Why the feely TONY and his sickening Culture clique should leave the People to respond to the Tsunami Disaster. In
the Daily Mail on Wednesday January 5th 2005 an article by Max
Hastings
under the title of Why I’ll ignore today’s three minute silence which was as
usual started with the Presidency in Brussels and snatched up by our friend
Tony in order to make up for his delay in arriving home from his holiday and of
course there is an election only a few month’s away. What a wonderful opportunity he has to show
his concern and redress for such a pitiful initial offer of aid for a disaster
of such unprecedented proportions. * ‘It’s a political stunt that betrays our War dead and demeans the awesome generosity of the British public.’ However great is our sympathy for the victims of the tsunami disaster, nothing seems more likely to diminish it than the embarrassing, mawkish, tasteless, repugnant gesture of decreeing an official three-minute silence for them today. This
proposal, like so many bad ideas, started with the EU presidency in Brussels.
It was instantly adopted by Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell and is now the
policy of the British Government. Today
at noon, flags fly at half-mast. We are
supposed to stop whatever we are doing to join an official expression of
sympathy for the stricken of Asia. Like
Tony Blair’s creation of ‘Holocaust’ Day, the purpose of today’s silence
is to show that our politicians are men and women who feel, who share the pain
of others who suffer? Yet
its most likely consequence is to promote cynicism about a great human
misfortune, to
which the public’s response has been more impressive than that of our leaders. Sacrifice The three-minute silence diminishes the only such event that matters, our annual two-minute commemoration of those who fell in the two World Wars. [And those who have and are still laying down their life for their country today] What
is special about Armistice Day on November II, is that it recalls the sacrifice
of more than a million young British [and Commonwealth] men and women, who
participated in the two great 20th century struggles to defeat
tyranny and preserve freedom. Conscripts
or no, as they held their trenches, fought their ships, flew their planes or
advanced upon the enemy, they served as protagonists in two crusades. In
judging human affairs, we must preserve the distinction between heroes and
victims. We should acknowledge that people to whom terrible things happen
occupy a different place in history from those who perform noble actions by
choice. The 150,000 people who have lost their lives in the tsunami disaster suffered the consequences of an Act of God. For centuries, one of the most powerful forces in sustaining religious belief was humility. Most people recognised that man was a mercy of forces outside his control, epidemics, famines and terrestrial upheavals prominent among them. When
they besought God’s mercy in their daily prayers, they really meant it. They believed that in its absence, they were
doomed. The
shock inflicted upon us by the tsunami is all the greater because, amid the
conceit of our world in the 21st century, we have lost the old
humility, thanks to our conviction that we have mastered most of the forces
that once brought misery on mankind. At
the heart of the wonderful decency displayed by public behaviour since Boxing
Day is the resurrection of some of that old modesty about our control of
Nature. We are right to be appalled;
right to urge governments to give aid on scale private citizens cannot match. But
we must dissuade our politicians from corrupting and cheapening, by clumsy
gestures, the magnanimity of ordinary people across the world. Tony
Blair likes to respond to high-profile misfortunes by making lunges towards
what he perceives as public sentiment. For
instance, five years ago when the Japanese refused to give compensation to
their former wartime prisoners, the British Government announced that it would
give £10,000 to every former Japanese captive. A
friend of mine, who was a two-year –old Shanghai internee in 1942 got his
cheque and felt frankly embarrassed about it. To
some of us, it seemed absolutely right to try and shame the Japanese into
acknowledging their historic crimes.
Yet it seemed equally mistaken to cause the British taxpayer to make
reparation when Tokyo would not do so. The
payment became a handout from kindly, feely Tony, rather than the symbol of
atonement from the Japanese, which the British people-and most former
prisoners- wanted. When a catastrophe such as the tsunami happens, our politicians are prone to respond in our name with gestures designed to make them appear caring people in the eyes of their electorates, rather than with thoughtful actions, which will do most good for those who have suffered. Stricken George Bush and Tony Blair are in especially uncomfortable predicament. Many people around the world contrast the vast amounts they have been spending on fighting their war in Iraq with the far smaller resources the US and Britain will offer to regions stricken by the tsunami. Whatever
aid the Western allies send, they know that they will gain little political
credit. Hence
[feely] Tony with an election to fight in four months’ time embraces such
caring symbols as the three-minute silence. We can imagine the conversation at Downing Street after his return from Egypt, with somebody such as key adviser Lord Birt. Lord Birt: ‘Nice
holiday, Prime Minister? I’m afraid we have a small image problem for you back
here. Some people are saying it was
heartless of Cherie to keep working on her tan and stuffing olives by the pool
while they were loading all those coffins in Asia. ‘But
you will be relieved to hear that we have a plan to put all that right.
Brussels wants a silence-no; don’t worry, not from you-just everybody else.
Three minutes next Wednesday, [No it doesn’t matter if most people don’t know
what is happening or if there should be consultation], with a big photo
opportunity of you [Yes! of course You Tony]- looking moody, serious,
concerned, compassionate.’[As you do for the 100,000 Iraq citizens who have
lost their lives and the death of 76 British soldiers and the 3000 plus wounded,
some badly wounded, disabled and others who may yet succumb to their wounds] Tony Blair: ‘Great
idea, John. The World Wars-you know, they were a long time age. People don’t
feel sincerely sad about that any more. ‘Two
minutes for the tsunami would sound so mean. Three minutes will show this is
something we really, really upset about.
Shouldn’t we make it four, just to show we care more than people in
Brussels?’ Lord Birt: ‘Good
thinking Prime Minister, but we don’t think John Prescott could keep his mouth
shut that long. Let’s just settle for three minutes and looking specially
stricken and caring Hijack If
you think the above little fiction sounds tasteless, consider the likelihood
that reality was not much different. Our rulers
are attempting to make compassion official. They want to hijack it in the name
of New Labour. Seven
years ago, Tony [feely] Blair brilliantly succeeded in doing just that when the
Princess of Wales died. Today, we are all a lot wiser about the hollow heart of
this Government and its leader, and so less ready to succumb to synthetic
displays of sentiment. Personally,
I shall ignore today’s three-minute silence, as I am sure most of the British
public will do. We prefer to respond to such a terrible human event as the tsunami
in our own fashion, without official sponsorship from the Prime Minister and
the Department of Culture. Dignity
is an essential quality in human conduct, above all at moments of grief and
pity. We must resist attempts by our politicians to debase our own emotions or
