SPECIAL forces arrested as they target Iraqi insurgents…troops have their armoured vehicles torched beneath them…British tanks stage a daring rescue operation.

 

Welcome to the almost surreal world of a ‘liberated’ Iraq where brave British soldiers are daily putting their lives on the line - and are cast as the villains of the piece for their pains.

With a civilian death toll now exceeding 28,000-coalition forces suffering 2,092 dead (including 95 UK troops -now 98 killed as at 1.12.2005), and last week’s Al Qaeda-inspired suicide bombings taking the carnage to a new level - the Government’s response? SEND IN MORE TROOPS.

 

The Mail was sceptical about this ill-gotten invasion from the very start - though when our troops went in we backed them to the hilt and argued that having got into this terrible mess it would be utterly immoral to cut and run.

 

However, on these pages Max Hastings one of the premier military historians of our age brilliantly argues the case for a deadline for withdrawal.

 

This paper does not agree with all he says. However we do know one thing - this debacle cannot be allowed to continue.

We now learn on December 1 -2005 that the investigations will be carried out by Military Police and not by the commanding officer who would be more knowledgeable of the man and incident concerned at the time of the matter in question.

 

The Government as usual created the problems with their illegal invasion, which has resulted with it being in the spotlight around the world as to the conduct of our brave troops. And their reaction is typical of New Labour to put the focus elsewhere in order to take the heat off themselves and if that means on the conduct of our troops who are risking life and limb then so be it.

 

It is typical of New Labour’s spin machine to release the news of the changes while the spotlight is on the possibility -which is very strong of Tony Blair giving away part or ALL of OUR EU Rebate and of course we are in the run-up to

EVEN BY the standards of Iraq, it was a ghastly day, and especially for the British people. Car bombs exploded in Mahmoudiya and Latifya, two cities few of us have heard of, killing one civilian and seven policemen.

 

U.S. forces engaged in firefights in the west of the country. Tony Blair’s Government announced its intention to send more troops.

 

It was reported that a billion dollars has been stolen from Iraq’s defence budget presumably by some of those responsible for spending it.

 

Yet the most bitter and painful pill for us, here in Britain, was the screening of extraordinary television footage showing our own soldiers apparently engaged in a firefight with IRAQI security forces (trained by British troops) and mobs firebombing two of our warriors.

 

[This footage should be weekly viewing by ALL at the Ministry of Defence in order to eradicate their impulse to find wrong in our troops actions in Iraq and punish them in the glare of the world’s Press rather than quietly cooperating with our forces on the ground. Any member of the Armed Forces is aware that those who are on the field of battle will judge his actions and gross conduct will be punished.]

Two British soldiers were detained but later released.

 

All those who saw the news film are left reeling in shock and humiliation. A devastating new blow has been struck at the image and reputation of the British Army, already battered by events during the occupation.

 

The Iraq mess, military and political, is becoming uglier by the week.

 

Sir Menzies Campbell yesterday told the Liberal Democratic party conference that it is time to bring the boys home. One of the nation’s favourite ex-soldiers, Colonel Tim Collins, seconded his demand in a newspaper article.

 

Some 95 [now 98 as at Dec 1-2005] British servicemen have been killed in Iraq.

 

Last month was the third worst for U.S. casualties since the invasion two and a half years ago.

 

The wretched Iraqi people, of whom 20 die for every allied soldier, have lost 346 civilians and 116 of their armed forces in 17 days this month [September 20-2005]

 

Almost 190 people were killed by bombing and shooting in just two days. In some western cities Al Qaeda is in open control and stages public executions of alleged collaborators.

 

American spokesmen claim to be killing insurgents faster than they can be recruited. The evidence belies this. Some 25 suicide bombers immolated themselves last month, [August 2005] yet there seems an almost unlimited supply of eager recruits to follow then to Paradise.

 

Western policy in Iraq is getting nowhere. Violence is mounting rather than diminishing. Washington’s objective, to create a democratic society in which Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites live together, seems more remote than it did a year ago, despite the elections and the creation of a constitution in defiance of Sunni rejection.

