WEAPONS INSPECTOR David Kelly did
not commit suicide, he was murdered, a campaigning MP claimed yesterday.
An Inquiry by Lord Hutton concluded
that Dr Kelly bled to death after cutting his wrist in remote woodland.
But Norman Baker, a senior Liberal
Democrat, said yesterday this theory 'does not hold water'.
Mr Baker, MP for Lewes in East Sussex
said: I've concluded in my mind, beyond reasonable doubt as it were,
that it's impossible for the suicide explanation to hold water.
'The medical evidence doesn't support
it in any way, the psychological evidence barely supports it either and
, as it wasn't obviously natural causes or an accident, then you're
driven to the conclusion that it must have been some sort of murder.'
The weapons inspector had been named as
a source of a report by the then BBC journalist Andrew Gilligan, who
said the Government had 'sexed up' its dossier setting out the reasons
for going to war with Iraq.
His body was found in a wood near his
Oxfordshire home in July 2003 shortly after he was identified as the
informer.
The Inquiry by Lord Hutton in January
2004 concluded that he took his own life but it failed to halt
widespread speculation.
Some medical experts argued that the
wounds recorded in Dr Kelly's post mortem examination would not cause
loss sufficient to kill him.
Acquaintances said he did not seem
suicidal in the days before his death.
Mr Baker said that the Hutton Inquiry
was 'less rigorous 'than a ordinary inquest because the Law Lord could
not force witnesses to attend or require evidence to be given under
oath.
NO INQUEST WAS EVER HELD
Mr Baker, who had been examining the
case claimed he had been supplied with an explanation of what happened
by an anonymous individual.
'What I would say is that I have been
furnished with an explanation by someone who says they know.' he said.
'I've gone into that in some detail.
I've met that person on a number of occasions and the information which
he's given does correspond with the facts.
'I haven't managed to disprove it
yet...and indeed the evidence I've managed to accumulate has provided
circumstantial support for that explanation.
He added: I don't believe that the
Prime Minister and the politicians were responsible.
'I believe they treated him shamefully
and callously in that they deliberately leaked his name to the press.
'But I don't believe they were actually
responsible for his death.' Mr Baker's comments came as the BBC2's
