Christianity

 is more than a Religion it is the main cultural force, which makes us what we are.

The following article by Susan Elkin who has taught English for over 30 years appeared in the Daily Mail, on Tuesday, April 15th, 2003 during Holy Week of that year.

 

The cutting had been kept because of the message, which it so clearly outlined of our Christian Heritage and with the forthcoming Festival of Christmas only a few months away it is as well that we should all acknowledge ‘that Christianity is more than a religion’.

Understanding Easter

 For centuries, Christians have used this week [April 15, 2003] Holy Week to commemorate the last few days in the life of Christ.

 It starts on Palm Sunday when Christ is said to have entered Jerusalem for the last time, riding a borrowed donkey.  And it ends with the near-despair of Easter Eve on Saturday after the crucifixion, but before the bright hope of new life, which comes with the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

 General knowledge? It certainly should be.  But how many children know what Holy Week stands for, why it is so called and why it matters?

Alarmingly few.

 It is not an insult to other great world religions to remind ourselves that culturally Britain is a Christian country and has been for 14 centuries.

Our way-of-life, law and attitudes are deeply rooted in it.

 It doesn’t matter what any individual may or may not believe (and I, for the record, am not a Christian believer).

 However, much as we work at human and liberal understanding, especially during a war, this country is not predominately Moslem, Buddhist or Hindu. It is Christianity that underpins European thought, and children being educated as young British citizens have a right to understand that.

 Christianity has the ‘advantage’ of being a potentially pretty tale and an excuse for a sentimental wallow.

 But there is nothing remotely nice about the events of Holy Week. So although children are accustomed on a daily basis to TV screens full of graphic and horrifying violence, schools seem to shy away from the crucifixion story.

 What do they do instead? 

Like the rest of our shallow, secularised and anything but spiritual society, they look anywhere other than to the Bible for the naff and romantic version of Easter.

 

The result?

For most children, Easter is just a spring festival and a holiday, one reduced to a season of boot fairs and chocolate guzzling.  School halls are full of pre-Christian fertility symbols, although few recognise them as that.  Rabbits, chicks and eggs are everywhere. There is hardly a cross in sight.

 

One school recently got publicity for forbidding the consumption of hot cross buns in case the crosses upset Moslem pupils.

 

It is scandalous that children are passing through our schools without being taught in depth and in detail about the stories and the thinking, which gave rise to Christianity.  And that doesn’t mean just the pretty or easy bits.

 Of course, because we have children of many cultures in our schools-and it is vital to promote tolerance-it makes sense to celebrate major non –Christian festivals as well.

 

But it is Christianity, which should have primacy because of where we are.  Young Britons of all backgrounds should learn how Christianity came to our country.

They should know, too, about the later buildings of that astonishing heritage – the great cathedrals- and be taken to visit one.   What better time than Easter for this?  The national Curriculum for Religious Education is taught according to syllabuses agreed and approved locally rather than set nationally.

 The need to provide every child with his or her spiritual entitlement is at the heart of every syllabus.  How can you do that properly without providing information and ideas?

 The conflict between good and evil and the need to come to terms with the mysteries of life and death are central to spiritual thinking across all faiths.

 Children need to explore the differences between right and wrong too.  What better peg than the Holy Week story for discussing morality.

 Children in schools should study the four gospel versions of the main stories, learning that the details differ considerably and why, a basic ‘media studies’ lesson about reporting of events and how to read accounts critically.

 What a great opportunity to keep alive the King James Bible, too. With its powerful poetic simplicity, it is the most important work of literature published in English.

 For hundreds of years much of our high art and music has drawn its inspiration from Christian mythology.  How can a child appreciate Michelangelo’s Pieta or the profoundly spiritual ‘He was Despised’ from Handel’s Messiah if they don’t know the story of Holy Week?

 Wishy-washy, politically correct teachers and syllabus compilers have no right to deny young people informed access to some of the greatest of all works of art.

 Christianity is more than a religion.  In Britain it is the main cultural force, which has made us what we are.  So it is time schools recognised that it is too important to be reduced to a furry toy or a bit of chocolate confectionary.

In May 1940, the Reich Association for Economic Planning issued a document containing the statement mentioned on page 209: 'A continental European economy under German leadership must... comprise all the peoples of the Continent from Gibraltar to the Urals and from the North Cape to the island of Cyprus...[but] on foreign-political grounds it appears to be necessary to designate this not as a German extended-area economy, but fundamentally always to speak of a European Economic Community' ['Europaisches Wirtschaftsgemeinshaft']

Chapter 10, Volume Two of Hitler's 'Mein Kampf' was entitled' FEDERALISM AS A MASK'. Careful analysis of the typically 'roundabout' language still employed by covert Pan-Germans, the heirs of Nazi International, today are revealed that this 'line' is the essence of Germany's hegemony ideology. In other words there has never been any discontinuity of Pan-German strategy up to, through and since the Nazi were in power in Berlin.

Note the explicit geographical description of the scope and boundaries of the intended 'German extended-area economy': 'Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals'. Within this 'Thousand-Year-Reich', the sovereignty of the captive nations will have been destroyed, in line with Lenin's pronouncement that' we set ourselves the ultimate aim of destroying the state'- with one critical exception: Germany itself is to survive as Greater Germany, but under a different name. Hence, there was and is to be one rule (state survival) for the Germans, and another (state destruction) for all other captive European peoples.  The European Union has developed exactly in accordance with the blueprint elaborated by the Nazis in the 1940s.

To ensure the realisation of their deception strategy, it is clear that the continuing Pan-German planners have in practice, so to speak 'bolted the framework' of their strategy onto the revolutionary structures of the Leninist Communists. While the heirs of the Nazis have cunningly elaborated and perfected over the years their own version of diplomatic and propaganda double-talk comparable to a form of Leninist Aesopianism, as elaborated by Stresemann and Adenauer, they have made spectacular progress with the fulfilment of the Nazis International's plans hatched at the German Geopolitical Centre, that they no longer bother to disguise them. But the Pan Germans, reckless and ruthless as always, are running huge risks-because they are dealing in bad faith with both the continuing Soviet Leninists and with the confused West European Socialist Governments.

The fact that the continuing Pan-German strategists are secretly using 'federalism as a mask', as Hitler proclaimed in 'Mein Kampf', and are agitating day and night for regional federalism and for the full collectivisation of residual sovereignty throughout the European Union, while seeking to disguise that this prescription will never apply to Greater Germany itself, alone justifies this book's finding that the

EUROPEAN UNION COLLECTIVE

is indeed

THE ENEMY OF ITS MEMBER STATES.

That the EU is likewise responding to the parallel pressures from the continuing Leninists for 'universal European integration', means the EU membership is truly a 'kiss of death' for those countries that have been led by their misguided elites into this terminal trap-from where their demoralised citizens mare condemned to watching their countries being tortured, raped and beaten to death under the relentless pressures of the frenzied and accelerating 'coup d'etat by installments'.

Driven by the insane logic of Lenin's idolatrous World Revolution-which preaches 'change' to WHAT?', and which presupposes total collectivisation for the whole of humanity-the covert Communists, who are currently following Lenin's deception instruction that, for the time being, 'under no circumstances {is it our task} to promote Communist views', insist that the only acceptable' prescription for Europe (by which they mean Eurasia) must be 'universal European integration'. Lenin taught the revolutionaries to be meticulous with the use of words (a trick acquired also by Pan-Germans). Thus the key-word here is 'universal- which precludes any question of boundary imitations.  For the Leninists claim that, because they are 'Europeans' and control the political space eastwards to the pacific Ocean, 'universal European integration' means 'Europe from the Atlantic to Vladivostok' , which they also refer to as 'Great Europe', and which must be 'guaranteed' by the Comintern's long-planned system of 'collective security', centred on Moscow. In other words, there has never been  any true discontinuity of Soviet strategy since the 1920s, and especially since the 'changes' of 1989-91-which represented a Leninist, rather than a genuine, 'Break with the Past'.

For the time being, it suits the interests of the 'General Staff' of Lenin's World Revolution, for the European Union Collective-or the 'new European Soviet' ,as Gobachev has accurately described it-to devote its seething revolutionary energies to the maximisation of federalism and collectivisation within its inexplicably eastwards-expanding 'boundaries'. But despite bilateral treaties, the trilateral nexus with France, a complex bilateral and multilateral treaty network drafted by the Leninist apparat ['rats'] to ensure 100% European compliance with the Soviets' 'Europe from Atlantic to Vladivostok' model, the continuing Leninist strategists know that the Germans are using European federalism 'as a mask' for the final realisation of their own previously thwarted idolatrous geopolitical ambitions.

While each side is engaged in strategic deception directed in part against each other, and in both cases against naive socialist Europeans, both expect their model alone shall prevail.  The chess-playing Soviets took the precaution to ensure, by means of a threatening military posture [See page 237] which appears to have been largely overlooked, that only their prescription can ever be applied.  They also left a time bomb lying in the Czech Republic.  Additionally, to procure the intended 'Soviet' outcome, the Revolution has taken the necessary precautions, co-ordinated by Vladimir Putin and the Soviet Military Intelligence while Putin was serving in East Germany [Previous home of Frau Merkel], to ensure that Germany's political and bureaucratic structures have been extensively penetrated and taken over by covert and 'former' Communists from the east.  The likelihood is that the Pan-Germans, having compromised as in the past with Communists, and driven by their 'leaning towards Russia', will misinterpret the Leninists' intentions as they approach the realisation of their long-frustrated ambition to subsume Germany in its 'transitional format', with

by another name. They will overplay their hand.

 Europe cannot look to France for any hope of rescue or salvation, since Paris is enmeshed in its insidious trilateral nexus with Germany and Russia - certain that its treaty relationship with Germany can only be to its advantage, and bound to be covert Leninist revolutionaries by the terms of its bilateral treaty of 7th February 1992, under the terms of which France has become an agent for Lenin's World Revolution.  The smaller European powers are hobbled by the ideologies who control policy; and even in Portugal and Ireland, where the adverse economic consequences of their rash participation in the Economic and Monetary Collective's straightjacket are becoming daily more apparent, no serious official thought is being given to the logical step which will need to be taken if severe economic consequences are to be avoided. Ironically, though, the eccentric President of the European Commission, Signor Prodi, is on record as having mused that Italy might have to leave the collective regime, even though this is not permitted under the Collective Treaty.

