BUSH USED IT-BLAIR NEEDS IT

The Comment Column of the Daily Mail on Monday, November 15, 2004 has warned us all of what to expect from Tony Blair in its article:

Scare stories and electioneering.

Tony Blair’s strategy for winning a third term is becoming clear. He will present himself as the only leader able to protect this country at a time of ‘great national danger’

With the election expected in May [2005], Labour’s leaders are already starting to create a climate of fear, which they can cynically exploit for party advantage- a tactic George Bush used so effectively to win a second term in the White House.

This weekend, the Prime Minister said the British terrorist suspects released after being detained by the Americans in Guantanano Bay were ‘causing difficulties again’-though he offered no evidence to back his claim.

David Blunkett warned yesterday that Al Qaeda ‘is on our door-step and threatening our lives.’

And we can expect more of the same not least from President Bush, who can be relied on to give apocalyptic warnings about terrorism when he visits Britain next year.

Of course all governments today must be particularly vigilant-after 9/11 and the bombings from Bali to Istanbul, no one should be in no doubt that we are in real danger.

But the truth is that the main reason we face such a threat is the foreign policy adopted by Mr Blair and Mr Bush.

Yes, they were correct to invade Afghanistan, a country which was home to Osama Bin Laden and a vast military training camp for fundamentalists.

But, rather than wait for that war to be one and Bin Laden captured, Britain and America justified an invasion of Iraq by saying it was essential if global terror was to be defeated-even though Saddam Hussein was one of the few Arab leaders implacably opposed to Al Qaeda.

And to compound this fundamental error of judgment, the heavy-handed tactics used by the occupying US forces have made a difficult situation immeasurable worse.

More than 18 months after the invasion, the country is all but ungovernable and has become a magnet for terrorists including many from the West.

In Fallujah sheer force is enabling the Americans to bomb their way to ‘victory’. But this will not end the insurgency-many of its leaders in that city moved out days ago.

And, as the scale of the devastation and number of non-combatants killed in Fallujah becomes more clear, the queues to join the suicide bombers will become longer.

Surely not even New Labour can twist and distort such a catastrophic policy into an election winner?
