WHY NEW LABOUR MUST HAVE THEIR
ORWELLIAN THOUGHT POLICE
GOVERNMENT PUBLISHES 'UNPRECEDENTED'
On March 7-2007 the Government
published proposed legislation overturning years of religious freedom.
Known as the 'Sexual Orientation
Regulations', these landmark laws would make it a civil offence for
Christians to discriminate against homosexual activity when providing
goods, facilities and services.
After spending nine months drafting the
Regulations the Government has now given the public a chance to read the
final version. As was feared, the laws do not include significant
exemptions to protect
Thomas Cordrey, barrister and Public
policy Analyst at the Lawyers' Christian Fellowship commented:
'this legislation is unprecedented in
its complete intolerance of those who have religious beliefs... the
Government is prepared to take the landmark step of making it illegal
for Christians to hold to the Bible's clear teaching that God loves
everyone and wants all people to know him, but also, that extra-marital
sexual conduct (whether homosexual or heterosexual ) is wrong.
Although the Government has published
the Regulations, it remains to be seen whether they will pass
Parliament. If they do then many voluntary services and private business
run by Christians will have to close rather than promote homosexual
Referring to the effect these
Regulations will have on voluntary organisations run by the CATHOLIC
CHURCH, Tom Wright, Bishop of Durham, said:
'This completely fails to take into
account the views and beliefs of all those involved...the idea that New
Labour can come up with a new Morality which forces on the Catholic
Church after 2000 years; I am sorry, this is amazing arrogance on the
part of the GOVERNMENT.'

You're abusing Parliament over gay
vote, Catholic leader tells Blair.
Simon Caldwell and Jane Merrick
[Daily Mail-March 20-2007]
BRITAIN's most senior Roman Catholic
accused Tony Blair of an 'Abuse of Parliamentary democracy' last night
by refusing MPs a debate on controversial gay rights laws.
Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Conner
criticised the Prime Minister for forcing through regulations making it
illegal for adoption agencies to reject gay couples.
Instead , MPs were allowed a
single vote on the Sexual Orientation regulations which the Government
won last night by 210, despite 100 Tories voting against.
Peers will try and block the
regulations in the Lords tomorrow.
But the Cardinal said: 'it is, surely,
an abuse of Parliamentary democracy that these regulations are
being considered only through a hurriedly arranged and very brief
meeting of 16 appointed MPs and a short debate in the House of Lords.
'During the House of Commons
committee meeting, opportunity for serious debate was denied. Profound
public concern about aspects of these regulations has not been heard.'
The Catholic Church has threatened to
close 13 adoption agencies because it cannot accept a law which
contradicts its teachings on the central role of the
Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders
have also said they will 'discriminate heavily' against anyone who
expresses the view that gay sexual acts are not equal to the conjugal
love of heterosexual married couples.
More than 20 Tory MPs, including former
leader Iain Duncan Smith and Shadow Attorney General Dominic Grieve,
turned up at a committee which rubber-stamped the rules last week to try
and DEBATE the ISSUE but were repeatedly blocked by Meg Munn, the
Minister responsible for the Regulations. It is normal practice to give
MPs a week's notice even for minor legislation and it is likely that
committee members would not have had time to read the REGULATIONS.
The 90 minutes allocated for debate
last night involved one MP other than three front-bench spokesmen as
Miss Munn gave no opportunity to discuss them.
Former Home Office minister Ann
Widdecombe said last night there had been an 'almost unprecedented
shortness of time from the Act being introduced and moved into the
Commons. They were being moved with 'extreme and unseemly haste,' she
Tory MP William Cash said:
'I am absolutely appalled by this
whole thing. These REGULATIONS
-are being railroaded through like
they didn't matter. We know that the Prime Minister didn't want the
regulations to go this way. We know Ruth Kelly didn't want it.'
[We are astonished that members of the
House of Commons were so surprised that the GOVERNMENT would DO
WHAT EVER WAS NECESSARY
-in order to get the legislation
They only have to look at their own
dismal performance in protecting the Rights and Liberties of the People
which includes their Christian beliefs and freedom of expression and
duty to one's FAITH.
Over the past two millennium many men of
the church -literature-soldiers and statesmen and others have proclaimed
We have our own Samuel Johnson -the
great author- lexicographer and conversationalist (1709-84)
The Christian religion is the only
one that puts morality on its proper. and right basis, vis: the fear and
love of God.
A English clergyman James Martineau
'The health of a community, is an
almost unfailing index of its morals.'
The First President of the United
States of America -George Washington(1732-99)
' Let us with caution indulge the
supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Reason and
experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail
in exclusion of religious principle.
A great liberal Prime Minister
William E .Gladstone (1809-98)
The free expression of opinion,
as experience has taught us, is the safety-valve of passion. The noise
of rushing steam, when it escapes, alarms the timid; but it is the sign
that we are safe. The concession of reasonable privilege
anticipates the growth of furious appetite.
'By telling us that there is only
one way to think on moral issues the Government is dangerously near to
becoming the Orwellian thought police.'
The Rev. Dr. Nigel Scotland.
