in the Euro-elections. [AFTER THE EXCELLENT RESULTS IN THE EURO ELECTION IN MAY 2014 IT IS VITAL THAT THIS LAST CHANCE TO OBTAIN OUR HISTORICAL FREEDOM MUST EXTEND TO THE GENERAL ELECTION IN MAY-2015.]
I AM a conservative, [-ditto-] I vote for conservative policies but I have for so long been let down by the Conservative Party which has been compliant as we have been drawn into ever closer union with our fellow European Union member states, treaty by treaty. we have only once been given our say on EU membership and that was by a Labour Government in 1975. is it right that the generations unable to vote then are constrained by that ancient vote, which only referred to an economic arrangement? For some time now, in anticipation of the next General Election delivering change to a Conservative administration, the media ( Financial Times, Spectator and Andrew Marr for example) have been sponsoring the idea that David Cameron is a hardened Eurosceptic [REMEMBER! this article was written in the Winter of 2008/9] BUT IS HE? Past evidence would indicate a short period of tenure if that were so. WE MUST NOT FORGET how Lady Thatcher was removed subsequent to her Bruges Speech, nor Iain Duncan Smith after his in Prague. Discarding the previous robust party policy of repatriation of fishing rights, appointing a Europhile head of candidate selection and remaining in the federalist European People's party despite promising NOT TO DO SO does little to confirm him as "one of us" for I am certain that TFA Members of all parties are confirmed Eurosceptics. Cameron says that he will definitely leave the EPP after the 2009 European Elections, finally delivering on his leadership election promise However Miro Topolanek, the Czech prime Minister, Cameron's partner in forming his proposed post-EEP grouping in the European Parliament is "committed" to ratifying the LISBON TREATY hardly an ideal partner to roll back the EU. As soon as the Conservative MEPs had elected a new leader, the Europhile Timothy Kirkhope, Charles Tannock suggested on Conservative Home , that they should stay in the EPP, for reasons of status. WHAT OF SHADOW FOREIGN SECRETARY WILLIAM HAGUE? I recall his commitment to opposition to the Euro was limited to the life of one parliament. With the Pound collapsing towards parity with the Euro and the current "beneficial" economic and financial crisis, demands for us to adopt the currency of the will come again harder to oppose post ratification of the LISBON -Treaty which requires it. We have an OPT-OUT, but nothing is forever. Speaking at the Freedom in the City talk Professor Haseler of the Federal trust confirmed that the EUROPHILES would push for THIS and Roland Rudd , Chairman of Britain for a New Europe had an article calling for this on the Evening Standard website (15.11.08) followed by Will Hutton in the Observer (16.11.08) A major plank of the Conservative's European manifesto will be apparent strident opposition to the LISBON TREATY and a commitment to hold a further referendum , post a GENERAL ELECTION. This played well until David Cameron made his "Harrow Declaration" diluting his initial commitment. Policy is now: We will be sold the familiar, but sad old tale of unceasing efforts to renegotiate our position in the EU, so much easier from within. [Balderdash!-Fiddle-Faddle!] " So if the Lisbon Treaty is not yet in force at the time of the next General Election [No fear of that as the supposed reluctant Scot Gordon Brown signed the and in the words of our greatest English poet

and a Conservative Government is elected we would put the Treaty to a referendum of the British people, recommending a "no" vote [Well! in 2013 we are told by David Cameron that he would fight to remain in a reformed EU so there was never any truth in the above statement. The man has been proved a serial liar and traitor to his country and not to be trusted under any circumstances.] If the British people rejected the Treaty, we would withdraw Britain's ratification of it. But if the treaty is in force we will be in a different situation. In our view, then, political integration would have gone too far and the Treaty would lack democratic legitimacy in this country and we would not let matters rest there." What does " we would not let matter rest there " mean? We will be sold the familiar, but sad old tale of unceasing efforts to negotiate our position in the EU, so mush easier from within. Nigel Farage, at the Bruges Group meeting in Birmingham, recalled a cartoon of a fish within a fishing net telling another outside " it is much easier to negotiate from within" If Cameron was really opposed to LISBON he would kill it dead NOW! by offering a referendum, come what may, without qualification. [A reminder this article was written in the Winter of 2008/9 If LISBON is no good before ratification it cannot be good after. If, because of treaty law, a NO vote in such a referendum meant we would have to leave the EU then so be it. We woul;d, as the Freedom Association's own campaign states, be "BETTER OFF OUT OF THE EU" anyway. Where are the Conservatives crying out about yet another year of unsatisfactory EU ACCOUNTS [Not been passed for over 18 years] With losses of 2p in the £1 being seemed acceptable by the auditors with actual losses being greater such as 11p in the £1 for structural funds (6 billion Euros) one would expect a Shadow chancellor to be outraged, not pussyfooting around the margins of employment taxes. There will be no referendum, but there will be an early opportunity for all those opposed to LISBON and everything else that is wrong with our membership of the EU clearly to highlighting this. Voting for the UKIP on 4 June -2009 [Certainly in May 