Only the United Kingdom, which since the beginning of the 1970s has been systematically betrayed by its successive governments, led by the 'Conservatives', has, among the EU 'Member States' of world substance, contrived, though incompetence and fumbling, to hold back a little from the revolutionary onslaught. The slim chances of Britain escaping national annihilation were diminishing at an ever accelerating pace as this book was being finalised.  For instance, on 6th February n2002, the European 'Parliament' approved the European Arrest Warrant [See page xxxiii] and blocked the habeas corpus safeguard established by the English Common Law since the 13th century, as a means of preventing over-zealous or corrupt magistrates from incarcerating EU citizens from another EU country sine die in their own jails, or in those of a third EU country.  This appalling retrograde decision means that Britons, with effect from 2004, will be at risk of being arbitrarily arrested for crimes which are not recognised in English Law, such as racism or xenophobia. The definition of 'terrorism' was extended to cover 'passive' support for prescribed groups ( the list of which can be extended, of course, to include critics of the revolutionary EU collectivist dictatorship), and the legislation will enable a judge or a prosecuting magistrate anywhere in the EU Collective to order the extradition of a British citizen on the basis of suspicion alone without any need for a dossier of evidence to be presented.

 

Thus the shape of 'The Beast' is emerging before our eyes, from behind the hideous edifice of Europe's Tower of Babal. Diabolically, it has the imprimatur of the captive nation states whose blind political elites have fallen into this Nazi-Soviet trap. For the EU is indeed

Ten months from now, according to the doom-mongers, we could be back on rations for the first time since the Fifties. With lines of lorries backing up more than 30 miles from the Channel ports, Britain will face gridlock and food shortages.

For a hellish mess of endless paperwork and bureaucracy lies in wait if we leave the European customs union and the frictionless trade which comes with it. Things will be even worse on the island of Ireland as the terrorists disinter their hidden stashes of Kalashnikovs and Semtex to wage war on any British attempts to reimpose a post Brexit border between North and South.

This, then, is the Project Fear vision of Britain in March 2019. There is only one way to avert this catastrophe, according to the more hysterical members of the House of Lords: we must cave in on all this Brexit nonsense, forget about silly free-trade agreements and remain locked into the customs union. Otherwise our entire haulage industry will seize up while the bullets fly in Crossmaglen.

 

This, then, is the Project Fear vision of Britain in March 2019

To which I can only say: don't forget to include the flying pigs — and the plague of frogs, too. For this is claptrap.

The vexed question of the Irish border is back with a vengeance these days. What should be a footnote to the Brexit negotiations is being elevated to an existential crisis by Brussels and Westminster's energetic gang of Brexit-wreckers.

The EU has warned that Brexit talks could collapse entirely if agreement cannot be reached on a way to handle £3 billion of annual North/South trade — between Northern Ireland, which will be outside the EU after Brexit, and the Republic, which will still be inside it.

Arch-Remainer Lord Patten has likened any attempt to create a border between the two countries as 'a can of petrol and a box of matches'.

Quite apart from the deplorable tactic of absolving the terrorist and blaming the Government for violence, Patten neglects the fact that a border already exists for different excise duties levied on fuel, alcohol and tobacco products; that a border already exists in terms of currency (Ireland has the Euro, Ulster has the Pound); and the world has moved on from old-fashioned barriers and checkpoints anyway.

Of course, it suits the Project Fear brigade to paint the Irish border as Armageddon if it keeps us in the customs union because that, in turn, prevents us conducting any free trade deals with the rest of the world. Whereupon Brexit is scuppered.

But those peddling this alarmist nonsense should take a trip, as I did this week, to the end of the A14 — and then apologise.

For here on the quayside at Felixstowe — Britain's largest container port by a very large margin — they deal with 25 times more trade than the entire North/South Irish border every year.

Before my eyes, scanners and barcodes are speeding containers on their way. If they can do so here, they could surely help find a way to break the deadlock over tariffs?

And remember, there is not a customs officer in sight. One Suffolk quayside handles £80 billion of trade a year — that is £77 billion more than the entire Irish border — without a glitch.

Right now, I am surrounded by 50,000 containers stacked across an 835-acre site. Things are busy as you would expect, but certainly not hectic.

The atmosphere is calm. Some of these huge metal boxes are on the way into Britain fully loaded, some on the way out. But all will move one way or the other as soon as the owners want them.
 

Here in Felixstowe, things are much slicker these days. The various agencies use intelligence-gathering and data analysis, not Jobsworths

Urgent or dangerous goods — fireworks for example — will be off the premises in no time. Containers with frozen goods inside are stacked on special electrified cold storage racks. Those which are part of a particular supply chain, for a car plant or supermarket group, will wait for their slot in the customer's schedule.

In effect, I am looking at Britain's biggest warehouse. And I can find no one here who is unduly worried about the 'hardness' or 'softness' of Brexit, for the simple reason they will cope with whatever the system asks of them — just as they do already. And this place is still expanding.

Given that the average insured value of each container is £20,000, I am actually looking at a billion pounds of trade right now. And most of it has had nothing to do with the EU customs union.

Over the course of a year, four million container units —the great majority from outside the EU — will pass through Felixstowe on some of the world's biggest ships. Because they are mainly non-EU goods, they must be declared and processed.

As it happens, many EU containers in the same ships already go through this system because it is so painless and it just would be more complicated to separate them from the non-EU stuff.

And guess what? It all works like clockwork.

A further 250,000 containers currently come and go by lorry each year on the roll-on/roll-off ferries heading to and from the Netherlands.

Because they are travelling inside the EU and thus inside the customs union, these goods do not need to be declared. Post-Brexit they may need to be. In which case, they will have to comply with the same process as the other four million. It is not rocket science. In fact, it is not even particularly difficult.

Here on the quayside, five mega-ships are all unloading and reloading at once. The one immediately in front of me is a record-breaker, the OOCL Indonesia. There is nothing bigger on the high seas.

It arrived from the Far East a few hours earlier and will disgorge its non-EU cargo of absolutely everything under the sun in just a day or so, before heading on to Rotterdam and then back to the Far East.

A North Sea ferry beetles in to an adjacent berth fresh from the Netherlands, bearing goods from inside the EU. It looks like a child's bath toy compared to the 22- storey Hong Kong-registered behemoth next to it.

The OOCL Indonesia is a quarter of a mile long. It carries the equivalent of 21,000 container units. In other words, it has a cargo worth £420 million at any given moment.

Brexit will not make the slightest difference to this astonishing operation. A ship like the OOCL Indonesia shifts goods worth billions every year. Its owners have a very simple global perspective. If Britain wants stuff, Britain will get stuff — and on time.

Just a handful of human beings are involved in this extraordinary mechanical ballet. The crane drivers work simultaneously on different bits of different ships, lifting off containers like blocks of Lego and plonking them on to trailers.

The trailer drivers then shuttle each container to the airport-sized container yard, where another crane puts them in their pre-assigned places. Most will be on a rail wagon or lorry to somewhere in Britain within hours.

This place doesn't have one rail terminal. It has three. There are two things I fail to see all day: any paperwork, and Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs. That is because this vast operation has no paperwork. And there is no customs officer either.

A container can be off the deck of the OOCL Indonesia, on a lorry and out on the road in quarter of an hour, even if it has come from that terrifying land of anarchy and strife — otherwise known as 'the world outside the EU'.

That is because of an automated customs system that works perfectly. All of which raises that same question: if Felixstowe can smoothly handle £80 billion in trade from outside the customs union each year, is it really so hard for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to cope with a mere £3 billion without going to war?

The fact that I cannot spot any customs checks at Felixstowe does not mean they are not going on.

HMRC monitors every single non-EU container on every ship.

They just don't happen to have a team of pen-chewing functionaries with hi-viz jackets and clipboards wandering around the dockyard kicking tyres and asking lorry drivers if they have anything to declare. That is a world that vanished years ago.

Here in Felixstowe, things are much slicker these days. The various agencies use intelligence-gathering and data analysis, not Jobsworths. Every year, 80,000 of the four million containers passing through here are cracked open and checked for any number of infringements.

I am taken inside 'Shed 70', a huge complex with a whole series of hermetically sealed testing areas, each the size of a supermarket. Some are solely for checking animal products, some for frozen food and so on.

We enter a spotless unloading bay used only for testing cargo containing nuts. The health inspectors have picked out a container full of sacks of groundnuts from Gambia.

They want a sample from every single pallet-load in order to check for a particular type of mould. In the next-door bay, trading standards officers have just confiscated a consignment of baby swings from China which are deemed to be suspect.

In other words, there are plenty of checks going on. But 98 per cent of non-EU goods will pass through here as easily as EU goods, for the simple reason that most have cleared customs before they even touch British soil.

They do so using a tried-and-tested digital cargo-tracking system developed here in Felixstowe. Known as Destin8, it has worked so well for more than a decade that it now processes most of the non-EU maritime trade coming into this country.

So how difficult would it be to adapt this acclaimed system if Britain left the customs union, so that it also had to include all the EU trade coming in to Felixstowe? Billions of pounds? Years of pain and technical heartache? Er, not exactly. It might take, ooh, a minute or so.

'It would probably involve a few extra keystrokes,' says Alan Long, chief executive of MCP, the company behind Destin8.

The system was developed years ago here in Felixstowe by a consortium of all the main players — the port people, the customs people, the shipping people and so on. It has now been adopted in 70 per cent of British ports.

Anyone trading goods from outside the EU clicks a few boxes on their computer and the software does the rest.

It will send the manifest (the description of the goods) and the customs declaration to every relevant party — including the shipping company, the port and the haulage company.

The details will also go to every border control agency from HMRC (who look for contraband), Port Health (food), DEFRA (crops), trading standards (dodgy goods), the Forestry Commission and dozens more.

The system gives every consignment a unique number known as an MRN — think of it as a barcode — which removes the need for paperwork altogether. The Destin8 system will also link in to HMRC's system, work out all the tariffs and duty, and automatically deduct whatever needs paying from the trader's account.

Every politician, on either side of the Brexit debate, should come to Suffolk and meet Alan Long and his small, motivated team in their hi-tech offices in a converted chapel on the edge of Felixstowe.

Yet few have yet to do so. Nor have the Whitehall experts charged with implementing our departure from the EU been to consult the real experts here in Felixstowe.

