The damning email on our Afghan ‘failure’

British soldiers in Afghanistan are seen as ‘no better than the ‘Taliban’, according to an officer serving on the frontline.

He says troops are having no effect in trying to win over the hearts and minds of local Afghans.

In an email to family he makes damaging claims that the

-Afghan National Army and Police

Are ‘all corrupt’, and are deliberately passing information to enemy fighters to help them target UK positions.

The infantry officer also complains of supply problems for soldiers in isolated outposts-running short of water and having to wait days for deliveries of sandbags to protect against incoming fire.

The damning assessment will raise fresh concerns over the prospects of the 5,000-strong British force battling to oust the Taliban from Afghanistan’s lawless Helmand province.  While British commander, Brigadier Ed Butler has claimed the Taliban is almost beaten, saying, I think we have won’, others believe the enemy will regroup this winter.

The Army officer commanding an infantry unit wrote to his family and friends telling them he and his men had seen ‘plenty’ of action against the Taliban –‘some good some bad’, but on the whole we are killing more of them than they are of us.’

In an email, seen by the Daily Mail, he adds: ‘We are not having any effect on the average Afghan. At the moment we are no better than the Taliban in their eyes , as all they can see is us moving into an area, blowing things up and leaving –which is sad.

For much of the summer scores of British troops have been effectively pinned down in fortified outposts in northern Helmand, repelling constant enemy attacks but unable to pursue their original goal of helping reconstruction projects.

Ominously, the officer voices grave doubts over the loyalty of the Afghan police and army, who are supposed to be key partners in rebuilding the country as a viable [western] state.

He describes one incident where police visited his unit as it dug into a new position, then left and were seen to visit a near village.

Within an hour Taliban fighters launched an intense mortar bombardment from the village, raining down shells accurately on the UK troop’s location.  The officer writes:

‘This just confirms to us that the [Afghan] Army and Police are all corrupt.’

The allegation mirrors similar problems in southern Iraq, where extremists and insurgents have infiltrated the Iraqi police force.

The officer writing the email claims that what was meant to be a peace support operation’ in Helmand has turned out to be nothing of the sort.

‘We are now on a serious war-footing having been part of the most sustained period of high intensity fighting in years.’ He writes.

The leak comes after an Army major last week said RAF jet and helicopter crews supporting soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan were ‘utterly, utterly useless’.

The Ministry of Defence dismissed the email as ‘only one individual’s views’  A spokesman said progress was being made in winning hearts and minds , with five million children returning to school and widespread immunisation programmes , and more Army engineers arriving to bolster reconstruction efforts.

‘Afghan forces have performed impressively alongside our own showing great courage and at considerable loss of life,’ she said.

Earlier this week Soviet generals who were forced to retreat from Afghanistan after a decade of bloody struggle in the 1980s, warned British commanders that they will eventually face the same humiliation.

Points to make

1.                       The present policy of the British Government in moving ahead with a reconstruction programme before the country as a whole is free from the Taliban –which will be never as the above Soviet opinion suggests above - is a misplaced and dangerous policy.

2.                        If it intends to stay in Afghanistan its main priority is to give our troops all the equipment and support they need to do their job at a minimum of risk –but many will die over the years ahead.

3.                          The MoD spokeswomen made great play with the work being done for the children of Afghanistan but as far as we are aware we do not have children encircling our outposts in Helmand –well not yet. The lives of OUR TROOPS comes FIRST and RECONSTRUCTION when if ever the country is fully under control of the NATO forces –which we are unlikely to see.

4.                       It is plain for all to see that the Government will stay in Afghanistan for reasons best known to George Bush and Tony Blair. They have no intention of altering their muddled strategy because it suits their purpose at the present time. Their Dual policy of friendship and conquest will not succeed but the Afghan people will take what they can while the politically correct idiots with their Health and Safety and Gender awareness workshops do their best to what they call  -to western Afghanistan.

5.                       Many of our troops will never see their homeland again and those who are fighting every hour of every day for £2 a hour and ignored because it is the reconstruction projects  or in other words the SPIN which counts with the Blairites.

6.                       The British commander, Brigadier Ed Butler claims the Taliban is almost beaten, saying ‘I think we have won’.  WE can think of no more provocative reply as in the case of many politicians whenever they open their mouths disaster appears. The Taliban in their caves and hide-a-ways will just give a grin and say just the comment we want to hear that will be worth at least a few more thousand followers to help us rid the invader from our country.   We would advice commander Ed Butler not to be carried along with SPIN because it will be his encircled outposts which will feel the reply from the Taliban in answer to his cocky and confident remark.   Unless the British commander sees that our brave and under equipped and under supplied without adequate air cover and helicopter support get what they NEED there will be a number of our troops being encircled in outposts with their supplies virtually extinguished reminiscent of the battle of the ‘Little Big Horn'depicted in ‘Custer’s Last Stand’ will show the bravery of our troops and the gross incompetence of their Commander and the MoD and the Government.

7.                       The Government has got itself into a mess of gigantic proportions by ignoring the advice of diplomats and other seasoned observers that Afghanistan is no country to play their misguided games of bluff and bluster and blandishments while our brave troops will be blooded in their own ‘ Alamo ’ predicament and in that instance it will not be the death but the rebirth of the Afghan Nation - who deserve to decide their own future without the polluting and devious influences of the so-called democratic West.

8.                       Our brave soldiers have been handed the dangerous and thankless task of holding the  ‘thin red line’ outnumbered and forgotten while many politicians who voted for the Iraq and the Afghan mission impossible congratulate themselves on their efforts to rebuild today what will surely fall tomorrow or the next day.  As we have said on a number of occasions if the MoD had to pay the families of our brave dead soldiers £1,000,000 –though the loss of their loved one’s cannot be priced –the Government would have supplied the new £247,000 Cougar (bomb proof) armoured vehicle which is coming into service in a few months and which has been with American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan for 18 months –rather than the necessity of the massive payout from the Treasury.

9.                       The sooner Tony Blair and his clowns depart then we will hope that the present prospect of a ‘Vietnam tragedy will be averted by a politician who has INTEGRITY-HONESTY and COMPASSION and DETERMINATION to see THAT RIGHT IS DONE .

10.              The cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan war is at least £5billion and will cost at least 2billion a year and if greater numbers of troops and backup services are sent the figures could easily double to £4 billion a year.  We should waste not another drop of our forces blood but decide to leave Iraq and Afghanistan
