From
beyond the grave -Robin Cook taunts Blair on Iraq.
by
Gordon Tait and Tim Shipman
[Daily Mail-Tuesday, January 9, 2007]
IN LIFE, Robin Cook was the most
outspoken Parliamentary critic of Tony Blair's decision to
GO TO WAR IN IRAQ.
IN DEATH, he will remain the scourge of
the PRIME MINISTER for EVER.
The HEADSTONE on Mr Cook's grave
carries the LEGEND:
'I may not have succeeded in
halting the war, but I did secure the right of Parliament to decide on
war.'
The inscription was chosen by Mr Cook's
widow Gaynor and his two sons Peter 32 and Christopher 34, who were keen
to find a quote by him which summed up his career as MP and MINISTER.
Friends and former colleagues of Mr
Cook said the words were a fitting tribute to his memory as a staunch
campaigner for Parliament to have the final say over the decision to go
to war - something Mr Blair has always OPPOSED.
The quotation echoes the sentiments of
Mr Cook's electrifying resignation SPEECH in the COMMONS
-after which dozens of MPs broke with
CONVENTION to APPLAUD.
[When TRUST has been LOST in a
FIRST MINISTER then A CONVENTION is no longer sacrosanct in HIS HANDS.]
He said:
From the start of the present
crisis, I have insisted, as Leader of the House, on the right of this
place to vote on whether Britain should go to war.'
MPs eventually voted
396 to 217 against a motion which declared that
the case for war
' has not been established.'
But the CAUSE highlighted on Mr Cook's
gravestone -to hand Parliament rather than the PRIME MINISTER the FINAL
SAY over WAR and PEACE -has gathered pace since his death, to the
irritation of Mr Blair.
Both Gordon Brown and David Cameron are
publicly committed to making it happen and a House of Lords committee
last year recommended enshining a vote over the
DECLARATION OF WAR
-into Parliamentary
CONVENTION.
The gravestone was recently erected at
Grange Cemetary in Edinburgh. It describes Mr Cook as a
'Parliamentarian and Statesman, beloved
husband of Gaynor and much -missed father of Chris and Peter'
-before going into the quotation.
It is not the first time that the
former MP for Livingston has been the cause of embarrassment to the
Prime Minister, since he died of a heart attack while walking on a
Scottish mountain with Gaynor, his second wife in August 2005.
Mr Blair attracted huge criticism for
failing to cut short his summer holiday to attend the funeral for a man
who had been a front-bench colleague for 17 years.
At the service Mr Cook's friend and
fellow racing pundit John McCririck accused Mr Blair of 'petty
vindictiveness and moral failure' and said he had snubbed Mr Cook's
family and millions of Labour voters.
Before he died aged 59, the former
Foreign Secretary used his memoirs,
'Point of Departure'
-to reveal that the Prime Minister
admitted on the eve of war with Iraq that Saddam Hussein could not
assemble weapons of mass destruction within 45 minutes -the centrepiece
of the
GOVERNMENT'S CASE FOR WAR.
Friends say the quotation on his
gravestone comes from the same book and was selected after his family
trawled his speeches and writings for a
FITTING TRIBUTE.
The gravestone political statement,
unusual in a cemetery, is hard to miss.
The inscription forms the centrepiece
of a 5ft 4in plinth and headstone -just two inches shorter than Mr Cook
stood himself. His former special adviser David Clark said:
'It is a fitting testimony to what
Robin stood for.'
Another family friend said:
'When he died there was a lot of
discussion between the family and friends about how to remember him.
They wanted to find a quotation from him that summed up his contribution
to politics.
'There were several suggestions but it
was Gaynor and Robin's two sons who made the final selection. It was a
decision of the family to put a quote from Robin on the Headstone.'
Friend and fellow MP peter Kilfoyle,
said:
Robin did not think he was going to die
because he was in the full flush of his political ascendancy. he was the
only member of the Cabinet with the INTEGRITY to resign over the WAR
-and I will never forget that.
It would be a fitting way to recognise
Robin's political COURAGE in the future it was taken as read if all
decisions TO GO TO WAR
WERE TAKEN BY PARLIAMENT.'
Mr Cook was buried in Grange Cemetery
at the insistence of his wife Gaynor, who wanted somewhere close to
their Edinburgh home so that she could walk to visit him every day.
The cemetery has been full for years
and burials are normally granted only if a family member is already
interred there. But council officials allowed a part of a grass footpath
to be used for Mr Cook's imposing
EPITAPH.

So You Want Out
Of The EU
THEN WHY NOT SIGN THE
RENUNCIATION of EU CITIZENSHIP
WHY WE ASK YOUR SUPPORT
When we first saw the petition we reasoned
that it had no chance of success from No 10 but we supported it
in order to gauge the number of Britons who would publicly put
their name to a list which stated that they wished to
RENUNCIATE EU CITIZENSHIP and retain only BRITISH.-THAT
IS WHAT THIS IS ABOUT. Some might say that to hide behind a
negative premise is both cowardly and playing into the hands of
the EU FEDERALISTS. DON'T LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT- Place
your vote so ALL can see that YOU CARE. about YOUR COUNTRY and
YOUR FREEDOM.

Details from petition creator
With the signing of the Maastricht
Treaty the people of Britain were given
DUAL CITIZENSHIP
-both
EUROPEAN and BRITISH
The extra tier of citizenship was
thrust upon the people without their consent -and in many cases
knowledge.
The PEOPLE of GREAT BRITAIN should be
allowed the option of opting out of the EUROPEAN CITIZENSHIP if they so
wish. The GOVERNMENT will then be able to provide those who have opted
out with
BRITISH DOCUMENTATION
-only such as British (not EU)
passports, driving licences and other national documents.
EU laws will also NOT APPLY to those who
HAVE OPTED OUT OF EUROPEAN CITIZENSHIP
