MoD refuse to provide suitable armoured vehicles as casualties in Afghanistan reach 10 killed -three this month.

TWO members of Britain’s Special Forces were killed in a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan.

They died after a four -hour firefight with Taliban rebels who had attacked [their poorly armoured] vehicles with rocket-propelled grenades.

The attack raises the British death toll in Afghanistan to ten, with three killed this month as fighting intensifies.

The deaths come as soldiers’ families, MPs and former commanders warned that British soldiers are being sent into danger without ADEQUATE PROTECTION.

Full details of the incident were not released. British sources in Afghanistan, however, suggested the men were travelling in a lightly armoured ‘snatch’ Land Rover, which troops say are seen as ‘soft targets’

[The dug-in attitude of the MoD in NOT giving the British troops the necessary equipment is still before us even in June 2006 after the obvious examples over the last few years in Iraq where our soldiers lives could have been saved IF provided with the correct protective vehicles.

Their indifference is criminal and the names of those in the MoD who are slacking in their DUTY to PROTECT our brave soldiers should be publicly castigated until they relent and provide the goods.]

They [The land Rovers] cost about £50,000, only a quarter of the cost of heavier, armoured vehicles.

[As we have said before on our bulletin board -if the MoD had to pay each of the families of each soldier killed a

£1,000,000

-compensation- (though obviously the families would NOT put a price on their loved ones) the MoD would think twice about allowing Land Rovers to be used in the war zone.

It would be poetical justice if members of the MoD are forced to visit the war zone and use the Land Rover as their means of travel and should they suffer a mortal wound then after all the message may just sink in back in the Defence Ministry.]

The Taliban pounced in the troubled Sangin Valley, part of Helmand province in the south-west of Afghanistan. The identities of the men killed were not released.

Apparent confirmation that they were Special Forces came in a statement from Defence Minister Des Browne who said they were not part of the main British Task Force in the region.

[Well we don’t understand what the Defence Minister is trying to convey but would it be that the deaths of the Special Forces are a separate concern and do not affect the general concern of casualties in the British Forces. Every death is a tragedy to a family at home and to their colleagues in the field of battle.]

Both the SAS and the SBS have been operating in the area - some attached to an American-led force hunting Al Qaeda mastermind Osama Bin Laden [why doesn’t George Bush ask the Bin Laden family where his old friend is at the present moment it would save a great deal of time looking for him] and Taliban leader Mullah Omar.

The deaths add to fears that British troops are being sucked into all-out combat in Afghanistan [Not as Tony Blair says about our troops concentrating on meeting with the hearts and minds of the Afghan people] despite the fact their mission is meant to be limited to helping the reconstruction of the country and stamping out the drug trade.

But they are facing a resurgent Taliban backed by heavily armed local warlords, who are determined to hold on to lucrative poppy fields and want all foreigners out.

With Britain taking the lead role in NATO’s International Security Assistance Force [courtesy of Tony’s great buddy George one will arrange the numerous speech meetings in the USA when Blair finally resigns] the troops are locked into a daily war with the Taliban.

The Britons are understood to have been able to leave their vehicle shortly before the rockets hit and a lengthy firefight followed in which five Taliban were killed.

One British soldier in a rescue party was wounded but his injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

At least 18 soldiers have been killed in attacks on ‘snatch’ vehicles in Iraq.

Yesterday Mr Browne told MPs their use is to be reviewed after strong criticism from the father of a soldier killed last year.

[Well this is JUNE 2006 - why hasn’t the instruction been carried out -or is it yet another example of SPIN in order to give a positive look but without substance?]

Few details of the Afghan incident were available last night while the families of those killed were being informed.

A detachment from the Parachute Regiment, including Gurkhas, which was sent as a Quick Reaction Force to reinforce the Special Forces patrol, also suffered causalities.

The wounded soldier is believed to be part of that force. The British deaths follow that of Captain Jim Phillipson, 29, of 7 Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, who was killed in a clash with suspected Taliban forces in Helmand this month. Two other British soldiers were seriously injured in that incident.

Ten British servicemen and 313 Americans have died in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led Coalition toppled the Taliban in 2001.

Captain Drew Gibson, the British spokesman in Afghanistan, said yesterday’s attack had come ‘out of the blue’ in an area that had been ‘quiet’ in previous weeks.

[Well the Taliban know everything that is taking place in THEIR country -it is the Coalition forces with inadequate forces and equipment who will always suffer as the Captain so aptly described it the Taliban can hit them ‘out of the blue’.

From what we can see it is the Taliban seeking out our forces rather than the other way round and when they let our forces see them they already have our brave boys in their sights.]

He added [Captain Gibson]:

‘Its going to take time in this place. We can’t wave a magic wand. We need to prove that we are here to do the right thing and support the Afghan people.

[We suspect it was the MoD who suggested the above explanation but it is as usual A LOAD OF TOSH! to think that what failed so dismally in Iraq should mysteriously happen in a more deadly environment with the livelihood of the Afghan people - at stake - its poppy fields, which they will defend against the invaders. As many eminent past commanders have stated it is very difficult terrain to fight in and would take an overpowering force to bring some control to the country and it would lead to an even greater death toll for the Coalition forces.]

The review of the use of ‘snatch’ Land Rovers in Iraq comes after fierce criticism fro Roger Bacon, 63, whose son Matthew, an Army intelligence officer, was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle last September. [2005]

Mr Bacon said:

‘He had no protection at all from roadside bombs even though it was a known risk.

‘If they had used properly armoured vehicles, British soldiers who had been killed in Iraq would have been alive today and Matthew may have been among them.’

Tory Defence spokesman Mark Harper said:

‘We must make sure that our troops are given the best equipment and protection possible so that they can deliver a successful mission at minimum risk to themselves.

Our troops quite rightly demand and are entitled to the same level of protection as their American colleagues.’

[Well we have heard something similar before -in fact six months ago and NOTHING has been done to replace the Land Rovers with superior armoured vehicles.

As we have previously indicated until each soldier killed is costing the MoD

£1,000,000

compensation to their next -of - kin the MoD will NOT consider the flesh and blood of our brave soldiers worth the cost of a much-needed armoured vehicle.

Countries would not be so quick to embark on illegal wars if they had to pay substantial compensation-though to many of the next -of- kin they would rather have their son or daughter.