2014] and securing yet more UKIP MEPS will send a message to the EU, the Government, and most importantly, David Cameron, that we seek change. LEND US YOUR VOTE AND CHANGE YOUR COUNTRY-PUT COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY. am certain that David Cameron would then be forced to CHANGE and PROMISE us the POLICIES the MAJORITY DEMAND. A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE IN 2013 and again in 2014 [At another time of loss of faith and great unrest in our world a message from 1943 while our country and others were years into the battle to FREE EUROPE from TOTALITARIAN STATES we are in December 2013 facing the rise of HITLER'S DREAM of that year of a EUROPEAN UNION from SPAIN to the URALS. The writer of the following work had suggested that after the war there should be a EUROPEAN FEDERATION but alongside of ENGLAND and HER NEIGHBOURING NATION STATES with the COMMONWEALTH as a separate sphere of influence in the World together with the NEW WORLD-the USA and others in the world at large. With the growing realisation that since that time there has been a continuing advance of the SECULAR as opposed to the SPIRITUAL cement of SOCIETY and its tragic consequences for our country and the rest of MANKIND.]
' We have seen European civilisations owed its origin neither to racial unity nor to political organisations but to the spiritual forces which united Romans and barbarians in the new society of Christendom. but that society was not limited in principle to the particular society of peoples of which it was actually composed. It was in principle a universal society, based on the unity and brotherhood of mankind and corresponding on the temporal plane to the new idea of humanity which transcended all divisions of race and class, "in which there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian not Scythian, bond or free, but Christ is all and in all." If this faith is still alive in the world today [1943-and we can ask the same question in December 2013 and again in 2014] it is no less valid as a spiritual basis of world order , as it was in the past for the making of Europe; in fact, it is only in a world order that the Christian social idea of spiritual universalism and the world vocation of Christianity have formed the background of Christian social ethics. [Not the ILLUMINATI /NEW WORLD ORDER /BANKSTERS which have existed for thousands of years but the present particular SATANIC ORDER which had its origins in Bavaria over 200 hundred years ago] Thus Christians have a twofold responsibility and mission in the present crisis. In the first place they are the heirs of the old European tradition and the guardian of the spiritual principle from which Europe derived its being. There is nothing in the European past that has not been formed or conditioned by Christian influences, and even the heresiarchs and revolutionaries are not excepted since they have often been inspired by an exaggerated and one-sided devotion to some particular element in the common tradition. And in the second place Christians have a new responsibility and mission to the new world society that Europe has created in spite of itself by its scientific achievements and its colonial and economic expansion. This world society is still formless, a chaos in which the forces of destruction [even in 2013 and in 2014] alone seem active. It does not possess in itself any principle of order or spiritual power which is capable of giving organic form or unity. Any attempt to organise the world by military or economic power divorced from spiritual vision is doomed to failure, because it ignores the deepest and most vital factors in the problem and if these psychological and spiritual forces are neglected they are apt to reassert themselves in a destructive and passionate revolt such as that which destroyed the Weimer republic and the international system of the League of Nations. It is therefore impossible to dismiss the claims of Christianity as irrelevant to the problem of international order, for the demonic powers which have entered the empty house of secular civilisations are not to be exorcised by the economist or the politician: religion is the only power that can meet the forces of destruction on equal terms and save mankind from its spiritual enemies. The world mission of Christianity is based on its conception of a spiritual society which transcends all states and cultures and is the final gaol of humanity. Wherever Christianity exists there survives a seed of unity, a principle of spiritual order, which cannot be destroyed by war or the conflict of economic interests or the failure of political organisation. No doubt it will be said that the Christian Church does not in fact perform this function and that Christians are too few, too weak and too poor in intellectual and spiritual qualities to influence the course of history. But the same might have been said of the Jews in the age of the prophets or of the Christians themselves under the Roman Empire. " You see your vocation, brethren," wrote St. Paul, " that not many wise men according to the flesh, not many of the powerful, not many of the noble called." It is of the very nature of Christianity not to depend on human means, not to trust in " the arm of the flesh," not to judge events by human or secular standards. The one thing that it demands is faith, and lack of FAITH is the only thing that can DEFEAT the DIVINE PURPOSE. THE GREAT BETRAYAL
This week, European Ministers will rubber stamp a new EU TREATY almost identical to the constitution rejected two years ago. Labour's broken promise of a referendum is one of the most scandalous abuses of public trust in our poet-war history.

