conditions will there be confidence on those who are appointed to serve the community.

The recruitment drive has now been completed and white males represent only 46 per cent of those given jobs.

 

White women filled 49 per cent of the 180 posts,

 

Black and ethnic minority males 4 per cent

 

Black and ethnic minority females 1 per cent

[Men from Mars have yet to be evaluated though their green appearance will no doubt be of consideration in the selection process though there will be difficulties in communication. Possibly Mr Port will be of help when he returns from his extensive and long fact-finding trip to the USA and MARS.]

[Well Mr Port has confidently out of his own mouth acknowledged his policy of Positive Action so there was no misunderstanding on his part as to his blatant injustice in manner of his recruiting drive as described above.

 

This was not a case of someone not being aware of his actions but the determination to apply his own rules come what may.

 

Those who employ the protectors of the community have a higher duty to ensure that they select the best person for the job because in the end a team is only as good as its constituent parts.

 

The rise of crime in this country is out of control and all Mr Port can think of is a way to undermine his own Force which he needs urgently to protect the members of the local Community.]

Gloucestershire Police are waiting for a verdict from the CRE and the EOC on the recruitment drive in which 109 white males were cut from the selection process.