As far as Brexit is concerned, Mr Long says his company will just adapt their systems to suit whatever deal the Government and the EU agree. They are also exploring a specific solution to the Dover/Calais cross-Channel route and to the shorter routes across the Irish Sea, which have their own unique problems due to the brevity of the journey. A seven-hour North Sea crossing allows the current system quite enough time for any customs data to be processed.

In the time it takes a post-Brexit lorryload of apples to travel by ferry from the Netherlands to Felixstowe or Harwich, all will be sorted.

With shorter transit times, a different system will be needed to handle a similar lorryload between Calais and Dover or Fishguard and Dublin. Mr Long has no doubt a solution will be found.

'The logistics industry always finds a way to do these things,' he assures me. 'It will just be a hybrid system.' He can't be more specific for now as his company is in the midst of designing the answer.

And the Northern Irish border with Ireland? He says that the obvious common-sense solution for the moment is to ask exporters and importers to fill in self- assessment forms — much like tax returns — reinforced by rigorous spot-checks and penalties. Those do not have to take place at the border anyway.

Nearby, I meet Jason Flower, managing director of KWL Logistics and chairman of the Felixstowe Port Users Association.

He manages freight for many international exporters, and says that he has European clients who want to know how things will work after Brexit.

He himself voted against Britain leaving the EU, but says that now it is happening we need to make it work. Like everyone in Felixstowe — both Remainers and Leavers — he subscribes to the 'GOWI' philosophy: 'Get on with it'.

Is he filled with doom and gloom — or will things pan out? 'I'm an optimist,' he says. 'There may be some small extra costs to start with. It always takes a bit of time to get used to a new system. But we'll sort it out.'

He remembers the not-too-distant days of infernal paperwork — for both EU as well as non-EU goods. Things are so much better now.

Down at the cafe next to the harbour entrance, a small crowd is glued to the sight of another monster being nudged into her berth by two tug boats.

The Madison Maersk has come straight from Colombo, Sri Lanka, with 18,000 containers on top. Not one of them comes under the magic wand of the EU customs union.

Every single one needs its own 'MRN' barcode and customs declaration. Yet the first will be trundling up the A14 within the hour.

If Britain grinds to a halt next March, I will eat my hat (Remoaners insist there won't be much else on the menu). But if it does not, will those Brexit-wrecking peers be prepared to do the same? Share or comment on this article:

More than 40 of the country's top thinkers have launched a pro-Brexit campaign to fight the tide of Remain 'propaganda'.

Leading economists, lawyers, philosophers, historians and social scientists want to challenge the impression all academics oppose leaving the EU.

The group, which includes Remain voters, has criticised the contempt shown by those seeking to reverse the referendum result who regard large numbers of Leave supporters as 'unworthy of consideration'.

Trying to overturn that vote 'would outrage democratic sovereignty, cause dangerous and lasting dissension, and make the United Kingdom an international laughing stock', they said.

A new website, briefingsforbrexit.com, will challenge 'ludicrous' claims about the economic consequences of leaving.

It is the brainchild of two Cambridge academics, the historian Professor Robert Tombs and the economist Dr Graham Gudgin.

Other figures who have signed up to the project include former MI6 chief Sir Richard Dearlove, the Labour peer Lord Glasman, the Oxford law professor Dr Richard Ekins and Baroness Ruth Deech, the former chairman of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, The Sunday Times reported.

Dr Gudgin, an emeritus professor at the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge, and Professor Tombs, emeritus professor of French history at Cambridge and the author of The English And Their History, both voted in favour of entering the Common Market in 1975, but backed Leave in the referendum, concerned about centralisation of powers in Brussels. 

Professor Tombs said: 'To every crisis that comes along, the answer is always more centralisation, never less.'

Dr Gudgin said he came up with the idea for the website 'during one of those terribly pessimistic weeks. When Theresa May wasn't going to last until teatime and there was definitely going to be a second referendum.

'Together we thought, 'Gosh, we ought to be better organised than at the last referendum'.' 
 
 

He added: 'Nobody who appears on the BBC and says 'this is going to be a catastrophe' is ever asked what their view is based on.'

Professor Tombs said his motivation was the 'whole tide of propaganda about how awful everything was, how awful everything was going to be, and we didn't believe this.

'We realised quite a lot of other people didn't believe it either.' They criticised the contempt shown by many Remainers to those who voted Leave.

Professor Tombs said: 'Graham and I have working-class or lower middle-class backgrounds. 

'I do feel you just can't write off a large part of the population as being unworthy of consideration.'

He said he voted Leave because he feared the EU would break up or become 'much more centralised,' adding: 'We've seen how that works in Italy and Greece: A political choice is defeated by sheer weight of economic pressure – if you do this, your currency or economy will collapse.
 

I don't think that would last and I don't see how it could have a good end. I don't think we either want to be, or ought to be, a party to that.'

Professor Tombs said his research found that the narrative of the decline of post-imperial Britain in the mid-20th century – one of the driving forces behind the decision to join the EU – was a myth. 

'I think, speaking as a historian and as a patriot, we were taken into the EU on a misunderstanding of our situation,' he said. 

'It would have been better in the 1960s and 1970s to continue to ask for a free trade agreement.

'I don't think most people understood the full implications of what we were signing up to politically.'

Their analysis of British growth in per-capita GDP since 1952 showed it was better before we joined the bloc than after. Dr Gudgin said recent Government figures which purported to show huge falls in growth in most regions of the EU after Brexit were 'ludicrous'.
 

He led a team of academics who proved that the assumptions behind the Project Fear papers produced by the Treasury before the referendum were wrong, and failed to take account of the fact that Britain was almost the only EU state that had more trade outside the EU than inside.

He criticised its 'extreme assumptions' which led the Treasury to 'an exaggerated estimate of the impact of Brexit'. 

The two academics said there was a rush of interest from other researchers after their project was conceived – but some Brexiteer academics were afraid to go public for fear it would hit their promotion prospects. 

Many universities get a lot of money from the EU, leading to many academics taking a 'narrow, corporatist view'.

Dr Gudgin said: 'One of our contributors said he was told by a younger pro-Brexit colleague that his professor had told him that people who voted Brexit were the sort of people who sent his relatives to concentration camps.'

Professor Tombs added: 'I thought one thing we academics were paid to do was help explain things to people, but universities have become so simple-minded about this.'

David Davis has pledged not to betray the British fishing industry like Edward Heath did in the 1970s.

The Brexit Secretary said he could understand why fishermen feel ‘nervous’.

But he promised that by the 2020s – after the Brexit ‘transition’ period – the UK will finally experience the benefits of leaving the EU and having full control of its own waters.

Mr Davis’s comments come days after it emerged that the quota regime will not be specifically reformed after Brexit.

A leaked draft of the Fisheries White Paper suggests that large foreign firms are set to keep their rights to fish in the UK’s coastal waters.

Asked whether he was selling out British fishermen, Mr Davis told the Daily Mail: ‘No. But during the implementation period we can’t pick and choose. We don’t have time for that.

‘I can understand why the fishermen are nervous. Back in the era of Edward Heath their interests were not served well. 

'I give them a promise: we are not going to do that. 

'After the implementation period, we will control our own waters. We will start that discussion while we are still in transition.’

Mr Heath was the Europhile Tory prime minister who took Britain into the Common Market in 1973.

Last night the Brexit Secretary said: ‘The naysayers, those who think we should pack up or give in, are wrong. Every week we are negotiating in good faith to deliver a new relationship, with Britain outside the EU, that will stand the test of time. Next week is no exception.

‘It’s not about expecting the worst, or setting our sights low, it’s about agreeing a substantial trade deal that works for the UK and our friends and allies in Europe.

At present, around 40 per cent of England’s fishing quota is operated by foreign-owned vessels. 

One Dutch firm alone controls two-thirds of the country’s entire quota allocation for North Sea herring.

The leaked White Paper suggests this will not change even after we leave the EU, meaning smaller firms will be unable to access a significantly larger section of the coastal fish stock. 

Responding to the revelation, Tory MP Andrew Rosindell said: ‘Getting back control of our seas and fishing grounds is one of the key reasons for voting to leave the EU and therefore the Common Fisheries Policy. That has to happen.

‘Our fishermen will expect nothing less and I trust the Prime Minister to deliver it.’

The Mail has reported in recent weeks on cases which appear to show that the Government is not straining every sinew to back its fishermen.

Earlier this month it was revealed that the Foreign Office has handed

£75million-worth of fishing licences

in the South Atlantic to companies from Norway, Chile and New Zealand.

Two firms based in the Falklands Islands, a British overseas territory, had their applications rejected, although one of them has now been given leave to appeal.

For 40 years as an MP, I fought to protect the British fishing industry — only to see it ruined in England and damaged in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Although Brexit now offers a great opportunity to rebuild the industry, it is tragic to see that chance being thrown away.

For it is appalling that Chancellor Philip Hammond is touting our fishing rights as disposable, and hinting that the Government may give them away in return for a better Brexit deal.

He has suggested that British fishermen might have to accept foreign trawlers having significant access even after the UK has regained control of its traditional fishing grounds.

Asked if it would be 'acceptable' to trade fishing rights for a better deal for lucrative sectors of the economy such as the City, Mr Hammond said: 'We would be open to discussing the appropriate arrangements for reciprocal access for our fishermen to EU waters and for EU fishermen to our waters.'

Shamefully, he's wobbling and playing into the hands of the EU's Brexit negotiators. For they are desperately cherry-picking parts of a deal (something, of course, our government's negotiators are not allowed to do) by demanding fishing access for their fleets in return for the UK having tariff-free trade access to the remaining 27 EU countries.

Such a craven concession would fit with the way our fishing industry has been sold out to foreigners over the years.

For four decades as MP for Grimsby (where fishing has been vital to the town since mediaeval times), I watched as fishing ministers (both Labour and Conservative) promised to get a better deal for the UK industry in the annual December negotiations.

I then watched as they betrayed those promises — announcing cuts in our quotas, bans on threatened species, as well as denying the British industry the subsidies and support that our European competitors were getting.

It even took a quarter of a century to get niggardly compensation for the thousands of fishermen who lost their jobs when our boats were expelled from Icelandic waters following the so-called Cod Wars in the Seventies.

What's more, we were refused the opportunity to rebuild our industry in our own waters, in the same way every other country was doing. It was Ted Heath who betrayed British fishing when, as prime minister, he took us into the Common Market. He saw our industry as 'expendable', giving away our fishing grounds in his desperate desire to join the European club.