TO BE honest, it was hard not to laugh. The normally fug of the giant Berlaymont headquarters of the European Union was shattered two years ago by the midnight news that the French -the French! -had rejected the eurocrats' latest grand projet, the EUROPEAN CONSTITUTION.

to hear the results of the French referendum included Jean-Claude Juncker the leader of Luxembourg (population 450,000), who happened to hold the Buggins -turn presidency of the EU.
And President Juncker's reaction? The French, he insisted, would have to carry on voting until they gave the 'right answer'. The remark betrayed breathtaking arrogance. But , of course, the bitter truth is that approach had worked before: The Danish and the Irish had both become befuddled enough to reject EU treaties in the past, only to see the error of their ways the second time round. We need to continue with our ambitious projects,' the president said. The irony is that Juncker, a deeply unimpressive man possessing all the grandeur of an actuary, was not showing contempt for the EU style democracy, but an undue faith in it. We now know that the French and Dutch voters who brought Europe to a shuddering crisis by rejecting the constitution in 2005, won't have a chance to give the 'right answer' the second time around: THERE WILL BE NO SECOND TIME. Their governments are so terrified their citizens will make the same mistake again that they are determined to ram the revived constitution through compliant parliaments. [What must be remembered is that all previous signatories of the EU TREATIES have received so-called facility payments-bribes in other words. It is also possible that the rewards financial and otherwise will be filtered downwards discretely to those MPs who follow the EU LINE when the constitution is finally completed. And in Britain, our Government won't even allow us to make a mistake for the first time. Labour won an election in 2005 on a MANIFESTO PLEDGE TO GIVE THE BRITISH PEOPLE A REFERENDUM ON THE [EU] TREATY
but just two years later has reneged on the deal.
Jose Manuel , the powerful president of the European Commission, which runs the EU, mused recently that the EU is sometimes seen as a by politicians against their people. It is difficult to think how the EU -where ministers make laws behind closed doors that national parliaments cannot over-rule - could do more to give that impression if it wanted to. Valery Giscard D'Estaing, the former French president who wrote the -explained his tactics: 'Public opinion will be led to adopt without knowing it, the proposals that we dare not present to them directly.' Even Europhile Hugo Young (the late Guardian columnist) entitled his magisterial history of the EU-This Blessed Plot. ONLY THOSE IGNORANT of the EU's ways will be surprised that the once dead constitution has been resurrected. Created to tie Europe together after World War II, the EU was designed to have an inner momentum for never-ending integration that is all but unstoppable. Juncker's successor as EU president, Tony Blair announced that after two 'NO' votes, Europe would enter a period of reflection. [RUBBISH!] But Europe looked in the mirror and , unable to accept the flaws it saw, brought the same treaty back again - minus the title 'CONSTITUTION' and the reference to EU FLAGS EU ANTHEMS EU MOTTOS and a special EUROPE DAY that Europeans would be required by INTERNATIONAL TREATY TO CELEBRATE Yet even hardened cynics and Europhiles are being moved to anger by GORDON BROWN'S REFUSAL:
TO LET THE PEOPLE HAVE THEIR SAY. This is the Prime Minister who finally grasped the most powerful job in the land promising: 'I will listen and learn. I want to lead a government humble enough to know its place, where I will always strive to be- and that's on the people's side.' This is the Prime Minister who promised: 'We've got to honour that manifesto. It is an issue of trust for me and the electorate.' This is the Prime Minister elected by neither his MPs nor his party members nor his country. who welcomed President Barroso to Downing Street last week and who will attend a summit in Lisbon on Thursday to put the finishing touches to a constitution on which he now insists there is no need of a referendum. THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST POLITICAL BETRAYALS OF PUBLIC TRUST IN POST WAR HISTORY The real