E U Withdrawal:
UKIP’s ‘one simple attainable target’
One Target
We
in the UK Independence Party are fortunate we have one simple attainable
target-the restoration of self-governance and self-determination to the British
people-and at present the UKIP arrow is speeding towards the goal.
After
years of being regarded as a marginal pressure group, meeting in village- halls
or the back rooms of rural pubs, we are now the fourth largest political party
in the United Kingdom.
We
have 11 members of the European Parliament who use their positions exclusively
to expose the true nature of the EU and to campaign for British withdrawal.
The temptation to celebrate is considerable. Not only, however, has the arrow a long way
to go towards its immediate target, but we must recognise that, although our
current 12 per cent of the British electorate is a significant share of the
vote, 54 per cent of the British people actually desire Britain’s withdrawal
from the European Union.
The
startling anomaly, therefore, that none of the principal parties reflects the
will of the majority of the electorate, is not yet reflected in the election
results.
Some
voters, of course, still believe the specious, vaguely Eurosceptic half-truths
spoken by the other parties as they [continue] surrender further
sovereignty. Only time and further,
bitter experience will demonstrate
How cruelly they have been
deceived.
I have no desire to join the
ranks of those who claim seriousness by adopting names indicative of vague,
well meaning aspirations, but it is perhaps overdue that I offer a sketch of the factors which
unite UKIP, a party of otherwise
extraordinary disparate people of every social and political background.
Many
assume UKIP to be nationalist or ‘anti-Europe’. This is facile rubbish.
Are we ‘anti-American’ because we do not want George Bush as President
of our Country? We believe, however, in
common with anthropologists and ecologists alike, that a people can only be
identified and defined by itself, not by an outside agency; that
self-determination, by means of language, culture, custom and law, is, in Brussels’
terminology, ‘a
fundamental human right’of every social and political background.
Freedom not
Rights
We believe in ‘bio-diversity’ in ideas and cultures. In common with ecologists, we recognise that
long- term strength springs only from a multiplicity of divergent and often
conflicting influences, not from standardisation. We believe that rivers should meander, not be straightened by
statute. In that sense, we are truly
conservative.
We
believe in freedoms, not rights. ‘Rights’ are afforded by a ruling class,
which, by presuming to grant them, presumes also to withdraw them. We spurn them, and maintain that freedom to
do what we will, provided that we do no harm to others, is ours by right of
birth alone. In that sense, we are
truly liberal.
It
follows, then, that we have many policies, which, whilst they motivate our
desire for Independence, are not directly related to the struggle. It follows that, as soon as we are free to
do so, we will rescind those bans imposed upon us from without in recent years,
trusting instead to the courtesy and responsibility of the British people. It follows that we will deregulate business,
cease to interfere in family life and restore to the people the freedom to
divert themselves as they will, subject only to the provisions of Common Law.
Dramatically Different
It follows too that our policies for schools and
hospitals, for example, will be dramatically different from those of our
rivals. Our policies, broadly, are that
schools and hospitals should be what parents and patients, teachers, doctors
and nurses believe that they should be, and that a Government should merely
assist them to attain their ends, region by region, according to their needs.
For decades now, Government policies-which is to say EU
policies-have been dictated by the spurious concept of equity. With a rapid communications and transport,
this is no longer necessary.
Government
should be responsive to specific requirements, and, rather than imposing
ignorant principles upon disparate communities, should allow communities, and
individuals within them, guided by their own experts, to make their own choices
within a law which protects and enables.
We believe that Government
should be small and truly representative.
That is why we want a free Britain, but Britain is not only a
nation. It is a people, made up in turn of many
communities and many individuals.
Our task now must be to show not only that we are ready
to govern the people and to lead them to FREEDOM, but also that they are ready
and able to take that FREEDOM, and to govern themselves.
That is the ultimate target
and the arrow is now on its way.