And so we lost control of one of the richest fisheries in the world. For the six founding members of the Common Market ordained that member states should be given 'equal access' to each other's fisheries, re-defined as a 'common resource'.

For four decades as MP for Grimsby (pictured), I watched as fishing ministers (both Labour and Conservative) promised to get a better deal for the UK industry

Since then, it has been one sacrifice after another.

Ministers have not stood up for our fishing industry in the way their counterparts in other countries have done for their own.

For example, Iceland's government protected its waters from being looted, and Norway's membership of the Single Market did not give EU nations any fishing rights off its coast. As independent nations, Iceland and Norway have built up their fishing industries within their own 200-mile limits. So has almost every other fishing nation.

But not Britain, with its weak and unpatriotic ministers.

The fact is that other EU countries, having fished out their own waters, are desperate for ours.

Currently, foreign boats take 80 per cent of the catch in UK waters. EU countries catch nearly two-thirds of their fish in our waters.

Because 'Skipper' Ted Heath was conned into accepting 'equal access to a common resource', our waters are open to any citizen of another EU country with a boat and a net. There's no legal basis to the EU's demands. Fishing is not part of the Single Market, though fish products are.

Brexit means the UK leaving the EU. It means that instead of Brussels rules, the UN law of the sea will prevail — giving us sovereignty over territorial waters out to 200 miles, or the mid-point between nearer countries.

But the words of wobbling Mr Hammond suggest otherwise. No wonder there are grave fears our government might sacrifice our fishing industry by being daft enough to sign up yet again to the notorious Common Fisheries Policy. But it must not.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove, whose father had a fishing business that closed down because of EU fishing policy, has said: 'We're taking back control of our fishing policy.'

He added: 'It means that for the first time in more than 50 years we will be able to decide who can access our waters.'

Ministers must not renege on that promise. It is the Government's moral duty to protect our fishing grounds and maintain sustainable stocks to hand this precious resource to future generations. Other countries see our grounds as something to be looted for as long as they can — and preferably for ever.

Disingenuously, Brussels argues that fish don't have passports. They breed in one area and migrate to another.

That's true. But it shouldn't have been an excuse for a policy that covered immature and breeding stocks and punished British-based boats.

For many fish spawn in non-British areas of the North Sea, and are protected from fishing. But as soon as they mature and move into our waters, they can be caught.

Such unfairness is glaringly obvious to everyone in our fishing ports. But it seems Philip Hammond doesn't realise what those Brussels predators want. They want to frighten Britain and please the remaining 27 members.

It is no coincidence that the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, is a former French fishing minister who wants his countrymen to keep over-fishing our sea bass and anything else they can. It is also a natural desire for Germans. Almost all the herring they consume and 60 per cent of mackerel comes from British waters. One of the country's largest fish processing plants, Rugen Fisch, is in an area where Chancellor Angela Merkel has often canvassed during elections.

In my time as MP for Grimsby, I witnessed the over-fishing that the Common Fisheries Policy had led to, and have watched as foreign vessels suspected of over-fishing escaped checks by inspectors because they were too fast, while British boats that had done nothing wrong had nets inspected.

One of the worst scandals was the flagrant abuse of the rules which have allowed foreign vessels to register as British to cynically catch our quota.

Most surreally, I was once introduced to a man who I was told was the 'chair of the Fleetwood (Lancashire) Fishing Vessel Owners'. He was Spanish and spoke little English.

I've witnessed, in foreign ports, fish that has been illegally caught, being landed without a single check.

There's no reason for prolonging this farce. Or Britain's sad and enormous sacrifice.

The British fishing industry can only be rebuilt by safeguarding our waters and having the ability to enforce sustainable fishing. Only that certainty will bring investment.

After four decades of neglect and decline, our coastal fishing areas mustn't be betrayed again. I'm sorry, Mr Hammond, they are not negotiating counters simply to be traded away. They're a way of life and a vital British industry.

It's time for us to stand up and tell Monsieur Barnier: 'Allez vous en!'

The basic payout of £122.30 a week is the least generous in the West – worth just 29 per cent of average earnings – and last night former pensions minister Ros Altmann warned the situation could get even worse.

Government projections suggest that for those now under 30 the age when they can claim a state pension will have to be raised to 70, while future payments could be cut even further to avoid needing massive hikes in national insurance, Baroness Altmann said.

The league table revealing Britain's pension shame was compiled by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which analyses the world's industrialised nations. 

Out of all the countries compared, Britain comes bottom – even behind poorer nations such as Chile, Poland and Mexico.

While the UK's state pension is worth just 29 per cent of average earnings, in France the equivalent figure is 74.5 per cent. 

Germany's state pension is worth 50.5 per cent of average earnings, while in the USA it is 49.1 per cent. 

The most generous state pension in the world is in the Netherlands, where the payments are slightly higher than average earnings.

Baroness Altmann warned that despite a recent overhaul to the pension system, payments will need to be cut further to avoid massive tax rises in future to pay for it. 

She said: 'We are one of the world's leading economies, but our support for the oldest in society is not fit for purpose.

'In April 2016, major reforms to the UK state pension were supposed to have made the system affordable for the future, reducing its generosity. Beyond the 2030s, the new state pension will be lower than the old system for most people and the lowest paid, predominantly women, will lose significantly from the new system.

'Despite this, the Government has been advised that the costs of paying state pensions will soar so much over the next 20 years and beyond that further cuts could be required.'

From later this year the state pension age for women will rise from 63 to match men at 65, and will reach 66 for both by 2020.

The Government's economic forecasters, the Actuary's Department, believes it will become 70 in the 2050s and 71 in the 2060s.

This would mean that anyone aged 30 or below now will not get their state pension until they are 70, while those under 20 will have to wait until they are 71.

Baroness Altmann added: 'The Government actuary believes that just funding the UK's exceptionally low state pension will require reducing payments in future or dramatic tax rises. Policymakers face difficult decisions and are also likely to need to increase the state pension age further.'

The former pensions minister called on the Government to do more to address the crisis, including making private pensions more attractive so that more people are willing to pay a portion of their wages into their own fund.

'To avoid burdening younger generations with significant tax rises, it is vital that more is done to boost private pension saving,' she added. 'Auto-enrolment is a good start, but the pensions industry needs to attract more customers to pay more into their pensions.'

A new era of independence is almost upon us. A year from now,

MARCH 29,2019

 Britain will formally withdraw from the EU, beginning the process of restoring our sovereignty from foreign rule.

But the 2016 referendum result has undoubtedly left deep divisions in our country.

Supporters of Brexit are optimistic about the long-term future, welcoming the return of democratic control over our borders, trade, justice system and laws.

In contrast, diehard Remainers constantly preach a message of doom — determined to create a climate of despair. They tell us that Britain faces economic meltdown and international isolation.

At the same time, they try to smear the democratic process, claiming that the vote by 17.4 million people was a triumph for bigotry and insularity.

This sneering and utterly unfounded attitude is espoused by the Liberal Democrats leader Sir Vince Cable, who has said Brexit was ‘driven by nostalgia’ for a world where ‘faces were white’ — despite the fact that most European migrants are white.

 

And yet the Remainers’ litany of woe has proved hopelessly ill-judged. Far from collapsing, the economy has grown robustly since the referendum, with employment levels and export orders at record levels.

Similarly, Brexit negotiations have gone much more smoothly than predicted by Jeremiah pessimists — particularly the BBC — who try to portray every problem as a crisis.

Nor has Britain, as the scaremongers of Project Fear said, become a pariah on the global stage. On the contrary, the Government’s tough stance towards Russia over the Salisbury poisonings led this week to an unprecedented show of solidarity from other nations.

On a more fundamental level, Remainers seem to show no understanding as to why the majority of the electorate backed Leave.

Constant attacks, equating Brexiteers with the dark, reactionary forces of prejudice, could not be more wrong.

In fact, the overwhelming impetus behind Brexit was a profound love of country, reflected in a patriotic desire to regain self-governance, uphold our own democracy and restore our nationhood.

These, surely, are noble sentiments. After all, the drive for national autonomy is the ideal that has inspired so many liberation movements through history, from the American Revolution of the 18th century, to the Indian push for independence in the mid- 20th century.

Moreover, the willingness to stand up for our own national freedom is a great British tradition, revealed at its

But, for many Remainers, patriotism is something to be sneered at — an outmoded, reactionary concept that promotes aggression and exclusion.

Yet true patriotism is an extension of the love for family, a primeval and profoundly moral force that gives meaning to citizenship, providing unity to the nation and a sense of mutual belonging and identity to the people.

Few Britons have understood this better than George Orwell, the great chronicler of English patriotism, whose writings are infused with a deep, though often critical, devotion to our island.

Orwell is best remembered for his two novels, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, which both warned, chillingly, of the dangers of totalitarianism.

But in 1941, he published a brilliant essay on our national character called England Your England. In it, he attempted not only to highlight some of the qualities that embodied our national spirit, but also to extol the virtue of British pride, which he described as the ‘invisible chain’ by which ‘the nation is bound together’.

SINCE Theresa May's clarion call to address the UK's housing shortage (and how many successive prime ministers have embarked on the same heave-ho?) countless comment pieces have addressed the 'real' problems that drive the disjunction between

SUPPLY and DEMAND.

Nimbyism. Complex. protracted planning permission. Developer land banking (when companies own vast plots of land but do not build on them). Rich Chinese and Russians investing in unoccupied properties as three-dimensional bank accounts. Excessive protection of green belts. Second homeowners. The catastrophic sell-off of social housing.

[In the main: One word sums this up

GREED]

Awkward

Yet, when two statistics are out of whack-in this case the number of homes available, and the number needed-it behoves us to look at them both.  All the above dysfunctions regard

SUPPLY.

Which suggests there's something awkward about looking instead at

DEMAND

At Radio 3 Free Thinking Festival event last weekend, I all but came to blows with the 'rational optimist' on my panel who believes continued human population growth will be modest and benign.

The moment I mentioned the inevitable pressures on Europe of

MASS IMMIGRATION

the poor gentleman exploded, as if i'd tripped the pin on a hand grenade. He railed about how we screwed up in Libya, and the need for more overseas staff.