question for me is why any politician bothers making speeches of attending seminars on why voters in Britain are being turned off democracy. isn't working; it isn't responding to the clear will of the people. [As we have said constantly over the past 12 years ONLY PR-PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION would bring real democracy to Britain. There would also be the need to ensure that MPs only attended ONE TERM of PARLIAMENT which would allow the MANY subjects in business and all walks of life to be selected and have the option to SERVE THEIR COUNTRY.] The Government claims the new treaty (the REFORM TREATY) is not the same as the old constitution [rejected by French and Dutch voters in 2005]. As David Miliband, a Foreign secretary so young he was not allowed to vote in the 1975 referendum on whether we should pull out of the [Supposed] Common Market that Britain had joined in 1973, put it: " The Constitutional Treaty has been abandoned." However, politicians across La Manche are being more frank. Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, who gave the kiss of life to the treaty, crowed: 'the substance of the constitution is preserved; THAT IS A FACT.' [capitals ours] Margot Wallstrom, the stunningly lightweight Swedish vice-president of the Commission, responsible for selling the concept of Europe to Europeans said: 'It is essentially the same proposal as the old constitution.' Irish leader Bertie Ahern declared it was 90 per cent identical. Last week, in our House of Commons, the Labour-dominated European Scrutiny Committee agreed the new document was substantially equivalent to the one Labour promised a referendum on. Gordon Brown faces a revolt of his own MPs -as many as 30 are expected to vote against the constitution when Parliament is asked to ratify it next year. But with a majority of 66, Brown is almost certain to win a vote in the COMMONS against holding a referendum. Again, is it any surprise that people are losing faith in our democracy. [What ever DEMOCRACY which was left after decades of Conservative Rule has over ten years of new Labour has been almost eliminated. ALL the political parties in the HOUSE have colluded in the BETRAYAL of the BRITISH PEOPLE. When one considers the millions of people with access to information about the EU with a CLICK around these days and their lack -lustre or complete indifference to what is happening to their COUNTRY-THEIR FREEDOMS it is no wonder that a POLL on the PM website to rid us of the monstrous connection with the corrupt police state soon to call itself THE UNITED STATES OF EUROPE is struggling to reach 100 The members of the COMMITTEES of ALL eurosceptic organisations must run into hundreds and their members into over 2 million. It is time the leaders [We asked for ONE LEADER] to break the habits of a lifetime and genuinely co-operate with the CIB -Campaign for an Independent Britain and get the figure soaring upwards in days not months. Surely it would have been possible for all the bodies co-operating to at first alert their membership to sign within days of the launch of the PETITION The phone in to No10 could have been better prepared and as we have said before there have been so many CAMPAIGNS and SIGN HERE scenarios over the past decade-many of them dying before they had hardly began. It is no wonder that finger fatigue and even valuable Press outrage fatigue could be setting in . But whatever the reason, we have just weeks to make a positive contribution to get the OUT OF THE EU - BALL ROLLING AND DEMAND A REFERENDUM BY CHRISTMAS- 2007.
The fact us that ALL MPS who are against the new EU TREATY should refuse to co-operate in the HOUSE and make it impossible for the Government to continue with its legislative programme. What we have here is an ACT of the GOVERNMENT against THE PEOPLE which has ignored their own PROMISE to leave the DECISION as to whether they wished to LOSE THEIR COUNTRY -OR NOT? For members of PARLIAMENT to consider other matters when the very life of our NATION STATE is in dire PERIL would be a grave and traitorous action ON THEIR PART. The matter must be resolved by CHRISTMAS not left on the low burner until next year, as the longer the matter is unresolved the greater will be the anger and no doubt the positive action will intensify to a pitch WHICH NO GOVERNMENT CAN IGNORE.