 

It is hard to see any logical reason why the Sunni minority, who held sway for so long under Saddam Hussein, should ever bow to rule by the Shiites and Kurds, who control all the vital oil, and have for decades of persecution to avenge.

 

By far the most likely future for Iraq, whether this comes soon or late, is that the country will fragment. It is hard to see any military or political options open to the U.S. and Britain that will prevent this outcome, even if our soldiers remain on the battlefield for a decade.

Many of the shrewdest and able defence gurus in America are able today fiercely critical of every aspect of President Bush’s handling of the war.

 

Ever since the 2003 invasion, it has been plain that the Coalition does not have enough soldiers to occupy the country and to provide security for its citizens.

[Tony Blair is helping his buddy George by sending 5000 of our brave soldiers to Afghanistan no doubt to take the pressure of American forces sending their troops and therefore diluting their numbers further of troops badly needed in Iraq.

 

In British history we have had a great deal of experience of soldiering in Afghanistan which is a soul-destroying exercise with it’s present population living by the sale of drugs - and where apart from Kabul is an open country of banditry - it is no place for our soldiers.

 

Though we wish our troops out of Iraq we would rather that the 5000 troops were protecting their comrades who are hard pressed in that country.]

The US army’s tactics are to strike out from secure bases, to conduct ‘search and destroy’ operations against insurgents, on exactly the same principles they adopted in Vietnam.

 

The consequences are that whole towns are devastated, scores of innocent citizens killed, whole populations alienated and a few insurgents accounted for.

 

Then, when the Americans retire to their fortified camps the enemy returns, exacting terrible retribution on anyone thought to have assisted the occupiers.

 

Some American counter-insurgency experts have suggested replacing this approach with a so-called ‘oil spot’ strategy. This would involve using U.S. troops to secure given areas, providing havens for their inhabitants where a political process could advance.

The trouble is that even America’s 140,000 soldiers in the country [IRAQ] are nowhere near enough convincingly to create many ‘oil spots’ and hold them. In recent weeks, mortar rounds have been falling even in the Green Zone, the heart of American-defended Baghdad.

 

For more than two years American and British teams have been striving to recruit and train Iraqi security forces to take over from Coalition troops [Some of these same troops have later attacked the Coalition forces]. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have taken the work, because they need the money. But there is not the smallest prospect they will be capable of protecting the people of their country for years to come.

How could it be otherwise?

 

In a society where loyalties are first the family, then the tribe and religious group, why should these wretched men feel committed to risk their lives for the sake of occupiers who they know will leave, or a government that is only the puppet of Bush and Blair?

 

Many Iraqis are believed to have joined the security services merely to gain arms; equipment and training that will be of service when their own people need them in the forthcoming civil war.

[There is also the possibility that an Iraqi/Iranian Force in the future may also have a use for the present training and equipment should such an opportunity avail itself in the not so distant future. It has been said that the defenders of a territory are not slow to learn from the tactics of their oppressors.]

When this comes, [civil war] they will seize and hold territory for their chosen warlords by the methods that have prevailed in Iraq for generations:

When the real struggle for Iraq begins, there will be no place for today’s egregious foreign human rights lawyers, today hastening ‘guilty men’ in British uniforms towards court martial or the Old Bailey.

[On this front the recent release of soldiers on trial as innocent of the charges against the vindicates the on-going campaign against soldiers facing civilian courts.]

 

The ruthless pursuit of power by the sword, rather than the wooing of voters, is the only due process the people of this tragic country understand. They have known nothing else.

 

John Reid, the Defence Secretary, declared staunchly at the weekend [September-2005] that there would be no recourse to ‘cut and run’ by the British Government.

 

Such firmness of purpose is often admirable. BUT to justify this in Iraq, it is necessary to believe that current policy is going somewhere, that at the end of the long, painful process of military occupation, a happy outcome might be obtained.

 

We should always be wary of comparing one predicament with another in history, because nothing is ever quite the same. BUT TODAY the parallels between the Vietnam ‘quagmire’ and that which is evolving in Iraq are deeply disturbing.