Give this guy this, he did rouse righteous applause from the great and the good progressives in the audience

But let's look at this housing business. It took half a century for the UK population

to rise from 50.3 million in 1950

TO

59.1 million in 2000

[And we know that governments have admitted on a number of occasions over the years that they don't know the true figure of the foreign population at any one time with no doubt a million or two having submerged into the general population at large.]

In that period, the foreign-born population rose from 4.3 per cent to 8.8 per cent -so a measure of that increase was already accounted for by

 NEWCOMERS

After an inflow historically unprecedented for this country, this brief century alone has seen the

UK POPULATION

 shoot up to

65.6 MILLION

14per cent of whom were

FOREIGN BORN

as of 2016

We're adding another half million every year.

According to the Office of National Statistics, the UK population is set to cross

70 MILLION by 2029;

places it even sooner in 2026.

Demographic predictions are notoriously undependable, but near-term projections tend to be more reliable.

Oxford demographer David Coleman estimates 85 per cent of the UK's population increase from 2000 to 2015 is explained by

MIGRANTS and their CHILDREN

These new people have to live somewhere.

The pressure on housing among many other social provisions, is intensified by the

FACT

that, on average,foriegn-born mothers have more children

than women born in Britain

[It is established that with Muslim women it is

Fertility among foreign-born mothers has certainly dropped. YET the high proportion of incomers who are in their reproductive years means the absolute number of babies with foreign mothers continues to rise.

Thus the ONS asserts that in ENGLAND and WALES in 2016 a staggering 28.2 per cent of births were to foreign-born women, 'the highest level on record'.

In 1970, it was 12 per cent.

We've heard about Britain's recent' mini-baby boom', but its primary cause issn't native -born women using the NHS to have IVF in their 40's and bearing triplets. It's not appreciably caused by immigrants from Eastern Europe, either

AS of 2011, Mothers born in Poland averaged 2.1 children-while mothers born in Pakistan had 3.8, and mothers from Somalia had 4.2

So even BREXIT-assuming it actually happens, and actually curtails freedom of movement (ha! on both counts)-may not appreciably constrain foreign increase.

The housing crunch is further complicated by the fact many immigrants settle in the South East, where residential shortages are keenest. The population of Greater London in 2017 was

when Tony Blair opened the gates to permanent visitors.

That's 1.7 million more residents in two decades-an increase of over a quarter, two-thirds of which occurred in the last

An astonishing 58.2per cent of births in London were to foreign-born mothers. (IN the north-west London borough of Brent, 76 per cent were to non-UK-born women.)

While over a third of the babies born in England and Wales had at least one parent born outside the UK, in London that figure was 66.6 per cent: two thirds

None 0f these, if anything understated statistics takes into account how many recent immigrants already occupy existing properties, whose removal from the market helps drive the need for so much additional housing in future. After all, if you took immigration out of the equation, the UK population would level off, before going down.

 

CRISIS

Indeed, most immigration statistics are untrustworthy - because they're

TOO LOW.

London Councils chairman Merrick Cockell told the BBC back in 2008:

'London's population is growing at an even faster rate than these figures suggest, because official data has failed to properly account for the complexities of migration and population churn.'

A Westminster City Council spokeswomen chimed in: 'The statistics leave out a massive

HIDDEN POPULATION

and mean that local authorities are constantly short-changed by

GOVERNMENT

as they still provide vital services to these people, but receive no government funding for them'

Government has

a) - no idea how to track people with every motivation  to keep off the radar, and

b ) every motivation itself to under estimate an unpopular social phenomenon, with a range of consequences

IT CANNOT SEEM TO CONTROL.

Do I sound bigoted?

People can be bigoted, but facts can't be.

The UK's housing crisis rests hand -in-glove with

MASS IMMIGRATION

Without a doubt nimbyism, arcane planning permission rules, Russian oligarchs-all that-make the situation worse.

But effectively, even if Theresa May improbably abracadabra-ed

Britain's foreign aid budget soared by £555million to almost £14billion last year – more than doubling over a decade.

The figures released yesterday will intensify calls for ministers to look again at the pledge introduced by David Cameron to spend 0.7 per cent of national income on overseas handouts each year.

Ministers are facing pressure to give more money to vital services at home such as cancer screening, schools and the NHS.

Council tax bills are rising by the biggest amount for 14 years this year, in part because of the social care crisis – and policing resources are under scrutiny after more than 50 murders in London since the start of the year.

The Treasury is also under pressure to give more money to defence as the threat from Russia intensifies.

Meanwhile, the Home Office faces a backlash over its decision to hand the contract for post-Brexit blue passports to a foreign firm, to save just £10.4million a year.

Despite this, yesterday’s figures showed a jump of 4.2 per cent in the UK’s overseas aid spending in 2017 – taking the foreign budget to a record £13.9billion.

It means the sum has more than doubled from the £6.4billion spent in 2008 and more than quadrupled from the £3.3billion doled out in 2002. Tory MPs last night called for a rethink and urged Penny Mordaunt, the International Development Secretary, to look again at how Britain’s aid cash is distributed.

Foreign aid is calculated according to gross national income, which hit more than £2trillion last year. The budget increased in spite of a string of controversies and critical reports over how the money is spent.

The Daily Mail last year revealed more than £1billion had been given away in cash over the past five years, including via a £300million scheme in Pakistan that has been dogged by claims of corruption.

In 2016, aid officials cancelled a £5.2million project to fund a talk show for Ethiopia’s Spice Girls after the Mail highlighted the case.

And last year, there was fury when it emerged that international rules meant the UK government could not spend foreign aid on British overseas territories hit by hurricane Irma.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, MP for North East Somerset, said last night: ‘Protecting the overseas aid budget continues to be a costly mistake when there are so many other pressing demands on the budget.’

Britain has met the 0.7 per cent target every year since 2013.

 

 

Many MPs last night called for a rethink and urged Penny Mordaunt, the International Development Secretary, to look again at how Britain’s aid cash is distributed

 

Nigel Evans, a Tory member of the Commons international development committee, said: ‘We shouldn’t spend the money just to get rid of it … that is an obscene and grotesque waste of taxpayers’ money … We should have our own sovereign fund for humanitarian emergencies.’

He called for a review of aid rules, adding that taxpayers ‘wonder why it is that why we’ve got money for foreign aid but no money for essentials at home.’

Although most of the aid budget is used by the Department for International Development, other departments are increasingly having to help to get the money out of the door.

In 2017, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, which tackles climate change and supports research in developing countries, spent £769million in aid – an increase of £73million on 2016.

The Department of Health and Social Care spent £101million in 2017, more than double the £46million it was allocated in the previous year. Officials said the boost mainly went on developing vaccines for diseases with ‘epidemic potential’.

Some £557million went to a cross-government fund to spread peace to war-torn nations. But last week, the Independent Commission for Aid Impact said there was a lack of proper checks on whether the Conflict, Stability and Security Fund had a positive impact. Schemes include support to the army and police in countries notorious for human rights abuses.

Some £54.2million was lavished on India, the world’s fastest growing economy, which boasts more billionaires than the UK and itself hands out millions to needy nations. The data also revealed Britain overshot the 0.7 per cent target by £2.2million in 2016.

Conservative MP Peter Bone said: ‘Much of the money is not spent properly … What I want to see is more of that money spent in our own country … The way to improve the situation in developing countries is to trade with them.’

Fellow Tory Andrew Bridgen said: ‘We measure our success by the amount of money we shovel out the door, not how much good we do with it.’

Figures this year showed Britain is one of only seven countries to meet the target.

A Government spokesman said: ‘Our aid budget only increases when the UK economy grows … we are driving value for money to ensure aid cannot be better spent.

‘2017 was an unprecedented year for catastrophic crises and UK aid saved millions of vulnerable people … creating a safer, healthier and more prosperous world for us all, which is in our national interest.’

THERESA May delighted Eurosceptics yesterday with an ambitious road map for BREXIT. The PM extended the hand of friendship to the EU but threatened to walk away if BRUSSELS tried to impose a punitive deal. Jack DOYLE sets out her 12 objectives and analyses her chances of success.

1. CERTAINTY

 WHAT SHE SAID

We will provide certainty where we can. The same rules and laws will apply on the day after BREXIT, as they did before. And the Government will put the final deal to a vote in both houses of Parliament.

CAN SHE DELIVER

By keeping in place-at least initially-all EU laws, Mrs May will provide a degree of continuity and confidence for business. However, as she freely admits she cannot control the outcome of the negotiations. Parliament is highly likely to approve any deal because the alternative will be a chaotic BREXIT.

We  want to guarantee the right of EU citizens who are already living here in Britain, and the rights of British nationals in other member states, as early as we can.

Likely to agreed early on, as long as the EU doesn't want to haggle. Last year Mrs May offered to settle on the rights of three million EU nationals in the UK, and 1.2million Brits on the continent in advance of formals talks- but Angela Merkel refused.

 WHAT SHE SAID

Not only will the government protect the rights of workers' set out in European legislation, we will build on them.

Mrs May is determined to at least preserve protections for workers on low and middle incomes-many of whom voted for BREXIT. Could come under threat if there is no deal., and Britain slashes taxes and regulation to attract business.

8. TRADE WITH EUROPE

As a priority, we will pursue a bold and ambitious free trade agreement with the EU. This should allow for the freest possible trade in goods and services. But I want to make it clear. It cannot mean membership of the single market

The crux of the negotiation. Britain will leave the single market, and with it EU laws and free movement. Instead Mrs May wants a tariff-free trade and customs agreement to stop goods being held up at ports. She ruled out ' vast contributions' to the EU budget, and the only money going to Brussels will be for particular programmes and agencies like Europol. Her huge gamble is to threaten to walk away if the EU attempts to punish Britain

9. GLOBAL TRADE

A global Britain must be free to strike trade agreements with countries outside the EU too. But I also want tariff-free trade with Europe and cross-border trade there to be as frictionless as possible.

Mrs May wants deals with non-EU countries including the US. That would be impossible from inside the customs union, which imposes a uniform tariff on all non-EU countries. It would also make trade Secretary Liam Fox's job redundant.

All of us in Europe face the challenge of cross-border crime, a deadly terrorist threat, and the dangers presented by hostile states.  All of us share interests and values in common, values we want to see projected around the world.

Security and intelligence cooperation and defence cooperation cannot be a formal bargaining chip, but without making it one, Mrs May reminds EU allies of Britain's importance as an ally in fighting terrorism and important status as a military power.