SIGN THE
RENUNCIATION of EU CITIZENSHIP * Unions, including the GMB and UNISON are demanding a vote, but count for nothing in the Brown calculus. Eurosceptic campaigners are relying on the media to create irresistible pressure, but much of the Press is suffering outrage fatigue from its exertions the last time the treaty was an issue. Ironically, it may fall to ex-Communist countries like Poland or the Czech Republic to bounce our government into respecting democracy, by having their own referendums, causing the European Constitution TO CRASH. Gordon Brown repeatedly quotes his glorious-sounding 'red lines' (key areas of national interest such as JUSTICE HOME AFFAIRS SOCIAL SECURITY FOREIGN POLICY which he has promised to SAFEGUARD) as a reason not to hold the REFERENDUM -we have protected our national interests, so we have nothing to fear. But these 'red lines' have been devised by SPIN DOCTORS to persuade the media that MINISTERS are DEFENDING BRITAIN'S SOVEREIGNTY. [WHICH OF COURSE THEY ARE NOT] Contained in the new treaty is a slight reformulation of Opt-outs that Britain enjoys in various areas notably CRIMINAL JUSTICE. YET, as we have learned many times in the past, these opt-outs which come with heavy penalties if you use them, might seem good on paper, but in reality are usually ineffective. (there are exceptions: for example, Britain successfully opted out of the SINGLE CURRENCY). Squeal as British officials might we normally end up getting bullied, brow-beaten or blackmailed into going with the European tide. [So WHY Mr Browne do you believe that : 'The EU does a lot of good things. Despite its many ridiculousnessess, despite the fact it is designed to fight the problems of the early 20th century rather than those of the 21st, we are, on balance BETTER OFF IN THAN OUT' [Whatever so called good things that have come out of the EU the people of Britain are having to pay higher price than many expected and that is the loss of their Independent Nation State. Can Mr Browne please enlighten us on those goodies for which we might pay the ultimate price and ask if they could not have been achieved by co-operation between sovereign Nation States or within a looser Alliance. It has been the Europhiles who in word and print have emphasised that they intended to alter the abominable monster before it lost control. Where are those MPs and MEPs today in October 2007. We have in particular in mind the MEP Philip Bushill-Mathews Conservative -West Midlands. No doubt he and others would say after 35 years of trying, they needed more time. WHAT A CON! and of course these are the very individuals who will do very nicely out of the overflowing trough of treasure by their TREASON.] As a former Brussels correspondent, I watched with awe as British diplomats went in to defend a 'vital national interest', when armed with an opt-out, only to quietly - usually almost silently - concede defeat, before declaring it a triumph and claim it to be a slur to suggest they hadn't always wanted it. [Now what is the term to use in such circumstances? We guess 'Going native ' will do nicely don't you think?] Do you remember the fundamental principle that the EU should have no right to impose criminal laws on the UK against the wishes of parliament? This was swept aside in a judgment by the European Court of justice (one of the main motors for [complete] integration) which ruled, against the British Government -The British Parliament- The British People, that our European partners had the right to require Britain to introduce a CRIMINAL LAW even if not a single person in Britain wanted it. [And what EU goodie would we get in exchange-Free Bus passes?] This is the opposite of -one of the principles of DEMOCRACY. Don't forget the British Government had an opt-out on the Working Time Directive, a European law no British Government has supported, but which is now nearly fully imposed in Britain.
As Michael Connarty, Labour chairman of the LABOUR-LED European Scrutiny Committee put it recently, Labour's 'red lines' on the [new] Constitution would' leak like a sieve'. What is happening is not small scale. the British Government may claim that the CONSTITUTION -which brings in a Permanent EU president EU Foreign Minister -allows the EU to sign binding treaties on our behalf and transfer dozens of powers from Westminster to Brussels -is a mere tweaking. [As we have constantly stated immediately the new EU treaty is ratified by YOUR PARLIAMENT-BRITAIN but more specifically ENGLAND will NO LONGER BE A SOVEREIGN NATION STATE. The EU will at the precise time of the signing become a NATION STATE calling itself the UNITED STATES OF EUROPE whatever the so-called-'red lines' may say.
YOU HAVE A CHOICE DO YOU WANT TO BE RULED BY THE EU IN BRUSSELS OR BY YOUR OWN PEOPLE - YOUR OWN LAW -IN WESTMINSTER-YOU CANNOT HAVE BOTH. BUT IF YOU CHOOSE THE LATER YOU WILL NEED TO SIGN THE RENUNCIATION OF EU CITIZENSHIP AND GET OFF YOUR BACKSIDE AND GET DOWN TO THE RALLY IN WESTMINSTER ON SATURDAY THE 27TH OCTOBER, 2007. BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE CAN DO IT FOR YOU!

Mr Browne's article continues: OTHER EU leaders are at least honest. Belgian prime minister Guy Verhofstadt described the 'CONSTITUTION as the 'CAPSTONE of a FEDERAL STATE' Romano Prodi, Italian prime minister and former European Commission president, told me the EU is a 'a big change in the concept of nation states. it is a change of centuries of history.' If none of the reasons for doing without a constitution hold water, there may be another - the same reason Gordon Brown decided not to call a general election: the fear of losing. British law to curb those who wish to encourage violence. Affray and
disorder. When others put this basic right of comment under threat then
who is there to defend the Principle of Free Speech.

