is at the root of our concerns about
A NATIONAL DATABASE.
If we trusted our leaders without reservation, we would
have far fewer concerns about allowing them to store our DNA details.
But neither the population as a whole nor the eminent
Nuffield Council on Bioethics, which this week attacked the
placed much trust in our elected representatives.
We fear that they will allow hackers to penetrate the
system and grab our genetic details, that future governments may use the
information it contains about our
HEALTH and FAMILIES
to bully and bribe us, that cash-strapped ministers may
sell our details to commercial organisations.
Most Britons, according to a recent poll, now believe
that we live in a surveillance society, in which the
GOVERNMENT has COMPROMISED our PRIVACY
AND WE DON'T LIKE IT!
ONLY ONE IN FIVE TRUSTS THE GOVERNMENT.

The national DNA

autocracy combine to
LIMIT OUR FREEDOMS.
It was as

Parliament's INFORMATION COMMISSIONER Richard Thomas

In fact, the
GOVERNMENT wants to collect many more samples. It is consulting on
planes to expand the number of offences for which DNA samples are
routinely collected by the police, to include littering, shoplifting and
But in the
longer term, there is an even more sinister development. Last month,
Stephen Sedley, a former COMMUNIST who is now a SENIOR JUDGE, suggested

Tony McNulty, the Home Office minister responsible, said
he was 'broadly sympathetic' to the suggestion. he didn't mention that

WHOSE DATA WOULD HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE ANYHOW.
Of course , we all want to catch criminals, but how much

The DNA database, if it included every person in Britain,

A WICKED GOVERNMENT
An incompetent one, which allowed internet hackers access
to information, would be just as damaging.
THE GOVERNMENT, for example, recently PUBLISHED the

And given that the Chinese recently managed to hack into

it can surely be only a matter of time before our DNA

Alternatively, imagine that your name was was attached to

OUR PRIVACY IS UNDER THREAT
-not just from this database, but from a host of others.
The Government wants to issue us all with

Then it wants to set up a children's database,
containing information on every child in Britain who the social services
believe is a risk.
And there is the biggest of them all, the £12
NHS database, which if it ever works properly will put the confidential
medical records of every person in Britain on the internet, behind the
kind of firewall that is broken every day by computer geeks
[As we in the EDP can confirm]
And 6.5 million of us are already on the police
Nor should we stop with the databases held by the
Government. Everything we do on the internet is recorded by our

The car insurance companies are experimenting with
putting satellite-tracking systems into cars as a condition of

Meanwhile, the Government constantly takes new powers to
invade our privacy in other ways. The innocuous sounding regulation of
Investigatory Powers Act permits numerous government agencies -
including trading standards, environmental health officers and councils
- to engage in electronic surveillance.
Elsewhere, the poking and prodding around in our lives is
even more obvious; council tax inspectors have the right to descend on
our homes with digital cameras to take pictures of our bathrooms and
Ironically, at a time when the rich are increasingly
using European-inspired privacy laws to conceal their doings from the
rest of us, the average Briton
HAS VIRTUALLY NO PRIVACY LEFT.
It's time to wake up to just how much information we have
