on St. George’s Day –Who are the English? - Part 2
TRUTH Something prized by the English as highly as freedom is the truth.
Truth is what distinguishes our finest poets and writers from the mediocre
ones. A love of truth has led to a nation open to honest self-examination. This in itself is an excellent thing, but one of its sadder results is
a tabloid press, which has us writhing with embarrassment. Before we dispense
with it entirely, however, locking its jaws with legal padlocks, we should
consider the astonishment of other nations notably the French, who cannot
understand why we do not stop our newspapers printing certain stories. We
cannot do it because the Press is free – free, that is, to tell the truth. Truth
dwells in the realm of language. Time after time one finds embedded in English
literature ringing statements of great wisdom. When words touch truth they soar
away from prose into poetry. So what is happening when the language becomes
garbled? Listening
to the politician on the radio is to hear a kind of gobblegook never designed
to impart any meaning. If English serves truth, it leaps with a vitality and
power that is thrilling. Gentleness,
freedom and truth: these qualities are not confined to the English; they are universal
qualities, which we in this country happen to value and, on our better days, to
display. They are the qualities, which other nations recognise and admire in
us, and the duty of the English is to know them and to nourish them. According
to the Oxford English Dictionary, a nation is: “
A large number of people of mainly common descent, language, history, etc.
usually inhabiting a territory bonded by defined limits and forming a society
under one government.” Some
of these things are obviously true of England, but some are not. The English
nation is very far from being a large number of people of mainly common
descent. From
Norman times we have been a mixed people, of little or no pure stock. Part of
the English genus is the ability to assimilate. Cucumbers, apples and tomatoes
seem as English as the Monarchy, but none of them are native in origin – and
neither is the Royal family. Many
of us cannot trace our ancestry back more than a generation or two before
finding strains of Irish, Scots or Welsh; indeed a growing number cannot go
back a generation before touching Pakistan, Jamaica and other far flung places
of Empire and Commonwealth. Are we all equally English? What does being English
consist of? To
be English one does not have to have a long English family history. It is a
matter of the present rather than the past. To
be English, however, one needs to speak English as a first language, and one
needs to want to be English. This element of the definition is, in
its absence, the reason why a significant number of inhabitants of England are
not English. It
is potentially a great source of trouble, this desire to exist separately
within a community, and it leads to ghettos. But thanks to the quality of
tolerance, it is within the power of the English to smooth over difficulties
and to accommodate them. On
the matter of Europe, we are now being coaxed into becoming something we
already are, which is European. Our long history is as European as that of any
country of the Continent. To
look at English art and culture from the stand point of Japan, India or South
America is to see a culture different only in small detail from that of the
French, Greeks and Italians. We do not have to become what we already are;
what we need to do is to find out exactly what it is that they are trying to
sell us If we buy it we may find a few will benefit
but most will not There
is a saying in Europe that the English never get on the train until it is about
to leave the station and then, having jumped on, they make their way to the
engine to take over from the driver! This
is one option we have with Europe; the other is to laugh our way out of it. For
we have a particular problem not suffered by other nations in the Union and
that is, when a law is made, we tend to abide by it. If
no one else got heated about the Maastricht Treaty (except the Danes with whom
we have a common heritage) it was because no one else seriously intends to
follow its dictates. So we are stuck with upholding laws of which we do not
approve and our only option is, when reasonable argument fails, to deride the
foolish of them and reveal them for what they are. If
being English consists in speaking the language and living under English law,
it stands to reason that we have much in common with those other
English-speaking nations whose own systems of law have derived from the same
source, namely the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. With
people of those nations we get the same feeling of security that we experience
when arriving back home from a holiday in Europe, Africa or Asia. We don’t have
to struggle to communicate with them. In
entering the European Union, we have jeopardized that relationship, but in the end the feeling
of security and real kinship may well prove stronger than any amount of
intelligible treaties. Many
of the finest elements of English culture are now under serious threat. 1)

The independence of the judges 4)
The sovereignty of English law 5)
The good use of the English language 6)
The welfare state 7)
The freedom of the Press 8)
The freedom of speech and assembly, even the Monarchy. All are being subjected to the snakeish eye of
republicanism, or what ever that movement is that would drain the colour from
the cheeks of a nation under the pretence of being fair to all. It might not be
a conscious movement to debilitate us: it could just be the swelling result of
apathy and ignorance. But whatever it is, there is an air of hypnotic
fascination around us as we become aware of danger but seem unable to move. The way out of the trance is education, and quite probably that means self-education. We need to arm ourselves quickly with facts, to study in particular the history of the law and constitution, so as to confront all attacks with that weapon which the English have always been adept at wielding: the sharp edge of reason. It will be a loss not only to England but also to the world if we allow ourselves to be sucked in by foreign ideologies. Just as every member of a family has its part to
play, so every nation of the world has its role. If in being English we uphold
values such as truth, freedom and justice, we are contributing to the well
being of all mankind. It is, after all, what others expect of us. [Bolding

The PEOPLE of GREAT BRITAIN should be allowed the option of opting out of the EUROPEAN CITIZENSHIP if they so wish. The GOVERNMENT will then be able to provide those who have opted out with BRITISH DOCUMENTATION -only such as British (not EU) passports, driving licences and other national documents. EU laws will also NOT APPLY to those who HAVE OPTED OUT OF EUROPEAN CITIZENSHIP
