A BISHOP has added his voice to the chorus of complaints that

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

is destroying the meaning of

CHRISTMAS.

The Rt Rev Carl Cooper used his

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

 to ask if there was any point of commemorating this time of the year if the

BIRTH OF CHRIST WAS OVERLOOKED.

He said businesses were stopping staff decorating offices while councils were running

WINTER FESTIVALS

instead of celebrating

CHRISTMAS.

He attacked the idea that such trends were meant to avoid offending other faiths, which made up only a small minority of the population and were mostly horrified by the idea of a

SECULAR CHRISTMAS.

'imagine going to live in a Muslim country and protesting because it celebrated the end of Ramadan. This excuse is clearly groundless and misguided.

'The Truth is that teachers and other public servants have become paralysed with

FEAR and POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

They need to regain confidence in our

CULTURE and TRADITIONS

CHRISTMAS survives as a huge NATIONAL CELEBRATION

But if it doesn't commemorate the

BIRTH of CHRIST

one begins to wonder

WHAT THE POINT OF IT IS.'

The Bishop of St David's in Pembrokeshire said that although only a small number of Britons were regular churchgoers, more than 70 per cent of adults though of themselves as

CHRISTIANS.

Congregations for Christmas and carol concerts were growing, particularly in his diocese.

'Despite the fact that recent surveys have shown that an overwhelming majority of British families would like schools to put on a traditional nativity play at Christmas,

ONLY ONE IN FIVE SCHOOLS ARE DOING IT THIS YEAR.

'One can see why Gordon Brown is trying so hard to revive the idea of Britishness when even

CHRISTMAS is becoming ALIEN.'

To those who accused him of mixing

the Bishop said:

'There is no aspect of life in which God has no interest. I urge schools, local authorities and other public bodies to bring

JESUS back into CHRISTMAS.
