The intrusive habit of adding fluoride to water supplies began in America in 1945 and is now common throughout the so-called developed world.

When politicians were told that tooth decay was more prevalent in areas where fluoride was not a natural constituent of local water supplies they decided to reduce health costs by artificially adding [the poison] fluoride to water supplies.

There were several reasons why you should dissapprove of adding fluoride to drinking water.

FIRST, putting fluoride into drinking water is a dangerous business. the amount of fluoride that can safely be added to drinking water has to be judged very carefully.  Too much fluoride can cause bone disorders and cancer.  Way back in 1986 the World Health Organisation  published a report expressing concern about the incidence of problems caused by excessive fluoride in drinking water supplies.  Even if you feel that you can trust the scientists to get their sums right when calculating how much fluoride should be added ( and don't forget that no one at the water company has the faintest idea how much water you are going to drink) there is a real danger that a water company employee may add the wrong amount of fluoride to your drinking water.  Do not accept the bland reassurances from your water company.  They will undoubtedly assure you that they have checking systems which would make such a mishap quite impossible.  Ignore these reassurances.  If your water company is adding chemicals such as fluoride to your drinking water there is a not insignificant chance that one day an employee will make a mistake and poison you.  And unless the error is so terrible that it immediately causes obvious ill health there is a very good chance that you will never even know THAT A MISTAKE HAS BEEN MADE.

SECOND, many people are allergic to chemicals such as fluoride and may be made ill by drinking water that has had fluoride added to it.

THIRD, tthere has to be a real risk that the fluoride which is added to drinking water may interact in some unpredictable way with any one of the many other chemicals which these days occur naturally in many drinking water supplies.  The water which comes out of your tap is already likely to contain nitrates (which will have accumulated because of the widespread use of fertilizers in the countryside), Chlorine and aluminium sulphate (often added deliberately by water companies) and lead and copper from the pipes which are used to bring water into your home.   Whenever chemicals exist in solution together there are chemical reactions.  I don't know what all these chemicals will do when they meet one another.  And I don't think anyone else really knows either.

Adding chemicals to drinking water is a gross intrusion.  Fluoride is merely the beginning and if we allow the scientists, politicians and water companies to get away with this there is no knowledge where where it will all end. One scientist has already suggested that drinking water should have antibiotics added to it (arguing that this would reduce the risk of infection and so reduce health costs).  A second  serious suggestion has been that contraceptives be added to drinking in order to reduce the birth rate.  And another suggestion has been that tranquillisers be added to drinking water in order to reduce anxiety levels ( and , presumably, keep the voters quit).   It is of course, already commonplace for farmers to add
