Prospective Tory candidate  asks for ‘deal’ with the UKIP.

It was to be expected that prospective Tory candidates would endeavour to do deals with the local UKIP Constituency Chairman and the following article in the Daily Telegraph on the 12th December by Brendon Carlin - Political Correspondent has outlined a typical case.

A Tory candidate in a key election target is facing disciplinary action after claims that he tried to do a deal with the UKIP.

David Chambers’s prospective candidate in the Labour-held Stafford wrote to the local UKIP activist in September saying he was ready, if necessary to back complete withdrawal from the EU.

Tory Whips in the Commons are now poised to discipline Mr Chambers even though he denies he has done a deal with the anti-EU Party.

The row will review the disarray during the 1997 election when the same Tory MP’s backed a referendum on the EU membership to avoid a challenge from Sir James Goldsmith’s Referendum Party.

It also comes ahead of the launch later this week of a new Campaign designed to get prospective MP’s to favour pulling out of the EU.

The ‘330 Campaign’ takes its name from the aim of achieving a new Commons in which more than half the MP’s would prefer a purely trading arrangements with Brussels.

Mr Chambers, 55, is battling to overturn the 5,032 majority of David F Kidney Stafford’s Labour MP.

In a letter dated September 14th to Paul Gilbert, the UKIP’s Constituency Chairman in Stafford, Mr Chambers made clear his own Eurosceptic credentials.

Current Tory policy [as usual] under Michael Howard is to redefine Britain’s relationship with the EU [after 33 years]

by renegotiating key treaties and bringing powers from Brussels to Britain [When the UK share of the vote will make this impossible in Brussels]

But after the UKIP break-through in last summer’s European Elections [We were confident of the likely result] many Tory candidates and even some Labour ones will be wary of losing votes to the anti-EU Party.

In his letter Mr Chambers explicitly raised the prospect of full withdrawal if Mr Howard’s approach [Doomed to failure] failed to work [This is a matter for the Trades Description Act to offer a obvious false hope under these circumstances].

It may be that Mr Howard could achieve his pledge to bring back powers from Brussel’s to Britain [NO Chance!] but, if he cannot then he would call for a referendum to be held

The Referendum question would be simply

“ Do the British People wish to remain in the EU”-Yes or No

In plain English:

[Do you wish to be a Slave or Free]?

[This at least we can agree is the correct message]

He says I would vote No and I would campaign to that effect. Wrote the Tory candidate Mr Gilbert.   Last night the local UKIP association later agreed on the basis of the letter, not to field a candidate against the Tory.  [Well this was a betrayal of trust because there is no doubt that the promises made by Mr Chambers could not have been achieved in our lifetime- if ever]

The announcement was highlighted in the November 2004 issue of the local Constituency newsletter, featuring Mr Gilbert and Mr Chambers shaking hands under the headline:

 “Local UKIP Chairman backs Chambers”

Last night Mr Gilbert said he was sure the Tory candidate had been seeking an agreement with the UKIP locally.

However, Mr Chambers yesterday denied that he had tried to do a deal with a rival party.

Mr Chamber’s letter was not acceptable although he would not face deselection a Tory spokesperson said.

[Well as we have previously said the Tory Party are doing their utmost to limit the damage the General Election in 2005 will do to them-they deserve their punishment because they will not cross the Rubicon and save their reputation.]
