NICENESS is NOT ENOUGH to bring a GENUINE Tory BREAKTHROUGH.
by
Janet Daley
[Daily Telegraph- Monday May 7-2007]
TORY spokesman had clearly been
instructed to use the
WORD
"breakthrough"
Three times in every sentence. If it
wasn't George Osborne claiming a
"Breakthrough"
-in the North on Friday morning, it was
David Cameron beaming over
[Yes! you guessed it!]
"BREAKTHROUGH"
-in the percentage of the
POPULAR VOTE
-as he toured the suburbs on Friday
afternoon.
[Oh ! please not again]
Then Francis Maud chimed in with
congratulations to party workers for their stupendous
[YES! HE DID!]
"breakthrough"
And in case you missed IT, every
shadow minister who stepped in front of a camera at the weekend crowed
about
"THIS BREAKTHROUGH"
[After all this alliteration the Tory
faithful must have almost convinced themselves they were on their road
to victory]
Well, it wasn't so much as [Sorry!]
a breakthrough as a glimmering. Not that glimmerings are to be
disparaged. After 15 years of desolation, glimmering is good.
JUST LETS NOT GET CARRIED AWAY
As yesterdays Sunday Telegraph
reported,
in 750 key wards
the average Conservative share of the
vote increased by
JUST
0.4
percentage point
[Yes! the decimal point is in the right
place -we assure you!]
The overall popular vote percentage
only just made the precious 40 per cent mark, and there was little
identifiable progress outside the South and the Home Counties over the
last local council elections. (At least one much touted success in non
Tory land, Birmingham, seemed attributable to the
GREAT RUBBISH COLLECTION
FARRAGO
[In plain language all Tory claims are
RUBBISH.]
-which caused the Labour council to be
thrown on to its own overflowing waste dump.)
THE PARTY is still nowhere in Scotland.
and
WALES
-and failed to inspire any significant
rise in
TURNOUT
NATIONALLY
So this is a start towards
rehabilitation but its limitations should be obvious to any hard headed
Tory analyst who has not had the
WORD
" [YOU KNOW]"
-tattooed on the inside of their
eyelids.
The Conservatives are no longer
despised among the dinner-party classes of the South-East England
and they can pose a credible threat to the LibDems even in the South
-West, but they are
MAKING LITTLE PROGRESS
-in bringing back the working-and
lower-middle-class support in the wider country that was theirs in the
1980s.
Before there can be a genuine
"[THE WORD]"
-the party is going to have to figure
out
WHY THAT IS
The answer may be uncomfortable for the
amiable toffs, who see emollience and smooth charm as
THEIR KEYS TO THE FUTURE
The Conservative Party won millions of
C1and C2 votes in the 1980s because it was the party of
ASPIRATION
NOT
CONDESCENSION.
Abandoning traditional benign
paternalism, the Tory message became a focused, urgent reflection of the
ANGER and FRUSTRATION
-felt by millions of what are now
called
"Hardworking Families"
The party recognised that what most
people wanted was the chance to improve their lot in life
BY THEIR OWN EFFORTS.
They had grown tired of Labour's advice
to them:
"STAY WHERE you ARE and WE'LL look
AFTER YOU"
The message of Margaret Thatcher and
Norman Tebbit-both with personal experience of rising from the
self-respecting, self-made classes
WAS DIFFERENT:
-We will
sell you your council house so that you can own your own home
We will
make it easier for you to start your business.
We will
break the closed shops of the unions to give you more job opportunities.
We know
what the obstacles are in your life.
We understand
your problems.
WE ARE -ON YOUR SIDE.
The problems have changed a bit, but
there is still lots of anger out there, and the struggling aspirational
classes are still looking for someone who will articulate (and perhaps
embody) their difficulties. What they are furious about now is easy
enough to identify:
They are paying more and more in tax to
almost no perceptible effect, their public services are shockingly bad
by comparison with the variety and plenitude on offer in the private
sector, and the Government is failing in its basic duty to protect
law-abiding citizens from
CRIME and CIVIL DISORDER.
They are exasperated with politicians
who offer glib apologises for
DELINQUENCY
Among social workers of
Islington, it may be fashionable to
HUG A HOODIE
On the council estates of
MANCHESTER
-IT IS NOT.
When a man who has never been poor -
and never felt at the mercy of a
ROTTEN SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT
preaches
LOVE AND TOLERATION
of
ANTI-SOCIAL LOUTS
-he may sound enlightened in
CAMDEN
In
Newcastle
- he sounds
SMUG and NAIVE.
*
[This is one of the most enlightened
articles we have seen on the subject and Francis Maud
and his very -very nice leader should
spend a great deal of time together garnering some home truths which
they should never have forgotten in their chase to emulate the soon
departing destroyer who has made an ass of a party with a leader who has
no idea what is called for in being
HER MAJESTY'S OPPOSITION
Until the Conservatives can claim to be
an effective opposition it has no right to claim the right to represent
the people in THEIR
HOUSE of COMMONS.]
*
Out in the real world, they are
apoplectic about the state of the NHS and more ready than they have ever
been to contemplate radical reform of it. They do not want more promises
about higher health spending:
what this
Governments spending spree has meant is that they can't see their GPs at
the weekend (or at all unless you are prepared to hang on the phone
during one select half-hour of the day on which they want an
appointment), and that maternity wards eject women a few hours after
they have given birth.
These people - the great discontented
mass of ordinary people -have had big spending up to here.
NOW THEY WANT ANSWERS
-and a sense that there are some
politicians who are as impatient as they are
TO FIND SOLUTIONS.
The Conservative Party
was once seen as a great force for
self-improvement and
self-reliance.
The impulse that it harnessed in the
population - among sections of the country which it had been through to
be resigned to
PASSIVITY and POWERLESSNESS
-has not died. It simply takes
different forms.
The people whom Mr Cameron with his
team of jolly public school boys, needs to attract are not impressed by
the wind turbine he plans for the roof of his fabulously expensive house
in West London.
They want to know whether he really
understands how
DANGEROUS THEIR STREETS ARE
-or how much they resent the benefit
layabouts who cover their estate with graffiti, or how little hope there
is for their children now that state schooling offers no escape from the
local environment.
The Tories, I gather, are being advised
not to be
ABRASIVE
-soft words, gently does it.
Well. in the badlands of the Northern
cities, they are not feeling very
GENTLE
It is not abrasiveness that puts them
off politicians
IT IS USELESSNESS
They have given up hope of any party
actually dealing with the
PROBLEMS
-that are ruining their lives.
There is only one way for an
OPPOSITION
-to persuade voters that it will really
bring change:
it has to sound as if it is as angry as
THEY ARE
-and as if it has a
PASSIONATE COMMITMENT
to
DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
*
[Now do you believe us Mr Nice Guy and
your outdated chairman. You have both made a fine mess of a once great
party. You have got away with your drastic mistakes because the smaller
parties and organisations will not heed our call to fight as
ONE to obtain
PR-Pro-Portional
Representation
which will give each voter an
opportunity to vote for a party of their choice and know that their vote
WILL COUNT
with
PR-Pro Portional Representation
The Liberal party had fought for over a
hundred years for PR and when they could have used their influence they
decided not to do so. And the losers are the millions of people who
neither wish to vote for ANY of the cloned parties in your
HOUSE of COMMONS