 

True allied casualties are much lower than they were in Indochina during the late 1960’s. The insurgents cannot call upon support of backing as powerful as Russia and China gave the Vietnamese.

 

YET in Iraq as in Vietnam, we see the U.S. struggling against a fanatical committed enemy who it does NOT understand.

 

Every American general concedes that the poor intelligence is a crippling weakness in the campaign. ‘U.S. soldiers simply do not know who they are fighting,’ as a serving officer put it to me recently.

The U.S. army, with its profound doctrinal commitment to war fighting, to the violent destruction of an enemy, cannot come to terms with the vital issue of ‘hearts and minds’

 

Millions of Iraqis who were at worst indifferent to the allied invaders back in the summer of 2003 are today its sworn enemies. They have seen houses razed, relatives killed and a complete vacuum of law and order in their country.

 

George Bush would say that all this must be blamed upon Sunni insurgents and the foreign fighters who swarm into the country to join them.

 

Iraqis do not see things that way. They simply perceive the US, British and the Coalition’s subordinate allies accepted responsibility for the governance of their country, and are miserably failing to exercise it.

 

There is no logical reason why in the absence of a radical change of policy in Washington, the present cycle of violence and anarchy should not continue indefinitely.

 

LAST MONTH, THE SENIOR American spokesman in Iraq, Major-General Richard Lynch, declared optimistically that allied forces are achieving ‘great successes’.

 

Pathetically few people believe him, however, even within the U.S.army. One Washington analyst, Anthony Cordesman, says:

 

‘The problem I have is that I can see no meaningful goalposts’.

 

What is the point of trumpeting a body count of insurgents killed - another sorry echo of Vietnam - when the supply of recruits seems unlimited?

 

How can real political progress seem plausible, when Iraqis watching satellite television during the few hours a day they enjoy an electricity supply can see the political mood in America turning relentless against the U.S. commitment.

 

The name of the game, for any thoughtful Iraqi who cares for his survival and his family is to side with those who will rule his country in the future, not the birds of passage currently cruising his streets in armoured convoys.

 

I HAVE CHANGED MY MIND ABOUT IRAQ. THE AMERICAN AND BRITISH INVASTION SEEMED DISASTROUSLY MISCONCEIVED.

 

 

However once we were committed, it seemed essential to stay the course, to create a viable government before we quit. TODAY, however, it seems almost impossible to believe that our open-ended presence is achieving ANYTHING.

 

As Sir Menzies Campbell and Tim Collins urged yesterday [Monday, September 20, 2005] it is time to start talking about when and how we go. Events in Iran should concentrate our minds.

 

Many of us predicted before 2003 that invading Iraq would make it much, much more difficult to deal with the real danger of Iran.

[The Coalition war in Iraq has alerted Iran of what to expect should they be on put on top of the hit list and know doubt they have contingency plans in hand possibly including a nuclear or chemical solution if not from their own growing technology then from others.]

So it has proved. There is today so much international hostility to the Bush administration and its appalling bungling in Iraq that it is very hard to muster a quorum to frustrate the nuclear ambitions of Tehran.

 

Indeed, the chief reason we can be sure the Iranians will proceed with developing nuclear weapons is that they believe only by doing so can they protect themselves from the US.

 

Iran is led by violent and dangerous people who pose a real threat to the West. Yet thanks to Bush and Blair’s fatal blunders in Iraq, it has become all but impossible to act effectively against Iran’s mullahs.

[The Coalition forces have themselves now made it almost inevitable that Israel in her defence will have to strike Iran when she is at the threshold of their final achievement as a nuclear power, which will have world-wide repercussions.]

The next milestone for Iraq comes on October 15-2005, when the country’s draft constitution will be put in a referendum. It is likely to be overwhelming accepted by the Kurds and the Shiites, and decisively rejected by such Sunnis as trouble to vote.

[This is the general picture as at 1^st December 2005]

 

Then presumably, whatever the Sunnis say or do, a new government will be elected-dominated by Shiites.

 

It is impossible to suggest that the British and Americans should simply pack their bags and go immediately. It seems not only rational, but also essential to announce that we will leave by, let us say, the end of 2006.

