UK voting system' ignores will of millions'

BRITAIN'S voting system is 'archaic' and divisive' and does not represent the will of millions, a pressure group has argued. The Electoral Reform Society, which has campaigned for proportional representation for 130 years, claimed last month's General Election was the most disproportionate ever. It said UKIP would have WON up to 80 seats using the type of PR used in many European nations, while the GREENS would have got 20. UKIP and the GREENS received 5MILLION VOTES, but under the FIRST-PAST-THE-POST system ended up with ONE MP each. An E R S-commissioned survey said under PR the TORIES would have seen their tally of MPs fall by almost 100 while LABOUR would have gone down 24...

THE WIDOW of a British soldier killed by ‘friendly-fire’ in Iraq voiced her anger yesterday as the Attorney General said no charges would be brought.

[Well! Only Geoff Hoon must have taken some comfort from that decision as he alone was responsible in his previous position as Defence Minister to ensure that our troops were properly equipped BEFORE they reached the war -zone and the fact that Sergeant Steve Roberts was ordered to give up his flax jacket to an infantryman confirms the shortage of equipment at the time. It was later said that over 200,000 flax-jackets went missing.

As we all know the illegal invasion Iraq was the Government’s decision, which included Geoff Hoon at the time and a compliant House of Commons, which will take many years if not decades to blur the dishonourable conduct of the majority of the Mother of Parliaments].

Sergeant Steve Roberts was caught in the cross-fire as his comrades tried to quell a riot during the invasion of southern Iraq in March 2003.

Yesterday Lord Goldsmith [the same Lord Goldsmith who changed his mind about the legality of the war on Iraq at the time] announced there was ‘no realistic prospect of conviction’ [of these guilty of allowing an illegal war to take place] against British soldiers at the scene, where an Iraqi civilian [for all intents and purposes he was a soldier attempting to stop the illegal invasion of his country.

Under such circumstances his understandable behaviour was distracting the British soldiers, which resulted in the events which followed –but it could also have resulted in an ambush which was in progress] was also shot dead.

The case became a political bombshell after it emerged that Sergeant Roberts was forced to hand in his body armour days before his death because of critical shortages –making a nonsense of former Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon’s claims that soldiers had all the equipment they needed.

Yesterday, his 34-year-old widow Samantha –who has campaigned to uncover the truth about his death – said she accepted the decision not to prosecute his comrades. But she felt she was no closer to learning what really happened.

‘The fact remains that three years after my husband’s death I know little about how he came to die than I did when I was first told that he had been killed,’ said Mrs Roberts, from Shipley, West Yorkshire –who has accused Mr Hoon of having ‘blood on his hands’

She added:

‘I can only hope that the coroner will now conduct an Inquest with full access to evidence.’

The dropping of the case brings to an end three years of anguish for the soldiers under suspicion and will spare the Armed Forces another damaging high- profile trial.

Ministers will also avoid further furore over what critics see as an eagerness to bring politically motivated charges against British troops in Iraq – seriously undermining the morale and confidence of UK forces.

Lord Goldsmith told the House of Lords there was ‘insufficient evidence’ to bring criminal proceedings in the case – which also led to the death of civilian Zaher Zaher.

The tragedy triggered two separate investigations. After an initial probe by Royal Military Police – who were unable to visit the scene –the Commanding Officer of the troops involved decided there was no case to answer.

But in August 2004, amid complaints that Commanders had ‘resisted’ attempts to properly investigate, Lord Goldsmith gave the case to Scotland Yard detectives, who completed their investigation in February 2006.

Sergeant Roberts was commanding one of three tanks from the 2rd Royal Tank regiment operating a roadblock near Az-Zubayr on March 24, 2003.

Zaher approached and started throwing rocks. Sergeant Roberts, who was standing up by his tank, tried unsuccessfully to calm him. Eventually his comrades opened fire from the other tanks with machine guns. [Not the most accurate weapons to use at close quarters].

Two bullets hit Sergeant Roberts, who died at the scene. Zaher was hit and his arm almost ripped off. The soldiers claimed he still got up and tried to throw more rocks, and was shot dead.

It is understood an Iraqi witness said the troops ‘finished off’ Zaher as he lay wounded.

Eleven UK soldiers were interviewed and up to six faced possible charges, including one officer.

But Lord Goldsmith said yesterday that all their statements, as well as those from US. Witnesses supported the same version of events – that they acted to defend Sergeant Roberts.

After her husband’s death, Mrs Roberts published his audio diary coving his final days, in which he lamented ‘disgraceful’ shortages of kit for British troops, which left him and his men facing combat with

‘Absolutely nothing’.