but the issue has now become one of freedom of speech.
The possibility that a
government-appointed body could suspend him from office is one of the
most outrageous things I have ever heard.
What he said to an Evening
Standard reporter was something no gentleman would say. But so what?
Politics, local or national, has never been distinguished by gentlemanly
behaviour and never will be. Newspapers can play it rough, too. Both
sides expect to give and take hard knocks.
The real villain of the
piece is an item of legislation entitled-soporifically-The
Local
Authorities (Model Code of Conduct) (England) Order 2001. Under
‘General Obligations’, we find the astonishing subsection, which
says that councillors ‘must treat others with respect’.
Note the word ‘must’-
not ‘should’ or ‘would be wise to’ or ‘wouldn’t be nice if
all councillors were to’. No, politeness is mandatory.
Consider also the ludicrous word
‘others’, not voters,
officials, fellow councillors or anything so narrow. ‘Others’ can mean
anyone on the planet, from David Beckham to the Grand Mufti of
Jerusalem.

wonder, did this preposterous threat to free speech creep in? It seems
that when the legislation in question was introduced, the Conservatives
concentrated their fire on the excessive regulation of parish councils,
which was then being established.
The Tory promise was that,
if it returned to power they would abolish the bureaucratic Standards
Board for England (SBE)_
a collection of nonentities chosen by the Government-and leave sorting
out of councillors’ problems about conflicts of interest and the like to
the Local Government Ombudsman.
The Opposition made no move
to oppose the wretched 2001 Order when it came along-no protests, not
even a demand for a vote.
This sinister threat of
censorship, which should be fought to the last ditch, passed on a nod,
leaving the SBE [Standards Board for England] with the power to bar
someone from office for up to five years for breaching the code.
The matter of Livingstone’s
words has been referred to the SBE by the Board of Deputies of British
Jews, a disgraceful move. It does British Jewry’s reputation no good to
have the Deputies leading a campaign against freedom of speech.
Livingstone’s remark about
a reporter behaving like a concentration camp guard has, also absurdly
been dubbed ‘racist’.
It may have played harshly
on the target’s sensitivities, but by no stretch of the imagination did
it belittle or attack a race.
The only thing this sort of
exaggeration shows is how far the rot of ‘anti-racism’ has taken us. We
are becoming like the U.S. where the obsession about ‘race’ has reached
the proportions of a national mania.
No doubt, we shall hear the
commonplace retort from those accused of trying to curb free speech that
of course they are all in favour of freedom, except where
it is abused. This is nonsensical view.
A Freedom, which cannot be
abused, is not worth having.
The threat to Livingstone comes in the wake of another threat to free
speech in the Government’s new legislation to ban remarks, which stir up
religious hatred. Freedom of speech, if it means what it says, involves
the right:
Annoy
Dismay
And Shock
Anyone who Listens.
The only sensible limitation should be on speech designed
to lead to violence, affray or disorder. But that has always been
enshrined in British law anyway.
I can’t help recalling from my youth, in relation to this whole issue,
the harmless joke in one of those monologues wonderfully recited by
[that great entertainer and loveable gentleman] Stanley Holloway-the
Lion and Albert, and all the rest.
As some readers may
remember’ one explained how the barons of old descended on King John
when he was having tea’ on Runningmede Island in t’Thames’ and made him
sign the Magna Carta…’but his writing in places was sticky and thick
through dipping his pen in the jam’.
The verse concludes:
‘In England today we can do
what we like
So long as we
do what
we’re told’
How I laughed then, I would not have believed that this joke could one
day be transmuted to:
‘And that is why we can talk as we
like
So long as we
talk
as we’re told.’
A final touch of absurdity is added by the claim that Livingstone’s
remark may jeopardise London’s attempt to host the Olympic Games. If it
did, it would be one good outcome. The cost, the upset, the
dislocation, the sheer waste of effort if London is chosen is too
appalling to contemplate.
But if his comment really threatened London’s Olympic bid, it would show
what a silly solemn people make up the International Olympic Committee.
It might have been a nice
thing if Livingstone had originally apologised for having been
gratuitously rude. But the issue has gone beyond that now. For him to
retreat in the face of a threat to freedom of speech is in no one’s
interest.

when first asked his opinion said that Livingstone should apologise [for
his rudeness]
and
move on to more important things.