It is in no one's interests for there to be a cliff-edge for business or a threat to stability as we change from our existing relationship to a new partnership with the European Union.

Mrs May wants tranitional arrangements to smooth the process of leaving the EU with specific deals on budget contributions, immigration, trade and customs lasting different periods of time. Securing this as well as securing a final deal within two years is a huge task.

AT LAST, IT IS ALL CLEAR FOR

 BREXIT'S

YESTERDAY  was a HISTORIC DAY for OUR COUNTRY. BY a RESOUNDING MAJORITY of 384, the COMMONS swept away [our  past 45 years of tutelage within an undemocratic-unaccountable-unbearable-corrupt-expensive- strait-jacket Europe.]

 

THIS was a historic day for our country. At 7.30pm yesterday by a resounding majority of 384, the Commons swept away the last serious obstacle to freeing Britain from the chains that have bound us to an unelected, unaccountable Brussels for 45 YEARS.

True, we can still expect dirty tricks from the 114 who, to their shame, voted  against implementing the

PEOPLE'S WILL.

Of these , this newspaper will not waste ink on cursing SNP members, whose fantasies of SCOTLAND as an independent EU nation state gave them a spurious excuse for defying the UK majority.

AS for the rest, no criticism is too harsh for those Labour MPs who represent solidly Brexiteer constituencies, but voted to

REMAIN.

They deserve everything coming to them at the next election.

So, too, do the creeps who in 2015 backed the call for a binding referendum, but voted last night against implementing its result.

Among these, none can beat the monstrous hypocrisy of

NICK CLEGG

-that flip-flopping representative of the moneyed elite, suckled on the [thirsty] breast of Brussels.

Faced with the possible imposition (illegally) of a E. U. Constitution this  article contemplating our own U.K. Constitution (English Constitution), is especially topical.

Constitutional Principles of Power and Remedy.

The Constitution is specifically intended, indeed designed to limit the powers of the state with respect to the people. The Constitution sets a standard upon which the performance of governance may be measured and contested and to provide remedy if abused.

The whole constitution originates its authority from

COMMON LAW

Supremacy resides in the

LAW and PEOPLE

NOT THE

CROWN or PARLIAMENT.

It is a matter of constitutional principle and legal fact that,

THE LAW IS SUPREME

The rule of law is the antithesis of arbitrary power. Integral with this, is the system of jury trial. It places the power of law enforcement in the

HANDS of the PEOPLE.

This the most vital safeguard against DESPOTISM.

The English Constitution's function is to

PROTECT the

"RIGHTS and LIBERTIES

 of ENGLISHMEN".

These are the 'BIRTHRIGHT' of the PEOPLE'

[In 2016 one can see how successive governments have by gradualism watered down these rights with even attempts to replace jury trial by trial by judge only on the grounds of speed and saving resources. The people in the main have been, amiss in not being vigilant to the protection of THEIR CONSTITUTION. In just a few weeks on the 23 June,2016 they have a choice whether to vote to leave the EU and regain THEIR LAW-THEIR CONSTITUTION-THEIR FREE COUNTRY. or REMAIN in an ALIEN COLLECTIVIST AND CORRUPT UNDEMOCRATIC EU with NO PROTECTION of MAGNA CARTA of 1215 and BILL OF RIGHTS of 1688 and NO ENGLISHMAN'S ' RIGHTS and LIBERTIES' to be passed on to FUTURE GENERATIONS.]

The fundamental rights and liberties are listed in the preamble of the Coronation Oath Act of 1688 which declares that  the oath is taken for the purpose of

" Maintaining our spiritual and civil rights and properties"

It is a contract with the people which makes it the permanent duty of the CROWN, and the CROWN in both GOVERNMENT and PARLIAMENT.

This contracts the Monarch to govern only according to the STATUTE, COMMON LAW, and the CUSTOM and to 'CAUSE LAW and JUSTICE with MERCY to be used in all JUDGEMENTS'.

All power of governance is vested in the CROWN.

The two Houses of Parliament may upon their concurrence offer bills for ROYAL ASSENT.

A BILL is not ENACTED until it has been authorised by the SOVEREIGN POWER.

Whilst the enacting power (a royal prerogative) of Royal Assent is entirely vested with the monarch it is contracted ONLY TO BE USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONSTITUTIONAL LAW.  This is a limitation and essential safeguard to protect the people from any over mighty governance  [such as Tony Blair's and Gordon Brown's NEW LABOUR and since DAVE'S PARTY]

 It was used  to defeat the Divine Right of Kings; a claim of absolute power by the Stuart monarchs.  The OATH ascertains the SUPREMACY of the LAW, not the supremacy of CROWN or of PARLIAMENT.

There is certainly no Divine Right of Politicians.

The Coronation contract is of the Crown owing allegiance to the Constitution. The PEOPLE give ALLEGIANCE to the CROWN.

Here is a system of mutual protection for there is a constitutional interdependence.

The MAGNA CARTA

made provision for the PEOPLE to use ANY MEANS including FORCE if the CROWN is found to be in BREACH.

THE RIGHT OF RESISTANCE IS THE ULTIMATE REMEDY...

That which constitutionally binds the Monarch is a restriction upon Her Majesty, Her Government and all Parliamentary power.  The Monarch may do no wrong, but should she refuse by her negative power( the right to withhold assent) to

'LET WRONG BE DONE.'

[Millions of patriots have been waiting over four decades for:-

'Right to be Done!']

Sir William Blackstone confirms this. Whilst the monarch accepts the advice of ministers, they must only advise to do that which COMPLIES with the CONSTITUTION.  Plainly NO MONARCH is FREE to ASSENT to ADVICE that CONFLICTS with the CONSTITUTION in FORCE.

There is no authority in Parliament to pass any power of governance in England to those who hold or owe no allegiance. [such as the EU]

 There is no constitutional authority for Parliament to deliberately breach the constitutional laws by new   conflicting enactment.

 There is a natural duty resulting from the logic of our constitutional law to debate and resolve conflicts, if necessary by prior repeal.

 We must put an end to this form of 'legal' abuse, particularly through the misapplication of party politics.

 Most but not all of our constitution is written:- the Magna Carta, the Petition of Rights, the Declaration of Rights, the Bill of Rights, the Act of Settlement and the Acts of Union etc. It has evolved over centuries with the expenditure of much blood. It has been abused and corrected many times. It was finally settled by the Glorious Revolution of 1688/9.

The Judicial function is to be the independent arbiter between party and party or party and government under the terms of our constitutional law.  The courts are bound to declare upon the constitutionality of an Act where it may prove to be an action of unconstitutional governance. The great examples of the Magna Carta, the Petition 1628, the Declaration & the Bill of Rights 1688/9 make this duty of the court utterly plain.

Judgement may only be given in accordance with the constraints of constitutional laws in force.  At all times the presumption of law and justice in mercy be upheld and used  in all judgements. This is the trust sand the pre-eminent public policy reposed in the judiciary.

The right of petition to the Monarch is an appeal direct to the source of power, the Monarch is under OATH and at LAW, bound to provide REMEDY. Where there are RIGHTS there are REMEDIES. Politicians and Parliament must abide by the terms of reference and DUTY to the CONSTITUTION.

A fixed and certain standard with protection and remedy are the true purpose of the Constitution.

WE MUST RECLAIM OUR CONSTITUTION AND THE RULE OF LAW FROM THE SUPPOSED DIVINE RIGHT OF OUR POLITICIANS.

[We ask how did it come to pass that the JUDICIARY did not PROTECT the CONSTITUTION from the illegal actions of PARLIAMENT and the Crown with the disclosures in 2001 under the 30 year rule from the Public Record Office at

 which revealed the CONSPIRACY of the FOREIGN OFFICE to prevent the PEOPLE from hearing the TRUTH of their TREACHERY and BETRAYAL. Under the 1969 THE VIENNA TREATY CONVENTION on the  LAW of TREATIES  there are two key provisions which authorise a signatory power to abrogate a bilateral or multilateral treaty unilaterally, without giving the stipulated notice.

[In the Daily Mail on Friday the 18th February 2005 a timely article by their columnist Andrew Alexander on the most important issue to be raised in a true democracy, which is Freedom of Speech for without it, a People are deprived of the very means to find the TRUTH.

 

Though at times the means to achieve this may lead to differences of view which after all is what it all means to speak one’s mind.  There is already protection in British law to curb those who wish to encourage violence. Affray and disorder. When others put this basic right of comment under threat then who is there to defend the Principle of Free Speech.]

Ken Livingstone should not apologise.  He may not be everyone’s cup of tea, certainly not mine, but the issue has now become one of freedom of speech.  The possibility that a government-appointed body could suspend him from office is one of the most outrageous things I have ever heard.

What he said to an Evening Standard reporter was something no gentleman would say.  But so what?   Politics, local or national, has never been distinguished by gentlemanly behaviour and never will be.   Newspapers can play it rough, too.  Both sides expect to give and take hard knocks.

 The real villain of the piece is an item of legislation entitled-soporifically-The Local Authorities (Model Code of Conduct)  (England) Order 2001.  Under ‘General Obligations’, we find the astonishing subsection, which says that councillors ‘must treat others with respect’.

Note the word ‘must’- not ‘should’ or ‘would be wise to’ or ‘wouldn’t be nice if all councillors were to’.  No, politeness is mandatory.

Consider also the ludicrous word  ‘others’, not voters, officials, fellow councillors or anything so narrow. ‘Others’ can mean anyone on the planet, from David Beckham to the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem.

How on earth, you may wonder, did this preposterous threat to free speech creep in?  It seems that when the legislation in question was introduced, the Conservatives concentrated their fire on the excessive regulation of parish councils, which was then being established.

The Tory promise was that, if it returned to power they would abolish the bureaucratic Standards Board for England (SBE)_ a collection of nonentities chosen by the Government-and leave sorting out of councillors’ problems about conflicts of interest and the like to the Local Government Ombudsman.

The Opposition made no move to oppose the wretched 2001 Order when it came along-no protests, not even a demand for a vote.

This sinister threat of censorship, which should be fought to the last ditch, passed on a nod, leaving the SBE [Standards Board for England] with the power to bar someone from office for up to five years for breaching the code.

The matter of Livingstone’s words has been referred to the SBE by the Board of Deputies of British Jews, a disgraceful move.  It does British Jewry’s reputation no good to have the Deputies leading a campaign against freedom of speech.

