Europhiles say the Single Market’s not working – and the
current economic outlook for the EU is bleak.
In
the Eurofacts journal of 22nd of October , 2004 an article
by two bodies institutionalised disposed towards the EU confirm that its
economic prospects are grim.

The Single market has failed, survey shows.
The Single Market is
sometimes depicted as the one great achievement of the EU. But a recent survey* of business opinion on
the Single Market , by Chatham House and Accenture, is unremittingly
pessimistic. It concludes that:
The current economic outlook
for the EU is bleak.
Only 40 per cent of all
those surveyed thought that a single market existed to a great extent: that
percentage was smallest in financial services.
Twenty per cent thought that there’s little or no single market in their
sector.
Nearly half of those
surveyed thought the USA more business-friendly than Europe. One business
leader said that it took twelve times longer and cost four times as much to set
up a business in Europe compared to the US.
As to progress achieving the
‘Lisbon target’, of the EU becoming the most productive and technologically-advanced region of the
world by 2010, another respondent said “The Lisbon target’s a typing
error-it should be 2100”.

leaders responded to specific statements:
“North America is more
business-like than Europe”.

Agree: 58 per cent
“The EU is helping European
business to complete global”
Disagree: 54 per cent
Agree: 16 percent
“There should be more EU
common standards”
Disagree: 52 per cent
Agree: 32 per cent
“ The Single Market should
not mean a uniform market”
Disagree : 16 per cent
Agree : 68 per cent
“ My company will make
significant investment in the Single Market”
Disagree : 44 per cent
Agree : 26 per cent
The 451 business leaders
interviewed 9341 from EU member states, 60 from the US, 50 from Japan) all came
from biggish companies with sales of 50 million dollars or more ( 25 per cent from companies with sales
above 1-billion dollars). This is a
category which is typically more international and europhile than small
businesses.
As to the bodies carrying
out the survey, Chatham House ( the
Royal Institute of International Affairs) has been cheering “Europe”
on-since before the Second World War.
Accenture (the former consulting
arm of Arthur Anderson), with its huge public-sector client base, is
unlikely to say anything which might go against British government policy ( a former employee is the
fervently europhile Patricia Hewitt, the current head of the Department of
Trade, Industry and Parents Rights.)
When even
the europhiles say the Single Market’s not working you know the game is
up. It’s no surprise that Chatham House
and Accenture, in what no doubt is a survey conscientiously carried out, should
come to this conclusion. The European
Commission itself has been saying the same thing for years.
