Multiculturalism is no longer right for Britain-says CRE Head Trevor Phillips
Part II

Identity

That means, at an absolute minimum, teaching English as the first language, so that immigrants, and the children of immigrants, and the children of segregated ethnic ghettos which disgrace so many of our inner cities can earn a living and participate properly in the society of which they are a part.

It also means teaching the history, culture and customs of this country to all British children, black brown or white, so that they can identify with this country and with each other.

My ‘crime’ in the 1980’s was to insist, as far as I was able, that English should be used as the first language in school.

That was deemed to be racial prejudice on my part. Yet, as the witch-hunt developed, I discovered I had the broad support of most of the parents, governors and teachers.

If I had to express my philosophy at the time, it was, I suppose, a belief in integration, and a rejection of both racial prejudice and multiculturalism, which \I felt from experience was dangerously divisive and contained the seeds of future conflict.

I suspect most decent people felt pretty much as I did – but not the organised mobs of ‘multiculturalisms’ in the street outside my school demanding the sacking.

Extreme Left-wing political groups locally orchestrated these demonstrations, and the frightening verbal attacks by letter and phone, and an unrepresentative handful of Asian extremists- today, I suppose they would be Islamic fundamentalists.

Their demands, though not perhaps their methods, were endorsed by the race relations industry, led by the CRE, which was as determined as the most extreme of them to drive me out.

That is why I am suspicious of Mr Phillip’s sincerity. Rarely since Saint Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus has a sudden and complete volte-face taken place?

And that is why, if the CRE is to prove my suspicions ill-founded, it has a lot of hard work to do repairing the ravages of its politically-correct obsession with multiculturalism has done to the education of a generation of a children both white and non-white.

Riots

In particular, the CRE must ensure that families from ethnic minorities, and their parents are not treated with a leniency, which is denied to families from the host country.

Mr Phillips may care to consider the following: on Saturday, the Daily Mail reported that the Manchester city council has reported plans to open a primary school in Sylhet, Bangladesh, so that British children of Bangladeshi origin who are systematically taken out of school in order to go on prolonged trips back to their ancestral homeland can be given some sort of education while they are away.

The cost of this fatuous exercise, undertaken, no doubt in the name of multiculturalism, would be £100,000 a year.

To be fair, the Government has now moved to block the scheme. But what a waste of public money it would have involved.

Contrast this with what happens to the white parents who keep their children out of school for some cultural reason, however compelling. They are, rightly followed up by the authorities and could eventually find themselves in prison.

Three years ago, Lord Ouseley, a former head of the CRE, issued an official report on the 1999 race riots in Bradford. He concluded that many local people did not dare challenge wrongdoing because they feared being labelled ‘racist’.

And he stressed his belief that schools would be crucial in any attempt to close the great racial divide which has opened up in Bradford down the decade.

In short, he wants Bradford’s schools to assert a core of ‘Britishness.’

That Lord Ouseley was asking exactly what I was calling for 20 years ago. It cost me my job. Are you surprised that I am a little cynical now?

The introduction of the Commission for Racial Equality those many years ago has done a great disservice to the majority of the people of these Islands who have always had a great tolerance for people from what ever the part of the world they came from.

The CRE have admitted themselves that over the years they had very few reasons to complain and that it is more than possible that the name itself has brought more antagonism which could have been avoided by ignoring the liberal attempt to blacken the name of the population. What was need ed was not a new name which could tare the whole population with the same brush, but the strong implementation of the Rule of Law to protect all citizens of our country of whatever origin.

Over the past 50 years tens of millions of peoples from the Indian and African Continent and the Balkans have been slaughtered in vast numbers.

In Africa alone there has been well over a hundred tribal wars over the last four decades. If there was need of a CRE? If there was another location where their influence might have secured success? It most certainly would have been abroad.

But it was easier and safer ground in those early days for the CRE to take root in one of the most tolerant places in the world than endeavour to take root in other lands and to save those countless millions who would have very much appreciated their help and advice.

Instead, here, the natural trend of the CRE over the years has been to explore everywhere in society for any remote example of complaint to justify their agenda and in so doing they were carried along to justify their existence.

The recent comment by Mr Phillips the head of the CRE about the way away from multiculturalism to awareness in ‘Britishness’ is at least a step in the right direction to restoring some sense for once after these many years. We hope this will be followed by the eventual demise of the CRE- at least in this country.

They have many opportunities overseas available to them to help those many millions who have suffered and still suffer from racist attacks in so many other parts of the world.

We wish them every success.