Livingstone’s remark about a reporter behaving like a concentration camp guard has, also absurdly been dubbed ‘racist’.

It may have played harshly on the target’s sensitivities, but by no stretch of the imagination did it belittle or attack a race.

The only thing this sort of exaggeration shows is how far the rot of ‘anti-racism’ has taken us.  We are becoming like the U.S. where the obsession about ‘race’ has reached the proportions of a national mania.

 

No doubt, we shall hear the commonplace retort from those accused of trying to curb free speech that of course they are all in favour of freedom, except where it is abused.  This is nonsensical view.

A Freedom, which cannot be abused, is not worth having.

The threat to Livingstone comes in the wake of another threat to free speech in the Government’s new legislation to ban remarks, which stir up religious hatred.  Freedom of speech, if it means what it says, involves the right:

To Irritate

 

Annoy

 

Dismay

 

And Shock

 

Anyone who Listens.

The only sensible limitation should be on speech designed to lead to violence, affray or disorder.  But that has always been enshrined in British law anyway.

I can’t help recalling from my youth, in relation to this whole issue, the harmless joke in one of those monologues wonderfully recited by [that great entertainer and loveable gentleman] Stanley Holloway-the Lion and Albert, and all the rest.

 As some readers may remember’ one explained how the barons of old descended on King John when he was having tea’ on Runningmede Island in t’Thames’ and made him sign the Magna Carta…’but his writing in places was sticky and thick through dipping his pen in the jam’.

 

The verse concludes:

 

‘In England today we can do what we like

So long as we do what we’re told’

 

How I laughed then, I would not have believed that this joke could one day be transmuted to:

‘And that is why we can talk as we like

So long as we talk as we’re told.’

A final touch of absurdity is added by the claim that Livingstone’s remark may jeopardise London’s attempt to host the Olympic Games.  If it did, it would be one good outcome.  The cost, the upset, the dislocation, the sheer waste of effort if London is chosen is too appalling to contemplate.

 

But if his comment really threatened London’s Olympic bid, it would show what a silly solemn people make up the International Olympic Committee.

 

It might have been a nice thing if Livingstone had originally apologised for having been gratuitously rude.  But the issue has gone beyond that now.  For him to retreat in the face of a threat to freedom of speech is in no one’s interest.

They are in full-on retreat over the 'appalling' treatment of Britain's Windrush generation of immigrants today.

MPs queued up to voice fury at the plight of long-term residents who have lost their everyday rights as Britons - with the government admitting some might have been deported in error.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd apologised for the threat to deport them - and launched a furious attack on her own department for the blunder.

And Theresa May U-turned and agreed to meet Jamaican leaders attending a Commonwealth summit in London to discuss the treatment of the post-war immigrants. 

The PM's spokesman also said the premier 'regretted' the treatment of the Windrush generation and Home Office guidance was being changed. 

Ms Rudd  launched an outspoken attack on her officials telling the Commons she is concerned Home Office officials 'lose sight of the individual'.

The shift came as immigration minister Caroline Nokes admitted some of the cases were 'appalling' and people had been deported in error - although her boss Amber Rudd later cast doubt on the assertion. 

Communities Secretary Sajid Javid has expressed 'deep concern', while International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt admitted the government must do a 'better job' of dealing with issue.

The Coming Home to Jamaica leaflet warns that Jamaicans can be hostile to those speaking in a foreign accent. 

And it urges them to pick up a local dialet to blend in. 

It stats: 'Try to be ‘Jamaican’ – use local accnts and dialect (overseas accents can attract unwanted attention).

'I do not want any of the Commonwealth citizens who are here legally to be impacted in the way they have,' she said. 

'Frankly, some of the ways they have been treated has been wrong, has been appalling and I am sorry. 

'That's why I am setting up a new area in my department to ensure that we have a completely new approach to how their situation is regularised.' 

And she laid the blame for the blunder with officials in her department, telling MPs: 'I am concerned that the Home Office has become too concerned with policy and strategy, and sometimes lose sight of the individual.

'This is about individuals, and we have seen the individual stories, and they have been, some of them, terrible to hear, and that is why I have acted.' 

She added: 'I am not aware of any specific cases of a person being removed in these circumstances.

'That is why I have asked the high commissioners if they know of any, that they should bring it to me.

Mrs Rudd said she was not certain whether any of the Windrush generation had been deported

'And I would ask anybody here if they know of any such circumstances, they should bring them to the Home Office.'

Ms Rudd said she would be meeting high commissioners from Commonwealth countries this week to find out whether any people had been wrongly removed from the UK. 

She made the remarks after coming in for heavy criticism from MPs in the Commons.

David Lammy, Labour MP for Tottenham, said it was 'inhumane and cruel' for so many in the Windrush generation 'to have suffered so long in this condition'.

He added: 'This is a day of national shame and it has come about because of a hostile environment policy that was begun under her Prime Minister.

'Let us call it as it is. If you lay down with dogs, you get fleas, and that is what has happened with this far right rhetoric in this country.'

The Commonwealth heads of government meeting is being held in London this week and Guy Hewitt, High Commissioner for Barbados, told the Guardian: 'We did make a request to the summit team for a meeting to be held between the Prime Minister and the Commonwealth Caribbean heads of government, and regrettably they have advised us that that is not possible.'

Albert Thompson, who has been denied life saving treatment on the NHS

Albert Thompson, 63, has lived in London for 44 years - but told he must pay £54,000 for life saving treatment on the NHS.

For three decades Mr Thompson worked, supported a family, and was a head mechanic for a string of garages, and paid his taxes.

His mother arrived in the UK from Jamaica in the Sixties to come and work her as a nurse. 

He had surgery for prostate cancer in January last year, before NHS eligibility rules were tightened, and was to begin radiotherapy at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London, last November. 

But when he arrived for his first NHS radiotherapy session following the removal of his prostate, he was told he was not entitled to free treatment. 

It is because the Home Office can find no record of Mr Thompson, who was born in Jamaica, in its files. 

He lost the Caribbean passport he arrived in the UK with some years ago. And without a British passport - which he's never had and cannot not get because there is no documentary proof of his arrival here as a teenager in 1973, landlords will not house him and the NHS have told his he can't have treatment. 

He said: 'At present I'm left in limbo. It feels like I've been left to die because the job hasn't been finished. I get depressed, stressed out, anxious.

'I used to have a life, to work, to go out, enjoy myself. I had a nice car, a home. I went to the cinema, dancing. But that's the past. I have to think about the present and it's hard to come to terms with. I've got no money.

'I'm very angry with the Government that I'm in this position. I'm here legally, but they're asking me to prove I'm British.' 

Mr Thompson worked until 2008 when he was diagnosed with the blood cancer lymphoma and an acute back problem; since then he has been too ill to work. 

He was evicted from his rented flat because his landlord wanted to sell it. Tenants must now produce a British passport in order to rent accommodation. As Albert — not his real name — does not have a passport, he could not find a home.

'I was on the streets for three weeks. I had to beg for food. I felt ashamed. I just asked people in shops if they had anything spare.'

After three weeks, Albert had managed to secure a room through a homeless charity, St Mungo's. He still lives in that accommodation now. 

 

New rules require documentary evidence of the right to be here, which many Windrush children do not have as anyone who arrived in the UK from a Commonwealth country before 1971 was given indefinite leave to remain, meaning many did not apply for a British passport

In a growing scandal, children of the Windrush migrants, named after the ship which brought the first generation of workers to Britain from the West Indies in 1948, have fallen victim to an immigration loophole that has left them in a legal limbo. 

Despite having lived here and paid taxes for decades, some have lost their homes, jobs and benefits, been denied NHS treatment and threatened with deportation.

Anyone who arrived in the UK from a Commonwealth country before 1971 was given indefinite leave to remain by that year's Immigration Act. But many never applied for a British passport.

Experienced special needs teaching assistant Michael Braithwaite lost his job after his employers ruled that he was an illegal immigrant - despite living here for more than 50 years.

He arrived in Britain from Barbados in 1961, and had worked at a north London primary school for over 15 years when a routine check on his immigration status revealed he did not have an up to date identity document.

His employer got in touch with him to tell him that without a biometric card he could not continue to be employed. He lost his full time job in 2017, after the local authority ruled he needed to submit proof he had the right to live in the UK.

A biometric card is a residence permit issued to non-British residents, with details of their immigration status 

Mr Braithwaite attended primary school and secondary school in Britain, and worked continuously since leaving school.  He married in London and has three British children and five grandchildren.

He said: 'It made me feel like I was an alien. I almost fell apart with the stress. I never applied for a British passport. We thought we were British.'

Enny Choudhury, Braithwaite's lawyer, from the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, said: 'For almost one year the Home Office has failed to issue the biometric card, without which he cannot work or move on with his life, causing uncertainty and distress.'  

Tough new rules were introduced four years ago to weed out illegal immigrants and prevent them renting a home, working, opening a bank account and holding a driving licence. 

The rules require documentary evidence of the right to be here. But many Windrush-era children do not have such proof.

Securing a residence permit requires sending the Home Office up to four pieces of documentary evidence for every year spent in the UK – an almost impossible task.

Ms Mordaunt told BBC radio 4's Today programme: 'People who are in that situation, there is absolutely no question of their right to remain, and their right to gain access to services such as healthcare.

'What clearly needs to happen is we need to do a better job with the process that these individuals are having to go through.

'People should not be concerned about this - they have the right to stay and we should be reassuring them of that.' 

The Daily Mail has launched a campaign in support of the Windrush generation.

We are calling for a lower burden of proof for those who arrived here before 1971, and more flexibility shown to those who have lived here and paid taxes for several decades but were never naturalised.

Grandmother Paulette Wilson has finally given leave to remain after a two-and-a-half year struggle

Grandmother Paulette Wilson, from Wolverhampton, was threatened with deportation, despite living here for 50 years. 

This month she finally received leave to remain in Britain after a two-and-a-half-year struggle. 

The 61-year-old was denied benefits, access to healthcare and refused permission to work.

In 2015 she received a letter saying she had 'no right' to be in the country, telling he she had to register each month in Solihull, and she even spent a week in the immigration detention centre in Yarl's Wood in October. 

Mrs Wilson was taken to London Heathrow Airport and threatened with deportation to Jamaica, where she has not returned since leaving age 10.

But now she has received a biometric residency permit, confirming her settled status in the UK and bringing her a step nearer to gaining British citizenship. 