[This is too long in the future -would it not be better to withdraw as a controlled reduction of the collapsing perimeter ‘(collapsing balloon’) behind which as the territory in occupation is reduced this will strengthen the perimeter line to avoid a last minute bloodbath when the insurgents know the deadline details.

 

In the battle for Arnham in the Second World War the 1 Parachute regiment and other support units trapped on the other side of the Rhine with the brave Polish paratroopers on the other bank under constant bombardment endeavouring to reach the beleaguered garrison in flimsy plastic river craft to reinforce the reduced stoic defenders assault but they were unable to do so being under heavy devastating fire claiming many casualties from across the river.

 

It was finally decided to withdraw the almost trapped British soldiers back across the Rhine at night in extreme weather conditions with great caution with approximately 2000 of the original force of 8000 escaping to safety leaving many injured to be cared for by the Germans.

 

IT must be said the Dutch people gave their properties to destruction and many their lives heroically to assist the Allied troops in their country. Arnham paid a particularly heavy price because the Germans used their panzer tanks to try and dislodge the British forces that were determined to do their utmost to hold their position for the arrival of 40 Corps.

 

There is no doubt they did their job with great courage and it must be tragic that the relieving force were unable to break through immediately after the bridge at Nijmegan had been secured by the brave American forces - with Arnham only 9 miles away.

 

General Urquhart

who commanded the Arnham brigade  and reaching General Browning’s headquarters in Holland still dressed in the battle scarred clothes was asked by an orderly whether he would like to change his clothes -he said no.

There was no doubt a great deal more on the General’s mind of greater concern.

 

When he saw Browning he commented that he went into the battle with 8000 men and came out with 2000.

 

It was a bold plan with great risk but it should have worked.

 

It is ironic to recall that it was a lack of communication, which sealed the fate of the brave venture, which would have shortened the war with the consequent reduction in lives lost.

 

It was the failure of the wireless set used in the particular terrain to function except on the rare occasion. In the UK prior to the final departure of the great air flotilla the individuals responsible for checking the wireless sets had expressed their doubts about the reliability of the equipment in Holland.

 

Browning ignored the information from the Dutch underground and by their own reconnaissance aircraft that there were panzer troops at Arnham.

 

The whole success of Market Garden depended on rapid movement but they were held up some say unnecessarily by our tanks (Coldstream Guards -Lord Carrington?) not proceeding on time having their cup of tea because they had their troops fighting in Nijmegan (only 9 miles from Arnham) after American troops with great loss crossed a swift flowing river in daylight in fragile boats and captured the vital bridge to enable 40 Corps to pass over in order to reach the besieged British garrison hanging on by its finger tops - fighting courageously without heavy armour against German panzer units.

 

Their vital equipment of ammunition ,medical supplies and much else was being dropped over enemy controlled drop zones, which our aircraft were unaware of because of the faulty radios of the troops on the ground. And the locations of the drops zones were in German hands because secret plans, which should never have left England, were found among the bodies in a downed glider.

 

Many say such an important strategic plan to shorten the war needed the command of 40 Corps to be placed in ‘Blood and Guts’ General Patton’s hands to ensure its success -many would not disagree with this - though such a decision would no doubt have been vetoed by Montgomery.

After that [the announcement of date for leaving Iraq] there will probably be a civil war but that is brewing anyway. The blow to the West’s prestige and credibility, but so, too is the current shambles.

‘We’re waist-deep in the Big Muddy,’ it ran. ‘but the big fool says push on.’

 

Today, George Bush and his grotesque gang of neo-cons are still pretending that everything is hunky-dory in Saigon - sorry, Baghdad.

 

Tony Blair persuades himself that the strong, honourable, courageous, virtuous policy to continue providing the backing section for his friend in the White House.

 

The British people should NOT be fooled. The West’s efforts to bring democracy to Iraq, to which 9,000 of our soldiers are committed, have failed. The most substantial uncertainty about that hapless country’s future concerns which new brutal warlords will take over.

