PENSIONER WILL GO TO PRISON -THAN PAY RATES INCREASE The
only way that pensioners will be heard will be if they combine together in
every location in the country and form a Pensioner Won’t Pay Committee. As is usual we all look for others to fight
our battles but in this instance it is vital that as many pensioners as
possible declare their intention to stand together and not pay any increase in
Rates. It
will only be by the pensioners joining
together and being willing to accept the penalty that the movement will have any chance of success. If
you are a pensioner who finds no difficulty in paying the increase because of
particular circumstances then think of those who are not so fortunate and give
your support in organising the local resistance movement. As
has been said on many occasions by many commentators from all political
persuasions the answer is greater increased pensions not an intrusive
questionnaire. The
Government will say they do not have the money but as we all know they waste
and are still wasting Billions of £’s every year on Iraq, illegal immigrants,
payments to the EU, fraud in the benefit system, uncontrolled government
defence and computer projects, politically correct handouts and other worthless
unnecessary non-jobs which add nothing to wealth creation or offer any value
for the taxpayer. The
Government will no doubt say that it cannot give an increased pension to all
pensioners because a large number of them have already a much larger income.
Well I can think of no better section of our community, who should enjoy an
enhanced quality of life in their own homes in their closing years and after
all the beneficiaries of this extra help will be the oncoming pensioners of
future years. * * * In
the Daily mail on Friday the 16th January 2004 in their on going
campaign to obtain justice for the poor and needy and particularly the old in
our society their Social affairs correspondent Steve Doughty has outlined the
case of a Naval war veteran, Fred Estall has always been proud to be a
law-abiding citizen. ‘But yesterday he found himself before a court for
the first time in his 80 years- for refusing to pay his council tax. The man who flies the
flag of St George outside his three-bed roomed detached house was prosecuted
after withholding payments in protest at the huge increases in his bill. He complained that
council tax had gone up by 14 per cent while his pension had risen by only
4.5%. As magistrates in Southampton ordered him to pay his £452 arrears plus
£30 costs he told them: This is totally unfair. I think it is an utter
disgrace. I’m an honest citizen. I’ve paid my way all my life without
question.’ And afterwards he vowed
to go to jail rather than pay the increase. ‘I have decided I will
pay whatever the tax was last year but I will not pat any excess, the 14 per
cent which it went up by’ said the father of three at the house he shares with
his wife Joan in Hedge End, Southampton. ‘I know the council will
want to sue me but if thousands of us refuse to pay in protest then will they
sue all of us? In principle, I would be prepared to go to jail – that’s how
strongly I feel about it.’ ‘I may have appeared in a
court of law but it was not a court of justice in my mind. ‘I have lived in my house
for 45 years. It is nice, but it is not extravagant and I object to the
suggestion that my wife and I should move to a property in a lower tax band
because we are retired. ‘I have many happy
memories in this house. I have brought my family up here and have lovely
neighbours. Why should I move away? Mr Estall typifies the
army of pensioners who complain that the rise in council tax takes no account
of their ability to pay. Their growing unrest has provoked alarm among the
police chiefs who have warned of the risk of large –scale civil disobedience. …Protesters will head for
London tomorrow (17-1-04) for a rally in Trafalgar Square, which will remind
ministers, and councils now planning the next set of tax rises of the strength
of feeling. Some 40,000 have signed a petition complaining about council tax
increases circulated by the campaign group www.isitfair.co.uk. Yesterday, (17-1-04) the
group was given permission to march along the road to Downing Street and
present the petition after police had earlier said this would not be possible. Mr Estall said he
cancelled his council tax standing order in the hope that someone would listen
to his complaints. ‘But no one came and so I
still didn’t pay. To be honest I am quite an easy-going chap and I have never
got worked up about anything like this before. ‘I have always paid my
rates and taxes because everyone must contribute-I want schools to run and
people to empty my bins. ‘When someone like me is
driven to protest, the authorities really need to listen because something must
be wrong.’ The council tax bill for
a D-band property in Hedge End for 2003-4 is £1126.71. There is no discount for
pensioners. The council tax protests
have spread nationally from the West Country where increases of 17 per cent and
more were common last April. The Government has joined
councils in a push to replace council taxes with a basket of new taxes which
would make increases much harder for the public to work out. The Royal British Legion
said yesterday that it had been flooded with calls from members looking for
help with debt and difficulties because of tax demands of local councils. Legion official Alan
Fairclough said: ‘sadly people seem to be doing without necessities of life as
a greater share of their modest income goes towards council tax.’ * * The Government is no
doubt looking at other ways of funding local government particularly because of
its obsession with forcing the introduction of the Regional Assembles, which
will have to be paid for by local taxes. So
beware of showing any interest in Regional Local government. It is unnecessary
extra layer of expenditure and will lead to the final loss of our Independence
as a Free Nation State. Question any scheme they recommend and hold on to your
local accountability. *