She said: 'I've never done anything wrong; how could I be an illegal?

'It would be nice to get an apology from the government saying: we are sorry we put you though this.'

Paulette will now have to complete a naturalisation process to become a British citizen.

Her worried daughter Natalie Barnes says her mum is still traumatised by her experience.

She added: 'The experience of being in the detention centre won't ever leave her.'

Research by academics at the Oxford University-based Migration Observatory suggests that up to 57,000 people who arrived in the UK before 1971 could be subject to such appalling treatment.

Labour MP David Lammy said that 'what is going on is grotesque, immoral and inhumane'. The former minister, whose Guyanese parents were Windrush migrants, added: 'It is a stain on our nation's conscience and the Home Secretary and Prime Minister must act urgently to right this historic wrong.

'After the Second World War we invited the Windrush generation over as citizens to help rebuild our country, and now their children are being treated like criminals.'

A petition is calling for anyone who came to the UK as a child between 1948 and 1971 to have their rights confirmed by the Government. You can add your name to the petition here.

A load of unholy cobblers: When QUENTIN LETTS like all Church volunteers was forced to attend an abuse prevention course he entered a chilling world where everyone is assumed to be evil

Last Saturday, when there was no shortage of lawn-mowing to be done, I was obliged to spend four hours with a former detective. If that sounds alarming, it was, though not for the reason you might suppose.

The retired female cop, who in the name of Christian discretion we will call Wendy, was the ‘safeguarding officer’ of our local diocese of the Church of England. Her creed? ‘I assume nothing,’ she said. ‘I believe no one. I tend to suspect the worst in people.’

As deputy churchwarden and a member of our village’s parochial church council, or PCC (a group of about 15 volunteers), I had been ordered to undergo Wendy’s C1 Learning and Development Framework Safeguarding Core Module.

Apologies for the jargon. I am afraid there is going to be rather a lot of that. And this from an Anglican hierarchy that has largely abandoned Thomas Cranmer’s Book of Common Prayer because ‘no one understands it any more’.

For the next four hours, my fellow church volunteers, one aged 100 and one a septuagenarian Austrian countess, and I were battered and splattered by gibberish. It was like standing in front of some muckspreader loaded with stinking bureaucrat-ese.

The thrust of Wendy’s message was that there could be a pederast behind every churchyard yew tree. Just as station Tannoys command us to ‘see it, say it, sorted’ and report any suspect package, Wendy told us to be alert to all forms of abuse — sexual, inter-marital, even abuse of vulnerable churchgoers by over-zealous preachers — throughout our communities.

‘Listen, hear, pass it on. But don’t ever go into the judgment bit,’ intoned Wendy.

If we heard neighbours squabbling at night, children with bruises or a church member taking a lot of photos on his mobile, we should sidle up to the authorities and submit a report. We should not ourselves reach any conclusion, mind you. We must allow ‘the experts to carry out an investigation’.

The Stasi secret police in communist East Germany used to get citizens to snoop on their neighbours. Now this message is being pushed by the Church of England.

So it was on Saturday that, after introducing ourselves like attendees at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting (actually, most of us already knew one another), we were given leaflets about safeguarding strategy and action plans, a diocesan working group, independent safeguarding audits and about the team (modern clerics love the word ‘team’) of ‘expert safeguarding professionals’ at Church House, in London.

There was a list of safeguarding policy and practice guidance, publications such as ‘Responding to Domestic Abuse’ and ‘Responding Well to those who have been Sexually Abused’.

We were urged to mug up on ‘managing safeguarding concerns or allegations against church officers’ and forcefully told we should ‘formally adopt national safeguarding policy and practice guidelines on a yearly basis and display a safeguarding policy statement in a prominent place’ at our place of worship.
 

Look closely enough at the notice board outside your parish church and you may spot it: alongside the yellowing advert for last year’s bring-and-buy there will be your church’s mandatory small print about how it’s on the lookout for kiddy-fiddlers.

Let’s hope the wind doesn’t rip it away, or the church’s insurance policy may be rendered invalid.

On Wendy’s course it was drummed into us that the Church’s main insurance company will pay out on claims only if PCCs have followed the national safeguarding policy and practice guidelines, as enforced by the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016.

The lawyers and their friends in modern officialdom (and the insurance business) have plainly got the system royally gummed-up.

The modern Church hierarchy may not be much good at inspiring worshippers, it may have a banjo-Billy tin ear for hymns and it may have presided over a catastrophic slump in churchgoing, but when it comes to making sure volunteers darn well do as they’re told and ensuring that a fortune is spent on bureaucrats who are paid much more than vicars and organists, it is horribly efficient.

Had I refused to attend this course, I would have been sacked, insofar as any volunteer can be sacked. I would have been told that, under recent laws which sailed through Parliament with minimal debate, I could no longer be a church ‘officer’. That term applies not only to clergy and professional employees of the Church, but also to lay volunteers.

There are some 12,500 parishes in England and each has a PCC. The Church could not say, but there are probably about 180,000 PCC members in the country, all unpaid, most of them (except for me) kindly, positive-minded, patient people.

As Wendy churned through her litany of modern sex-crime tendencies and extreme instances of abuse by churchgoers, some of my fellow attendees started to twitch.

OK, one or two seemed prepared to become unpaid snoopers for the professionalised nanny state, squealing on neighbours who were unkind to their wives or who left their children alone at home when they went to the pub or to work.

But others, in the politest way, started to bridle. The Austrian countess told me afterwards, rather perplexed: ‘I thought the English believed in minding their own business.’

Wendy said we should never let volunteers (such as flower arrangers) work alone in the church. If unaccompanied, she said, they could lay themselves open to false allegations. Visitors might invent some story that a volunteer had abused them.

And that would lead to the police swooping in and arresting Mrs Boggins! ‘Gotcha, sunshine, you’re coming to the nick,’ says PC Plod.

‘Oh dear, Constable,’ says Mrs Boggins, ‘do you mind if I just put this sprig of gypsophila in the oasis before we are taken to the high-security unit for suspected sex offenders?’

Have the Justin Welbys of this world ever run the volunteer side of a church? If so, they might know it is far from easy to find enough souls to cover the basics, let alone to ‘double up on your rotas, guys’, as Wendy instructed us.

Until recently, the only risk- assessing we did was trying to calculate if our little church would go bust in the next few months. Most of the money we raise (about £8,000 a year from collections, fetes, etc) goes to the diocese, to pay for the Church hierarchy.

Here is the same Church spending millions on safeguarding jobsworths who tell us to report suspect activity and thus create more work for their self-perpetuating bureaucracy.

As a mere lay person, I am no authority on morality, but I’d call that wicked.

How can a Church built on faith allow one of its representatives to boast, as Wendy did, ‘I believe no one and I suspect the worst in people’ and to tell us to keep our eyes perpetually peeled for ‘Mr Nasty’?

Wendy spoke approvingly of a possibility that the Church will soon tell priests no longer to do solo home visits, such as when they give Communion to the dying or offer spiritual consolation.

She wanted such visits to be accompanied to prevent accusations of rape or theft being made against a priest.

The ancient rite of the confessional may soon be trumped by the demands of today’s managerialists. That is appalling.

Unless, that is, the decent, push-us-only-so-far PCC members — the backbone of Anglican England — go on strike. Without its volunteers, the Church of England would close in a week. We PCC members maintain the buildings, organs, pews, graveyards.

We spread the word, find the organists and raise the funds. Yet now we are being told to waste our spare free time attending almost meaningless safeguarding courses, just to tick bureaucratic boxes.

I know several PCC members in our diocese, including a churchwarden who is a pillar of the county, who intend to quit rather than succumb to any safeguarding course. ‘The bishop can get stuffed,’ I have been told.

Wendy is demanding that I soon surrender to another course, and then repeat the whole exercise in three years’ time.

I love our church. Despite a wobbly faith, I have a desire to serve our parish. But if I have to listen to church representatives spouting the doctrine of politically correct, self-enriching bureaucrats, I’m not sure being a PCC member will be worth the altar candle.

THE BUDGET FOR THE EUROPEAN CONSTITUTION WAS $5.0 BILLION

 

An account held by Credit Suisse in Zurich, labelled the ‘SBC’ Charcol Account, held a total of some $470 billion when last reviewed by sources.  These funds were originally derived from Nazi funds and assets, are routinely used to pay top politicians and officials to sign successive European Collective treaties- the latest being the so-called ‘European Constitution’.

The budget set aside from the ‘SBC’Charcol Account and to be distributed from the Credit Suisse disbursement account for the latest ‘update’ of the ‘rolling  European Collective Treaty’ was $5.0billion- $2.5 billion being payable in Euros to the participants from the 25 EU countries.

On the finalisation of the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC), which framed the text of the Treaty, and a further $2.5 billion payable in Euros on ratification.  This tranche is currently the subject of much dissension.

For each national cadre of key negotiator, therefore, the total set aside  was $100 million per tranche.  The chief negotiators of each EU country, plus selected officials were each to be paid from the national pot of $ 100 million, whish equates to roughly $75 million per corrupted European Union country.

Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian Prime Minister, was allegedly initially offered $50 million.  being an extremely wealthy man, he departed for the weekend in question in July 2004, following conclusion of the IGC, having indicated to those concerned that he was insulted by such a figure, and that $100million would be nearer the mark.  In the event, following an allowance for his wife, he was allegedly paid $75 million, according to sources.

Tony Blair allegedly received $75 million, which was paid into an offshore bank account held in Belize, the former British Honduras.  There, official eyebrows were naturally raised at the Central bank of Belize, where we notice that all of a sudden, the official reserves of foreign exchange jumped from $49.72 million in February 2005, to $164.53 million in March [2005]

Since the corrupt payment ‘due’ at the completion of the IGC will have been remitted in or about July 2004, this may suggest that the funds have subsequently (in March 2005) been taken into the foreign exchange reserves of the local central bank, so that their actual ownership can be disguised, a ‘new form’ of money-laundering: through a central bank!

THE VIENNA TREATY CONVENTION

Under the 1969 Vienna Convention on the

Law of Treaties

there are two key provisions which authorize a signatory power to abrogate a bilateral or multilateral treaty unilaterally, without giving the stipulated notice:

WHERE corruption has been demonstrated in respect of procuring the

in the first place, or in respect of any dimension of its implementation.