 

Whatever the Americans decide to do in Iraq, the British SHOULD start planning their withdrawal.

 

Yesterday’s [September 19-2005] deeply disturbing TV film of British soldiers apparently shaming their own uniforms should help to concentrate minds. For Ministers now to talk of ‘sticking it out’ represents not courage, but merely a continuation of folly.

 

We are ‘waist-deep in the Big Muddy’ and the ONLY sensible course is to strike out for the shore.

General faces Met inquiry into Sergeant’s death in Iraq

ONE OF THE ARMY’S MOST SENIOR COMMANDERS is facing an investigation over the controversial death of a British soldier in Iraq.

 

Major General Peter Wall may face criminal charges as a result of a metropolitan inquiry into the killings of Sergeant Steven Roberts and an Iraqi citizen.

 

The investigation, ordered by Attorney General Lord Goldsmith, is likely to fuel concern over the intervention of civil authorities into matters of discipline that would once have been handled by the military.

 

Some officers fear politically-inspired investigations are leading towards persecution and show trials, while rules set by civilian lawyers hamstring the ability of forces to operate in war zones.

 

Sergeant Roberts was shot dead in Al Zubayr, near Basra, in March 2003, hours after recording a message to his wife Samantha complaining that the forces’ lack of equipment was ‘a joke’

 

He had no body armour at the time - he had given it to another soldier who had none.

 

An Army ‘whistleblower’ was reported in the Sunday Times yesterday as saying that investigators believe Sergeant Roberts was shot by one of his men.

 

The Iraqi, who died, Zahir Zabti Zaher, was said by the paper to have been shot after throwing a stone at a British tank after taking part in a protest against a patrol.

 

Sergeant Roberts was said to have given the order to shoot, only to be hit by fire from his own side.

 

Lord Goldsmith ordered an investigation after telling Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon there was evidence that a senior British officer made a ‘concerted attempt’ to block an investigation of the deaths by the Army’s Special Investigations Branch.

 

General Wall, currently deputy chief of joint operations at the Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood, West London, is said to have refused SIB requests for a full investigation and to have written to superiors questioning the need for one.

 

In a statement released through the Ministry of Defence, General Wall believed he had acted properly.

 

He said:

‘It is inappropriate for me to comment on this case, as it is still under investigation, but I am confident I acted in accordance with the interests of justice and appropriate care of the soldiers under my command’

 

A spokesman for the Attorney General said:

 

‘The case is with the Crown prosecution Service and no decision has yet been taken on whether charges will or will not be brought.’

 

The Ministry of Defence refused to comment on the details of the case.

 

Sergeant Roberts’s widow called last month for the establishment of a new organisation to investigate Army incidents.

 

Concern over a ‘witch hunt’ against the military, led by civilian Human Rights lawyers, has followed a string of investigations and trials over events in Iraq, which many officers have seen as persecution. Worries that officers are being singled out for attention were deepened by the decision to bring charges against

Colonel Jorge Mendonca.

 

He is due to stand trial for failing to stop his soldiers allegedly beating an Iraqi detainee to death.

 

Colonel Mendonca’s wife Louise said earlier this month that

 

‘a tense political climate has resulted in a real or perceived pressure prompting the authorities to venture down a path never trodden before.’

 

Last week it was announced that commanding officers are to be stripped of their historic powers to decide whether serious charges against soldiers under their command should either lead to a court martial or be dropped.

 

There have also been charges and trials that have ended in legal fiasco but caused great unease in the Army.

 

Last month seven Parachute Regiment soldiers were cleared of murdering a civilian after a judge ruled the Iraqi witnesses- brought to Britain on £60-a-day expenses from the Government had lied.

 

In April prosecutors dropped a charge of murder against Trooper Kevin, a 22-year-old accused of shooting dead an Iraqi civilian.

 

The Director of Public prosecutions, Kenneth MacDonald, QC, ruled shortly before Williams was due to appear at the Old Bailey

 

That he had no case to answer.

[The Army should control its own discipline procedures regarding the investigations of its soldiers and must be protected at all costs as to allow no political interference, which would be un-British and would suit Tony Blair and his pro-European chums, as it would allow greater EU political control over our Armed Forces.

