Cromwell's Breach With
Parliament in September,1654
...In every Government
there must be something fundamental-like Magna Carta,
which should be unalterable. There was something special
in this speech very like the harangues of Elizabeth the
First to her independent-minded Parliaments...But there
is something of the tone of Parliament's apologies to
James I .noticeable in the Protector's reference to
Magna Carta. What was fundamental in the government of
England? That had been the issue of the whole
struggle of the century; and Cromwell's vision of
"healing and settling" could not yet be realised,
because men were not yet anything like agreed upon the
point... At the end of five months, reckoning four
weeks to a month - that is to say, the earliest date at
which the constitution allowed him to do so-Cromwell
dissolved Parliament. "Instead of peace and
settlement... dissettlement and division," , he told
them, had been the sole product of their sittings. [AS
in our day when the issue of FREEDOM is uppermost in
patriotic minds.]
