The Curse of Society's enforced
Equality -Takes its Toll.
It's Faye's little girl we should be
[Daily Mail-March 31-2007]
SOME images of battle are so horrific
that they are etched into our national psyche. And now we have a new
one, the image of Leading Seaman Faye Turney paraded like a trophy by
her gloating Iranian captors.
Looking at those pictures, we don't see
the face of a brave sailor. All we see is a terrified young mother, her
blonde hair covered with a Muslim scarf, dragging heavily on a cigarette
, hands shaking with fear. It is a profoundly unsettling image
And why? Principally, because she is a
women. beneath our veneer of political correctness and our pride that
nearly one in ten in our Forces personnel are female, we still feel
deeply uneasy about women in battle.
The Iranians perfectly understand our
queasiness and that's why they paraded Faye, bent to their will, forced
her to write groveling letters of apology, and used her ruthlessly
against the West as the splendid propaganda weapon she is.
Watching Faye effectively pleading for
mercy, we inwardly ask ourselves how the hell we ever let her get there
in the first place. We feel a kind of collective guilt at her fate, a
knowledge we were all complicit in her capture. And we are
As a nation we see our nearly 18,000
servicewomen, many reaching the highest ranks of the forces, as a
triumph for equality, a mark of a modern, liberal, decent society. But
Faye shows us the reality of a women at war - a 25-year-old married
mother leaving her three -year -old daughter behind for up to three
months at a time, and possibly longer.
Leaving aside questions as to how any
women could voluntarily leave her young child for such tours of duty,
Faye's capture highlights the real risk of women in the front line, not
just to themselves but to their comrades in arms.
They put their male combatants at
greater risk of harm, not because they are weaker than them, but because
they are far more valuable trophy of war, a prize to be used as
blackmail against her comrades and her country.
I have no doubt that Faye Turney is a
brave young women devoted to her job. For that, we owe her gratitude.
when the shrill Hazel Blears defended Faye's 'right', to pursue the
career she loves, was I the only one who wondered about her little
daughter's right to have a mum she loves at home, watching her grow up?