 

There is a need however in special cases in which the Army itself commits an injustice whether politically inspired or not which though not put before the Director of Prosecutions should be dealt with by a

 

House of Commons

All-Party Committee of Inquiry

 

composed of members of Parliament known for their Service record Integrity and Independence.

 

In the event of further investigation the matter should go to a similar INDEPENDENT Committee in the House of Lords

 

The purpose of the Independent Committee is to decide whether the matter under consideration should be either returned to the Chiefs of Staff with the recommendation as to the course to be taken or acceptance of the decision already taken by the Service under Investigation.

 

The above procedure will obviate the necessity of a civilian trial at the

 

Old Bailey

 

of members of

 

Her Majesty’s

Armed Forces.

Only those who are on the battlefield at the moment of the incident can possibly arrive at the correct judgement.

 

Company commanders in the field will know they will have the backing of the Parliament Committee should there be ANY attempt of political interference on their decisions and they have the knowledge that should any others in the chain of command seek to change the course of events the soldier of whatever rank will have a means to have the matter investigated in the manner we have outlined.]

The morale particularly in the Army is at almost rock bottom and many soldiers are leaving the Armed Forces who are desperately needed because of the growing role of the British Army in the world at large.

 

In some units of the Army there are up to 20% Commonwealth citizens filling the gaps now appearing because of the adverse publicity of Civilian Trials and the lack of support from the Ministry of Defence in the supply of vital lifesaving equipment which their Ally in Iraq has in abundance.

 

If there is an Investigation needed it is in the handling of the illegal war which the Attorney General could have prevented and of course Geoff Hoon at the MoD who managed they say to lose 200,000 Flak Jackets and quantities of Boots, Filters etc, etc, etc, etc,

She has also committed treason, together with co-signatories Ted Heath, Margaret Thatcher, John Major, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.   Realising that under the five Treason Acts they should already be hanging by the neck until dead, Tony Blair and the Queen signed the Crime and Disorder Act, 1998, which secretly abolished much of the crime of treason (s36.3) and reduced the penalty to life imprisonment - they didn't tell the MP's what they had just voted for.   1.4 million British Servicemen gave their lives for our independence. The Queen has thrown their sacrifices away and made them worthless. At no physical risk to herself, she could have fulfilled her oath and duty as a constitutional check and balance, by refusing to sign the six treaties until an in/out referendum had been held. In the unlikely event the vote went against her, she was even more unlikely to lose her crown (not her life or a limb), and would keep her £9 billion plus palaces either way. Those servicemen's lives would still have meant something.   But she was always keen to sign; and said in advance she would sign the last treaty. Princes Charles, William or Harry can now never be King. You can't have a King without a Kingdom: they can only be princes of a region (principality) within Europe. King Edward 8th was forced to abdicate because he was too overt as a German Nazi supporter. Mrs Simpson's divorce was merely the excuse. The Royal Family is a German Family - real surname Saxe-Coburg Gotha. Windsor is an adopted surname. All four of Prince Phillip's sisters married high ranking German Nazis. After they lost the war the EU was switched from a Nazi basis to a communist basis. It is so obvious she cares nothing for Britain or the British. The Queen's aspirations are not ours; she clearly serves a much darker master; the faith she defends cannot be the one we think it is. King George VI, the one recent monarch not indoctrinated with Nazi or Communist philosophy, must be turning over in his grave.   I ask that the law be enforced, and the Queen be tried for treason before 12 honest people, and not by our corrupt judges. And that the illegal section 36.3 Crime and Disorder Act be declared null and void, so that she can hang by the neck till dead. The new EU Hitler doesn't have to get elected   Its worth noting that Adolf Hitler first had to get elected, if on a 35% minority vote, and then get his Enabling Act passed. An EU dictator has no such problems. Our EU rulers do not submit themselves for election now. And the Queen has already signed the Enabling Act (Civil Contingencies Act 2004).   The EU's Hitler will have a much easier rise to power, and will have the formerly British and French nuclear weapons from day one.
