How we are controlled

We are controlled in these interesting times of 2008 to an unprecedented degree in

WHAT WE THINK

WHAT WE DO

 and

WHAT WE SAY.

The methods used to achieve this degree of control can be put loosely under the following headings:

FIRSTLY and most importantly is the control of people's thinking, which is achieved by a long-term barrage of information or misinformation: in effect,

PROPAGANDA.

Having the same effect is the bane of

FREE SPEECH

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

which we all used to laugh about.

It is in danger of becoming the means by which a vocal minority can inflict their views on a

COMPLACENT MAJORITY.

The result is the closing down of rational adult debate on a number of

NO-GO

 subjects, and where eventually

ONLY ONE VIEW IS TOLERATED.

THE NEXT is by information control technology which is now available to enable a government to know everything about

YOU!

and to have that information at its fingertips. By this I mean

ID CARDS

and the growth of massive

DATA BASES

with practically unlimited capacity.

THE THIRD WAY is by spreading the feeling of

 FEAR

of

TERRORISM

or any external threat so that we don't make

TOO MUCH OF A FUSS

when new laws

FURTHER RESTRICT OUR FREEDOM.

We are also inhibited in

WHAT WE SAY

by the growth of

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

which spreads like a fog through social intercourse.  It becomes a for of self-inflicted

CENSORSHIP

which would be ludicrous

WERE IT NOT SO DANGEROUS.

FINALLY there is physical control, by officials who are entitled to enter your house or stop you in the street or close off areas of a town for plausible reasons. Under this heading comes the huge growth of

CCTV

speed cameras and, road pricing projects needing the installation of sensors in your car -and

THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.

So far in this country this has not been a big issue but read on to see the possibilities. Still more or less outside our borders is

EUROPOL

the EU police force and an incipient EU paramilitary police force.

Before we start looking at control by the EU, or

"Federalist Thought Control"

as the Bruges group eloquently puts it, let us look a a few definitions of

PROPAGANDA

The most chilling one perhaps is "to describe attempts by a

TOTALITARIAN REGIME

to achieve comprehensive subordination of knowledge to

STATE POLICY"

A 1946 definition suggested the difference between

EDUCATION AND PROPAGANDA

was that the former dealt with uncontroversial matters , while propaganda relates to controversial issues.

A 1992 one said it involves mass suggestion, the manipulation of symbols and the individual's psychology.

In 1999 a further report suggested that propaganda has a clear coherent purposive ideology, even utopianism. It ignores argumentative exchange and there is seldom any element of give and take.

The application of these definitions to examples of EU

"publicity"

 in this chapter illustrate the extent of the

PROBLEM.
