Why
won't Mr Ingram realise he cannot compare funding of Army Recruitment Training
with Private Corporations?
On
the programme last night Mr Ingram told Andrew Gilligan that the under-
funding on Army Recruit Training should be considered in the light of any
difficulty with which any corporation lacks sufficient funding in all
departments. Our
answer to him is that our soldiers
die for their country. First.
- We would say
the UK is the fourth richest country in the world. The Iraq War is costing
millions of pounds every week. The waste on failed computer contracts, faulty
equipment and other causes runs into billions. Second.
- As we have
mentioned on many occasions a Nation has a number of funding priorities –of
some: 1)
Children. 2) Disabled. 3) Elderly 4) Defence of the Realm. Third
-Without the
ability to defend its country a Nation places at risk the future safety of its
people and the safety of its economy and its proper obligations in a
competitive and troubled world. Fourth -The most important
priority in the Army is to train the new recruit with the best instructors and
the best equipment otherwise why spend billions of pounds on close support
vehicles and other equipment for the modern soldier. Fifth -There should be no expense
spared for the basic training and close support equipment of our armed forces.
No recruit should be sent to a unit who has not completed his full basic
training. After
all their lives and those of their comrades and innocent civilians will be at
greater risk without it. Sixth -The fault for the
catalogue of disasters is down to the Defence Secretary Geoffrey Hoon who
should decide on the real priorities in the Forces Budget - the human beings
and their essential needs other priorities should follow subject to their importance
in protecting our soldiers. Seventh. - The Army should be given
the funding to ensure that every fighting unit should have trained personnel to
stamp down hard on any yobbish behaviour, particularly that which is of a
brutal or sadistic nature. Eighth. -For those who have
experienced army service it has always been known that a little horseplay has
been a barrack room scene which we are all familiar with but unfortunately over
the past few years the more extreme anti-social examples in civiy street appear
to have invaded the barrack room. The
strict discipline and direct manner of those who have the responsibility to
turn the raw recruits into a fighting force can be intimidating to many but is
such a vital part of ensuring the recruit will benefit in order to save his
life and that of his comrades. For those Recruits under training they should have the means to express any fears they have to either the padre or other individual where confidentiality is ensured. In isolated cases it could be that the recruit is unable to respond and unfortunately is unsuitable for training. Ninth. - The decision of the
Defence Secretary to reduce the strength of the Army and in particular the
Black Watch regiment and no doubt other units at a time when there appears our
soldiers are needed in all quarters of the world makes no sense at all. As we have highlighted elsewhere the
importance of maintaining illustrious regiments which have a reputation and
history to defend. Why
is not possible to retain more historic county and highland regiments of the
past at least at company level with their own insignia within battalion
strength. The experienced nucleus would be there to build on when further
recruiting is needed. When
the Government itself undermines the inherited morale of fighting units because
of its politically correct agenda it is no wonder that there will be a penalty
to be paid in not retaining the spirit and example of discipline and sacrifice
of the past. But
then we know with Geoffrey Hoon common sense is not one of his strong points. Tenth.
- As we have said it is matter of the Defence Minister
getting his priorities right. The
resources are already there but being wasted in other areas of Defence spending
and should be put in the training and close support equipment of our brave
soldiers.
The MoD should change its present attitude and remember one can replace any equipment but a soldier’s life depends on getting the necessary training and close support and personal equipment in order to minimise his danger at all times. Cost should never be raised as an issue when the soldier is to be properly trained and equipped for his safety and service to his country. 12/04
